HOW TO ENTERT AINWIT H CARDS

There is no easier way to entertain and make certain that noguest is neglected, and that all have a good time, than by giving acard party. Cards may be played at any hour of the day. They, alone, may be the raison d'tre for the occasion, or they may precede orfollow a breakfast, or luncheon, or form the entertainment afterdinner. Afternoon card parties are particularly smart and easy toarrange for. They offer the hostess an opportunity to entertainformally or informally, and with as little or as much expense as shedesires, and still be correct socially.

Auction is the most popular card game today, but Five Hundred,Euchre, or any other game played by the friends of the hostess isequally correct.

In preparing for a card party, the wise hostess will look up thecorrect rules for playing, scoring and progressing, and read them toher guests before the game starts, or else have a copy of the rulestyped for each table. This will avoid all discussion andunpleasantness due to misunderstanding of the rules or variationsin customs. The latest correct rules for every card game may befound in "The Official Rules of Card Games", published by The U. S.Playing Card Company, Cincinnati, and sent on receipt of 20c.

Another necessary provision for all entertaining with cards is theselection of one or two new decks of cards for each table, as thegame requires, and an extra pack or two for emergencies. The cardsmay be the Bicycle brandinexpensive but well printed on goodstock, with a durable finishor the de luxe Congress cards, withgold edges and picture backs appropriate for every occasion. Theexperienced hostess knows that money spent for new cards that slipeasily gives her guests more pleasure than the most elaboratedecorations, accessories, or refreshments.

Never invite more guests for cards than can be seated com-fortably in your rooms, leaving free passage between the tables. It isbetter to give two successive parties at which the guests can betaken care of comfortably, than one large, crowded affair at which noone has enough elbow room.

    FORMAL ENTERTAINING

The invitations for a formal affair should he issued in thethird person, ten days before the designated date, and shouldbe engraved, if possible.

For an afternoon card party, the usual form is:

    Mrs. Harold Logan Grant

    requests the pleasure of

Mrs. Blank's (name of guest inserted in handwriting)

    company on Thursday, January tenth

    at two o'clock

    Auction Forty Madison Ave.

For a dinner to be followed by cards:

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Logan Grant

request the pleasure ofMr. and Mrs. Blank's (this line in handwriting)

    company at dinner

on Thursday, February ninth at seven o'clock

    Cards Forty Madison Ave.

The above form, using the name of the hostess only, is also

used for formal breakfasts and luncheons. It is proper, andsometimes more convenient, to have the second line of the in-

vitation read "request the pleasure of your company", whicheliminates writing in the name by hand. It also is convenient, when one entertains a great deal, to have engraved cards to befilled in, as occasion demands, with the name of the guest, entertainment, day, and hour, as follows:

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Logan Grantrequest the pleasure of ........................................

    company at .... on ...............................................

Should the affair be given in honor of a special guest, the hostessmay write at the bottom of each engraved invitation "To meet Mr.

    and Mrs. Clifford Ames"

, or she may have a small card engraved tobe enclosed with each invitation, after this form:To meet

    Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ames

    of New York.

When an affair of unusual formality and elegance is to be given,to introduce some one of distinguished position, the invitation maytake this form:

To meetMiss Harriet Holmes GaltMrs. John Howard Martinrequests the pleasure of

(name of guest to be filled in by hand)company at luncheon

    on Monday, October eighth

at two o'clockCards Nine East Gay Street

Dinner invitations should include both husband and wife, andbe addressed to both. Separate invitations should be sent for eachother member of the family or any guest staying in the house.

When a young woman and her house guests are to be asked toaformal luncheon or afternoon affair, each should receive a separateinvitation.

Replies to formal invitations should be addressed to the hostessonly, and always should be sent within twenty-four hours of theirreceipt, and in the formal third person:

their acceptance ofMr. and Mrs. Harold Logan Grant's

kind invitation to dinner onWednesday Evening, October ninthat eight o'clock.

