Sometimes it’s nice if you have nothing to do. You can just sit or lie down somewhere without the pressure of
having to accomplish something. But being idle for quite some time is not going to be fun anymore especially
when boredom begins to strike. It’s like feeling some itch but not knowing where to scratch. Boredom starts to
become an annoyance then a frustration then will eventually become a problem that will take a toll on your
health. So if you don’t want to become a victim of boredom, here are some tips on how to get rid of it.
Meet people. When was the last time you’ve made a new friend or had a chat with a random stranger?
Boredom can also give you a good reason to socialize with other people. Start with a small chat. Talk
about hobbies, interests, the weather and what’s on TV nowadays. If you’re with old company then try
to do some activity that will provide a good bonding experience.
Plan ahead. Boredom usually strikes during your free time. If you don’t want to get bored during
those times then try to plan some activities ahead on your schedule. If you’re at work, you can start
working on tasks that are scheduled a few days ahead to give you a head start. You can also help
another colleague finish his/her work. You’ll be surely appreciated for your gestures. If you’re at
home, you can work on household chores or do some quick exercises.
Educate yourself. Use boredom as a trigger to do something to improve yourself. Start reading books
about self-improvement or watch TV shows that teach skills such as cooking or home maintenance.
You can also surf the web which is a treasure trove of new ideas like Do-It-Yourself projects. You’ll
be surprised on how many things you can learn just because you got bored.
Break some sweat. I consider boredom as stored energy that needs to be used. That is why you feel
uneasy whenever you’re bored. You have this urge to do something but you just don’t know what. So
if boredom is actually energy that is waiting to be released then what could be more effective in using
that energy than exercise? Go ahead and get into your workout clothes and start breaking some sweat.
Not only will it cure your boredom, you’ll feel better as well.
Be artistic. When you are bored, that mind is actually more open because it is searching for
something to do. Your boring time can actually be the time when you’re most creative. Let out your
creative side during these times. Grab a brush and start painting or open your computer and start
writing. If you like ink on paper then that would be better since you can practice your calligraphy.
There are tons of artistic things that you can do and it doesn’t matter if you’re good at it or not, the
good part is you’re actually doing something productive instead of idling around.
We all hate to be bored. But if you look at boredom and deal with it in a different way, it can actually prove to
be beneficial. The goal is to turn yourself from a passive to an active individual or from idling around to
creating something worthwhile.
“He who seeks rest finds boredom. He who seeks work finds rest.”
~Dylan Thomas
