THE PRESSUREIn this session we learn how to apply pressure for Shiatsu.

The pressure needs to have three important characteristics. It needs to be:

The PressureCONNECTED AT TWO POINTS : We always need to have two points of contact on the body to allow the brain of the receiver to fully relax. EQUAL: The two hands need to give the same amount of pressure.

PERPENDICULAR: The two hands need to be on top of the point of pressure at 90 to enable a penetrating, perpendicular pressure.

THE PRESSUREWe need to have a steady pace, to allow the pressure to go in depth and allow the receiver to go into a deep state of relaxation.

Always remember that our abdomen "Hara" (Sea of Energy) needs to always face the part of the body we are working on.

THE ROOM These are general indications regarding the room in which we are giving shiatsu. Of course, you are not professional and your receiver doesn't expect anything in particular from you. In any case, to get the best out of our time with our partner, it would be nice to have a room with certain pre-requisites. The closer we are to this standard, the better.

The room needs to be: CLEAN: We will need to have a place clean enough to lay down our futon/mattress.

SILENT: Shiatsu is a very relaxing experience so we will need to work in an environment that will allow this. So No TV. 2) No people around if possible. 3) No open windows to avoid external noises and wind coming in. We also want to avoid too much sun through the window.

SPACIOUS: We need to have enough space to move around our receiver ideally 50-60cm in each side.

THE SHAPE OF OUR BODY To give a proper pressure we need to be perpendicular to the body of our receiver. We do this by being on our knees and by putting our hands on the floor, like we were 1 year old, easy We saw that if we need to give less pressure we can move back with my knees (less angle) and deliver a lesser pressure.

BACK IN PRONE POSITION We start our Shiatsu on the back by applying the first pressure on the two extremes of the back. We place our mother hand on the sacrum and the other on the last thoracic vertebrae (the prominent bone below the neck). We will stay there for few seconds to set the tone of our treatment. Remember, both bones need to be exactly under our wrists.

BACK IN PRONE POSITION Then we will start palming down the back and we will work on both sides of the spinal chord. First the part farther from us and later the one on our side. It is now time to do the same with our elbows. This can be more relaxing than using the palms (for both of you).

PERPENDICULAR: The two hands need to be on top of the point of pressure at 90 to enable a penetrating, perpendicular pressure.

The Fingers on the backNow we change our position in order to be over the body and work on it with our fingers. Same place where we worked before but this time, on both sides of the spine simultaneously. Remember the fingers always need to be like this

The Fingers on the backWe start from the top of the spinal chord and we will work with the two thumbs together. Always remember to lean on the body with the rest of your fingers to avoid a poking sensation for the receiver. We will arrive until the sacrum and we will probably have to change our (leg) position to go into the lower part of the back.

.

Final positions on the backWe now apply some pressure with two hands together on the spine. I call this position, the iron :). We go only until the end of the rib cage. Once we have delivered our pressure, we lift the hand to change position. We now apply some pressure with two hands together on the spine. I call this position, the iron :). .

The SacrumFirst of all, we apply the pressure to the buttocks with our elbows. We will do it in two points on one side before working on the other. We work now on the sacrum (the triangular bone on top of the buttocks). Work first on three points in the centre. Then we leave the thumb of one hand on the upper side of the sacrum and we work on the perimeter of it with the other thumb. Always work on a couple of pressure on the buttocks, you will see... they'll love it.