Formal entertaining calls for quiet elegance in all appointments, with cut flowers or howls of flowering bulbs for decorations. Tallycards should be the plain engraved ones sold by stationers. It ispreferable to have the table for a breakfast or luncheon set withembroidered or lace runners or doilies, rather than a table cloth. Thecenter-piece may be a low bowl of cut flowers, perhaps with lacyferns trailing down over the bowl and across the cloth. Tiny bouquetsto match may be at each place, with a corsage bouquet for the guestof honor. Another pretty centerpiece is a flat table mirror on whichsmall bisque porcelain figures are grouped. Daylight. is preferable tocandlelight for. breakfast or luncheon, unless the day or room isdark. Candles should not be used for decorations unless they arelighted. Their place may be taken by the gay little china figures forsale in the shops. Silver dishes of bonbons or salted nutsare the onlyother table decorations, outside of the customary tableware andchina at each cover. The first course, of fruit cocktail, oysters on thehalf shell, or a similar dish, may be in place when the guests enter.

A formal breakfast usually takes place at high noon; never laterthan half-past twelve. The menu may follow that for a luncheon, or itmay be confined to breakfast dishes. A formal luncheon usually istimed for one, half-past one, or two o'clock. The trend today is awayfrom the heavy, many-course meals of a few years ago. Eitherbreakfast, or luncheon may be served at one large table or at smalltables holding four guests. The latter plan is convenient if cards areto follow the meal.

For a formal breakfast, luncheon, or afternoon card party, theguests wear formal afternoon gowns, and keep on their hats.

For a formal afternoon card party, or bridge tea, tea is served inone of two ways: either from a tea wagon, from table to table, theplate and teacup being placed out the card tables beside each guest;or in buffet fashion from a table set in another room from that in

which cards are played. The tea wagon should be arrangedattractively with the tea service on top, and the

cups, sandwiches, cakes, and bonbons below. Ifnecessary, the wagon may be supplemented by servingtrays or muffin stands. if the tea is served from a table, itshould be arranged with doilies or runners, with a silvertea service at one end. and a chocolate service or punchbowl at the other end. Flowers in a silver vase orbasketsilver candlesticks, silver bonbon dishes, andsilver plates for c a k e and sandwiches make the prettiesttable.

    INFORMAL ENTERTAINING

For informal affairs, it is permissible to telephone one 'sguests ifthey are intimate friends; to send one 's card withthe words

    Bridge at two o'clockSeptember tenth

written below the engraved name, and, if the affair is inhonor of a guest, "'To meet Mrs. Truesdale" above theengraved name; or, to write a cordial little note, on whitenote paper, something like this:

10 East Side AvenueMarch eleventh Dear Mrs.Atwood'

I shall have a dear friend, Mrs. HowardTruesdale, of Washington, staying with menext week, whom 1 should like to have youmeet. Can't you join us for bridge, next

    Tuesday, at two-thirty?

    Sincerely yours,Helen Gaines.

    or

Dear Mrs. Atwood:I am planning an informal little

luncheon, followed by three tables of FiveHundred, for next Wednesday, and shouldlike to have you come. Luncheon will be atone o'clock, toallow ample timefor the game.

    Hoping that you

will have no prior engage meritto prevent your accepting, I am,Cordially yours,

    Helen Gaines

Informal invitations should be sent five to seven days before thespecified date, and should be answered with a short informal note atonce. A decisive answer should always be given, so that thehostess may obtain substitutes if necessary. This is particularly

important when cards are to be played, or when the occasion is adinner or luncheon where one absent person may disarrange anentire table. In case it is necessary to break an engagement, afteran acceptance has been sent, one should write a note giving a veryexplicit and genuine reason for so doing.

An informal breakfast is timed for ten, ten-thirty, or eleveno'clock, and follows a simple breakfast or luncheon menu, omittingthe sweet course, if the latter plan is used. A final course of Frenchrolled pancakes, or cheese with conserve andcrisp, thin crackers, may be served.

