HOW TO LAND A PERMANENT JOB
AUTHOR: SHARON LIU, CREATED: 21/07/2016.
SUMMARY OF PROCESS
Do well in every subject at school. Learn social skills.
Sell yourself at the job
interview.
Sell yourself every day in your
job.
Learn every day in your job, even if you have been there for years.
Try to stay in your job.
I’VE FOUND A JOB, BUT SOME OTHER JOBS LOOK BETTER! WHAT DO I DO?
• It is necessary to adjust to the harsh realities of the job marketplace. Knowledge of the job takes years to accumulate. If you start afresh, you will be very behind other people.
• You can start your own projects in your spare time.
• You can get promoted in your existing job.
• You can learn about other aspects of the business you are contributing to.
• The general rule is, if you have found somewhere you can get money from, by all means stay there.
HOW DO YOU STAY IN A JOB?
Look after other people at the
company.
Spend your money wisely.
Improve processes you have control
over.
Develop your personality.
Develop new skills.
Accumulate new knowledge.
Think about what would
persuade your boss to keep
you.
WHAT DO I STUDY AT UNIVERSITY? IS IT NECESSARY TO GO THERE?
• Study the best subject at University that your grades can get you into.
• Prefer the sciences over the arts, as they tend to be the richer disciplines.
• University buys you more time for you to develop. However, this development you should expect to do yourself and not from merely listening to your teachers.
• Even if you have not been to University, you should expect to be able to follow what goes on in there. Try looking at a few OpenCourseWare websites to see whether it fazes you or not.
USING INTUITION TO GUIDE YOU IN A JOB
• It is more likely that you will succeed in staying in your job if you get a good feeling from it.
• Notice when you get a good feeling from your job, when you get excited about your job, and aim to feel like this every day.
• If inside you feel like you are not up to scratch, this may lead to burn-out.
• It is not necessary to work around the clock, even if you feel certain this will help. Leave some time to naturally self-reflect, as this may be more productive.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I LOSE MY JOB?
Staying in your fieldPrepare for loss of reputation and look for ways you can counter this.
Read around your field.
Self-reflect on how you can improve on your past performance.
Moving out of your field
Prepare for a salary decrease.
Gather resources necessary for you to succeed.
Estimate how much it would cost to learn a new job.
