HOW TO KNOW HOW MUCH RAM YOU HAVE

Page 2: How to know how much ram you have

Knowing how much RAM you have left is of the utmost importance because it helps to moderate your usage of network resources accordingly. There are programs like DriverAssist which will provide you with a general overview of how the various drivers are operating on your system.

However, RAM is a much more specific concept that requires specific measurements at given times. A RAM check is a sign of diligent computer usage rather than starting an activity and then realizing later that you have run out of memory to work with. The computer may or may not warn you with the effect that you could end up with an unscheduled shutdown which is hard to explain.

You also need to distinguish hard disk space from RAM. The latter is the accessible and fluid part of memory that is used on a transactional basis. It is what you need to open, read and change files.

General disk space is more about storage capacity by contrast. In order to do the check manually you should first go to the start screen. In some operating systems this is known as the start menu. Type in the string “ram” and press enter to begin the search. You will get an option to view RAM. Point your arrow and review the information that is relayed.

The details of the RAM that is available will be given in a format that is very easy to understand. Sometimes, you could have installed a memory chip that is not currently recognized by the computer.

In this case, it will not be listed under the installed memory or RAM. The systems properties window will wait for the chip to be recognized before incorporating that new RAM into the overall reading.

It is better to err on the side of caution and intervene as soon as you perceive a potential shortage of RAM.

Keeping a careful watch over the computer system

Some operating systems such as Windows 8 will provide you with a full listing of the available system resources. You will then have to review them in order to find out where the RAM stands.

The Task Manager can tell you what is being used at the moment and that is where you may make a decision to terminate some of the programs that you are not actively using yet they are eating up elements of RAM.

Remember that DriverAssist works on functionality, presence and upgrades or drives. It is not really an effective gateway to fully assessing how much RAM is on the system. Establishing the factual information is just the beginning of the story because you may have to do something about it.

Some computers come with restrictions on how much RAM they can take. Others, can be upgraded to the extent that you can add on significant amounts of RAM. Those that have the technical skills are able to completely transform the processing power of a computer in this way after reviewing what is available. You can always do a scan of this type from time to time.