    Decorations and Refreshments

An informal party allows more scope than a formal affair forcarrying out special or seasonable ideas in tallies, decorations, andrefreshments. As a rule, a few simply arranged cut flowersgreenery, or branches of autumn leaves form the prettiest. andmost suitable decorations. In planning decorations, particularly

when the affair is in honor of a birthday, one sometimes wishes touse the flower dedicated to a certain month. The floral calendar is:

January, snowdrop; February, primrose or pink; March, violet;April, daisy or Easter lily; May, hawthorn or lily of the valley; June, rose or honeysuckle; July, daisy or water lily August, poppy;September, morning glory; October, hop or cosmos; November, chrysanthemum; December, holly.

    The wedding anniversaries are: first, cotton; second, paper;third, leather; fifth, wooden; seventh, woolen; tenth, tin; twelfth,linen; fifteenth, crystal; twentieth, china; twenty-fifth, silver;

thirtieth, pearl; fortieth, ruby; fiftieth, golden; seventy-fifth,diamond. The names of these anniversaries suggest suitabledecorations. For instance, for a card party celebrating a wooden

wedding anniversary, the score cards could be cut from thin wooden plates; the refreshments could be served from woodenplates; the table centerpiece could be a flower- or fruit: filledchopping bowl. Prizes could be a steak plank, a pair of wood bookblocks, mahogany candlesticks, or similar articles.

The refreshments for an informal card party may be served from

a tea wagon, as described in the last paragraph under

    12/47

Formal Entertaining, or, if the size of the company permits, and it isdesirable in order to carry out a decorative scheme effectively, theguests may be seated at the dining table. Punch or iced drinks maybe served during the play, provided coasters are used so that theglasses will not injure the table tops or covers; but it is better not, toserve candies or nuts at the card tables, if one wants to keep the

cards in good condition.General menus for refreshments will be found on pages 16 to 22,

and for special occasions, on pages 23 to 36.

    Tables and Chairs

Place the tables for a progressive card party in a circle or inasstraight a line as possible, to prevent confusion in changing tables.Numbers for marking the tables may be purchased, or he worked inthe linen, cretonne, or sateen covers which the hostess ties over the

top of each table. If the games are more than four-handed, it is betterto use round tables. Uniform folding chairs and tables may be rentedin cities. To make room for the extra tables and chairs, some of theregular furniture may be moved out of the room in which cards areplayed.

    Ways for Finding Partners

The partners for each table may be decided simply by passing thetally cards, two of which are marked "Table No. 1, Couple No. 1"; two

more, "Table No. 1, Couple No. 2"; and so on for each table. If it is amixed company, have two designs in tallies, or have them tied withdifferent colored cordsone shade for the men and the other for thewomen. Each guest selects a tally without reading its inscription.

Sometime: the stiffness which marks the beginning of manyparties, before the actual playing begins, or while waiting for latecorners, can be broken up by busying the guests with novel ways offinding their partners. For instance, on the backs of half the tally orscore cards, write the names of famous characters, well-knownbooks, large cities or states. Have the holders of these cards pair withthose holding the companion cards hearing the names of thecharacters ordinarily coupled with those on the first set of cards, thenames of the authors of the books, or the nicknames of the cities orstates. Romeo and Juliet, Paul and Virginia, Faust and Marguerite,Dante and Beatrice, and dozens of others suggest themselves for thefirst idea. Main Street and Sinclair Lewis, Paradise Lost and JohnMilton,The Searle, Letter and Nathaniel Hawthorne, are examples ofthe books and authors plan.

The nicknames for the cities and states probably willrequire more time for solution. For cities, the nicknames are:Boston, "The Hub"; Brooklyn, "The City of Churches";Baltimore, "Monumental City"; Buffalo, "Queen City of theLakes"; Indianapolis, "The Railroad City"; Philadelphia, "The

City of Brotherly Love" or "Quaker City"; Detroit, "City of theStraits"; Chicago, "The Windy City" or "Garden City";Cincinnati, "Queen City of the West"; Cleveland, "Forest City";Pittsburgh, "Iron City" or "Smoky City"; Milwaukee, "CreamCity"; Washington, "City of Magnificent Distances"; St. Louis,"Mound City"; New Orleans, "Crescent City"; San Francisco,"Golden Gate"; Rochester, "Flour City": New Haven, "City ofElms"; Rome, "Eternal City"; Lowell, "City of Spindles";Nashville, "City of Rocks"; Keokuk, "Gate City"; and Hannibal,

    "Bluff City".

