    Keepinmindthatthefollowingisn'tsuitableforeverydayusetrythatandyou'llsoonburnout.But,onceinawhile,it'stheperfectcureforthe"WillIevermanagetogetthatdone?"blues.

    Let'ssayyouhaveataskthatwilltakeyou10to12hourstocomplete.Here'showtodoitinjustoneday.

    1.Telleveryoneyouwon'tbeavailable.

    Interruptionsareproductivitykillers,solettingpeopleknowyou'redoingsomethingspecialandwillbeoutofreachforadayisanabsolutemust.

    Ataminimum,tellcoworkersandfamily,butdon'tforgetimportantclients.Sendaquickemailadayortwobeforeexplainingthatyouwillbetieduponacertaindayandwillrespondtocalls,emails,etc.firstthingthefollowingmorning.

    SomecustomerswillcontactyoubeforeThursdayotherswillmentallynotethatyoucan'tbereached.Eitherwayit'sallgood.

    Andyougetanadditionalbenefitfromtellingotherpeopleyourplan:Thoseimportanttoyouwillknowwhatyouintendtoaccomplish,andtheywillknowifyoudon'tsucceed.

    Peerpressurecanbeagreatmotivator.Useit.

    2.Decidehowlongyouwillwork...

    Don'tplanonthebasisof"I'llworkaslongasIcan,"or"I'llworkaslongasIfeelproductive."Setaconcretetarget.Committoworking12hoursorwhateverperiodoftimeyouchoose.

    Why?Thelongerthetimeframeyouset,thequickertheearlyhoursseemtogoby.

    WhenIworkedinafactorywetypicallyworkedeighthourshiftsthehoursbeforelunchdraggedandthelastcoupleofhourseachdayalwaysseemedlikedeath.Butwhenweworked12hourshifts,themorninghoursseemedtoflyby.Somethingaboutknowingyou'llbeworkingforalongtimeallowsyoutostopcheckingtheclockit'sasifyounaturallyfindyourZen(work)place.

    Whenyouknowyou'reinforalonghaul,yourmindautomaticallyadapts.Trustmeitworks.

    3....Andtotallycommittomeetingthatdeadline.

    Youknowwhathappens:Onceyoudecideataskshouldtakefourhoursitsomehowendsuptakingfourhours,evenwhenitshouldactuallytakeonlytwo.It'snaturaltofillextratimewith"stuff."

    Theoppositehappenswhenadeadlineisseeminglytooaggressive:Wefindwaystostripoutthenonessentialandgetthingsdonemuchquickerthanwecouldhaveimagined.

    Sodon'tjustsetadeadline.Totallycommittohittingthatdeadline.

    Andfeelfreetoplayanymentalgamesthathelp:Makeabetwithsomeoneelse,ormakeabetwithyourself(withlosingmeaningyouhavetodosomethingyoureallydon'twanttodo)inotherwords,makethestakespersonalsoyou'renotjustprofessionallybutalsopersonallyinvestedintheoutcome.

    4.Startatanunusualtime.

    Haveyouevertakenalongcartripandleftat3or4a.m.?Ibetthosefirstfewhoursflewby,becauseyousteppedoutsideyournorm.

    Thesametrickworksforanextremeproductivityday.Startat4a.m.Orindulgeyourinnernightowlandstartat6p.m.andworkthroughthenight.Thosefirstfewhourswillflyby.

    Anextremeproductivitydayisnotanormalday.Setthestagefortheunusualbybreakingfreeofyourusualroutine.

    5.Delayandthenspaceoutyourrewards.

    Sayyouliketolistentomusicwhenyouwork.Onanextremeproductivityday,keepthemusicoffforthefirstfewhours.Thatway,whenyourmotivationstartstoflag,alittlemusicwillprovideagreatboosttoyourmorale.

    Howeveryoutendtotreatyourself,thinkofthosetreatsaspersonalproductivitybulletsuseallyourammunitiontooearlyandyou'llhavenothingleftwhenyoureallyneedit.

    Whatevertypicallycarriesyouthroughyourworkday,holdoffonitforawhile.Delayedgratificationisalwaysbettergratification.

    6.Refuelwellbeforeyouthinkyouneedto.

    Waitinguntilyou'rethirstytodrinkwhenyou'reexercisingisalreadytoolate.

    Thesameistruewhenyouwork.Plantoeatorsnackalittleearlierthannormal.Ifyousitwhileyouwork,standuplongbeforeyourreargetsnumb.Ifyoustand,sitlongbeforeyourlegsstarttoache.Inshort,whenyouallowyourselftofeeldiscomfortyourmotivationandresolvewillweakensodoeverythingpossibletokeepthatfromhappening.

    Andspeakingoffood,planmealswisely.Don'ttakeanhourlunchbreak.Preparefoodyoucaneatquicklywithoutlotsoforganizationormess.Thekeyistorefuelandkeeprolling.

    RememberwhatIsaacNewtonsaid:Aproductivebodyinmotiontendstostayinproductivemotion.That'swhyyoushould...

    7.Takeproductivebreaks,notrelaxationbreaks.

    Momentumiseverything.Don'ttakeawalk,orwatchalittleTV,orgoofaroundontheinternet.Youwillneedbreaks,butthosebreaksshouldreinforceyoursenseofactivityandaccomplishment.

    Pickafewproductivetasksyouliketoperformandgainasenseofaccomplishmentfromandusethoseforyourbreaks.Spendingevenafewminutesinthelandofinactivityweakensyourresolve.

    8.Don'tquituntilyou'redoneeveniffinishingtakeslongerthanexpected.

    Stoppingshortishabitforming.Ifyouquitthistime,whatwillkeepyoufromquittingthenexttime?Answer:nothing.

    Quittingisahabit,butstayingthecourseisalsoahabit(muchthesamewayit'spossibletodevelopgreatermentaltoughness.)Somakeyourfirstextremeproductivitydaythestartofagreatnewhabit.

    Plusyoucangainagreatsidebenefitfromextremeproductivitydays:You'llunconsciouslyresetyourinternallimitonyouroutput.How?Weallhavethislittlevoiceinsideusthatsays,"I'vedoneenough,"or,"I'mexhaustedthere'snowayIcandoanymore,"whichmakesusstop.

    Butthatlittlevoiceliestous:withtherightmotivation,orundertherightcircumstances,wecanalwaysdomore.Stoppingisn'tinevitable.Stoppingisachoice.

    9.Andthenbaskintheglow.

    One,youdeserveit.

    Andtwo,anextremeproductivitydayautomaticallyratchetsyourinternallimitstoahigherlevel.Afterafew(maybeevenjustone)exceptionalproductivitydays,you'llstarttoperformbetterduringevery"normal"daytoo,simplybecauseyouwillhaveunconsciouslyquietedthatlittlevoiceandraisedyourownbarwhich,ofcourse,istheonlybarthattrulymatters.

    Sometimespeopleleaveforabetteropportunity.Sometimestheyleaveformoremoney.