For states the nicknames are: North Carolina, "Old North";New York, "Empire State"; South Carolina, "Palmetto State";Rhode Island, "Little Rhody"; Ohio, "Buckeye State"; Con-necticut, "Nutmeg State"; Delaware, "Blue Hen State"; NewHampshire, "Granite State"; Pennsylvania, "Keystone State";Louisiana, "Creole State"; Illinois, "Sucker" or "Prairie State";Indiana, "Hoosier State"; Massachusetts, "Bay State"; Maine,

"Pine Tree State"; Virginia, "Old Dominion"; Texas, "Lone StarState"; Michigan, "Wolverine State"; Wisconsin, "BadgerState"; Mississippi, "The Bayou State"; Arkansas, "BearState"; Vermont, "Green Mountain State"; Iowa, "HawkeyeState"; Florida, "Peninsula State".

Halves of puzzle pictures, or playing cards cut zig-zag, orcards bearing the name of one of two associated articles, such as ham and eggs, ice cream and cake, hook and eye,

bread and butter, may be utilized in the same manner.

A great deal of merriment is caused by having the cardseach bear half of a limerick, a riddle, or quotation. If thecompany is a mixed one, see that the men get the first half ofall the cards and the women the other half, so that thecouples will be correctly paired.

Other methods for choosing partners will be found in the

descriptions of the card parties described hereinafter.

    Tallies and Scoring

The points or games may be scored in any way the hostessdesires. Sometimes the winner is decided by number of pointswon, and sometimes by number of games, although the former

plan is more customary nowadays. The score is kept at each

    12

  • 8/8/2019 How to Entertain With Cards

    14/47

table for the players thereat, on blank pads or regular score forms, and transferred to individual score or tally cards when it is time toprogress. The progressing scores may be marked by the scorekeeper of each table, or the hostess or her helper may mark scoresfor everybody. The score cards have a plus column and a minuscolumn. At the end of the playing, the points are totaled, thoseunder "minus" deducted from the 'plus", and the result taken forthe final score.

When the score is to be kept by the game, the winning playersfor each game receive a punch in their score card. In scoring halfgames, (ties), the punch may be in the edge of the card or in aportion of the tally ruled off for the purpose. Games may also bescored by giving small favors to the winners at each table; thepossessor of the most favors being the winner at the end of the play.Scores should never be totaled, discussed, or announced until it istime for the final addition.

Tallies and score cards in many beautiful designs may be pur-

chased from stationers, or they may be made at home.Progressive cards are played at three or more numbered tables,

Table No. 1 being called the head table. At the conclusion ofeachgame or specified period of play, the winning couple at each tablemoves to the table ahead, toward No. 1, at which table the winnersgenerally stay, although it is permissible to have the winners movefrom this table as from the others. Losers or winners, as the casemay be, go from the bead table to the foot, or booby table. Usuallythe players left at each table change partners with the newcomers. In this way new partnerships are formed for each game. The firstdeal is decided by cutting, low dealing. Ace is low. In a mixed crowd, the visiting (progressing) woman deals, after the first move.

Another plan for progressing is: After each game, let the winningwomen move up one table (from Table 1, down to lowest table), andwinning men down one table (from lowest table to head table), orvice versa. The losers remain at each table, either playing togetheror changing partners for the next game. Or have the men movetoward the head and the women remain seated. To avoid fatigue, this may be reversed during the latter half of the evening, the

women doing the progressing. Cut for deal at each change. Thissame plan may be used having the East and West or the North andSouth pairs do the progressing, and the others keep their places.

When it is desired that each pair play against every other pair, the following plan may be employed: Let the North

    13

  • 8/8/2019 How to Entertain With Cards

    15/47

and South pair at Table 1 act as a pivot, retaining their seatsthroughout the session. Let all the other North and South pairsmove up one table after each deal, retaining North and South seatsuntil they reach table No. 1 where, as the North and South seatsalready are occupied by the pivot pair, the newcomers take East andWest seats. The East and West pairs, after each deal, move downone table, except at the lowest table, at which they exchange for theNorth and South seats. Cut for deal at each change.

The time for progressing may be decided by having each tableplay until a certain number of points are reached by one person orone set of partners. At each table, after the hand in which thespecified sum is reached or over-reached (the additional points arecounted), the individual scores are written on the tallies, and theplayers remain inactive until a signal tells that all tables are ready toprogress. A. variation of this method is to have the head table playuntil a specified number of points is reached, at which time thesignal for progression is given, regardless of the points made at, theother tables. The hostess rules as to whether or not the other tablesshall have the privilege of playing out the hands on which they areengaged when the signal is given. Sometimes any table whichreaches the given score first gives the signal for all to progress.Another method is to have each table play for a certain number ofminutes. Probably the most common method of play, however, andthe one that seems fairest, is to have each table play one handaroundmaking four deals for a four-handed table, five for a five-handed table, and so on.

In case the number of players can not be divided to have all four-handed tables, at the last table may be played a two- or three-

handed game. In this case, two players progress. The rules for two-or three-handed games apply at this table. A very good rule is toallow no guest to remain at the short-handed table more than twogames. 1Ie should progress after the second game, whether winningor not..

In case of tied scores, progression may he decided by cutting; or,where the number ofgameswon decides the winner, each tied playermay receive credit for one-half of the game.

When entertaining only four people at cards, interest is added tothe game by having the partners change after a certain number ofhands or of points is reached.

Progressive Auction.Beginning at Table No. 1, the players fill upthe tables in order, and may choose any position or partner

    14

  • 8/8/2019 How to Entertain With Cards

    16/47

at the start, as they will separate and change partners for the nextround. Four deals should be played at each table, after which thewinners progress. Cut. for first deal in each round. For each andevery game of 30 points or more that may be won during the fourdeals, add 125 points bonus in honors; but add nothing extra for

winning a rubber. Unfinished games get no bonus. It i s notnecessary to win a game in a single deal to get the 125.

Six rounds, or twenty'-four deals, which take about two hours toplay, is the usual limit for games of this character.

    Prizes and Favors

It is not necessary to present prizes at a card party, but in most

communities it is customary to do so. The hostess may allot asmany prizes in any way that she wishes, but should never make anostentatious display in so doing. Some hostesses give a prize to theplayers holding the highest and next highest score; some add abooby or consolation prize for the one with the least points. Othersprovide as many prizes as there are tables, and permit the winnersto take their choice, the highest score making the first selection. Anhonor guest often is presented with a guest prize regardless of herscore.

When both men and women play, there should be as many prizesfor the men as for the women. If, due to an unequal division ofplayers, a woman should play in a man's place, she should beconsidered a contestant for the women's, not for the men's prizes. The same applies to a man taking a woman's place.

In ease two players are tied for any prize, they should either cutthe cards or play a game or hand to decide the winner. In case threeor four players are tied, they cut the cards, or play a game asindividuals, not as partners, the highest score taking the first prize,

the next, the second prize, and the third the consolation. In case ofa tie for the booby, the defeated player or lowest cut takes the prize.

Sometimes, when the hostess is averse to giving prizes, sheprovides favors for every guest. These may be attached to the talliesor form the place cards at the luncheon table. The tallies themselvesmay be fancy bags into which little trinkets are dropped by thewinner of each game. Each player keeps the bag and all the trinketsshe has won.

Evening RefreshmentsRefreshments for evening card parties may take the form of

chafing dish spreads, with lobster or shrimps a la Newberg, WelshRarebit, or Chicken a is King as the principal dish, served with toastand a beverage. Or they may be salads, sandwiches, and beverages;ice cream, cakes, and beverages; or any combination that would beserved at an afternoon affair.

    Sandwiches

The most delicious filling will not make an appetizing sandwichunless care has been taken to make the sandwich neat andattractive. This is the correct method: Use a square sandwich loafabout a day old, cut into even, thin slices, which are paired as theyfall from the loaf. Spread each slice with butter which has been

creamed to make it spread easily, add the filling, put the slicestogether, trim off the crusts with a sharp knife, and cut thesandwich into small pieceseither oblongs, triangles, or diamondsare the most economical. If you wish to cut fancy shapes, do sobefore the bread is buttered, to eliminate waste as much as possible.Have all fillings minced fine, and use thick mayonnaise that will not.run out of the sandwich or make it damp. Sandwiches, except thosecontaining very soft fillings, sliced tomatoes, or cucumbers, may beprepared beforehand, wrapped in waxed paper, then in a dampcloth, and kept on ice until serving time. Be sparing of lettuce in

making sandwiches, as it makes the sandwich come apart easily, and gives it a messy appearance. Try sandwich fillings between bitsof bread, to be sure they are seasoned highly enough. Much moreseasoning is required than if the fillings were to be eaten alone.

Layer SandwichesSpread a buttered slice of bread with choppedolives mixed with mayonnaise, another with pounded sardines andmayonnaise, another with pimientos and mayonnaise, a fourth withchopped hard boiled eggs and mayonnaise, a fifth with cream cheeseand chopped nuts; pile one on top of another, and top with a sixth

slice buttered side down. Place under a weight in a cold place untilready to serve, then trim off crusts with a sharp knife, and cut thesandwiches in thin slices like a layer cake.

V assar SandwichesMix equal parts of chopped dates andEnglish walnut meats, moisten with honey and lemon juice, andserve between lady fingers.

Lobster SandwichesSpread half the buttered slices withpounded lobster (either canned or fresh cooked) sprinkled with

chopped parsley and capers, and the rest of the slices with egg

yolk rubbed through a sieve, mixed with mayonnaise, and

    sprinkled with salt and paprika.

Caviar and Cheese SandwichesSoften Philadelphia cream

cheese with cream, spread it on very thin slices of brown

bread, and put bread together with caviar between.

Caviar SandwichesTo half a can of caviar add 1

tablespoonful each of lemon juice and onion juice. Spread

rather thin between tiny bread or cracker sandwiches.

    Marshmallow SandwichesPlace halved marshmallows be-

tween "fingers" of buttered bread, and toast the sandwiches onboth sides, in a hot oven; serve hot.

Cincinnati SandwichesChop together one small onion, 6

sweet pickles, 12 stuffed olives, and one teaspoonful of capers,

and mix with two tablespoonfuls of grated cheese and enoughmayonnaise to moisten. Season to taste with salt, mustard

and paprika. Good with rye bread.Fruit SandwichesDrain one can of pineapple and chop

contents with one-half a cupful of maraschino cherries, half a

cupful of candied ginger, moisten with mayonnaise, and

    spread between white bread.

Rolled SandwichesRemove the crusts from a day old

sandwich loaf, and with a very sharp knife cut it into %-inchslices. Place slices back into loaf form, and wrap together in a

damp cloth for two hours, when they will be soft enough to roll

with-out breaking. Spread each slice with softened butter anddeviled ham, roll it, wrap it around twice with oiled paper long

enough to twist tightly at each end, and place on ice until

    wanted. Remove papers before serving.

Shrimp SandwichesMix one small can shrimps, cleaned

and chopped, with 1% teaspoonfuls of anchovy paste, paprika

to taste, and enough mayonnaise to moisten.Date SandwichesChop together dates, nut meats, and

marshmallows, sprinkle them with lemon juice, and moistenwith thick whipped cream

Ham and Olive SandwichesChop cold boiled ham, freed of

all inedible portions, with stuffed olives, and moisten with

    mayonnaise.

Egg and OliveMix together chopped hard boiled eggs,

stuffed olives, salt, paprika, and mayonnaise.

Checkerboard SandwichesCut three slices each of white andgraham bread, %-inch thick. Put two graham slices together with a

white slice between, and two white slices with a graham slice

between, using any savory tilling. Put both piles under a light weightfor an hour, then cut. each into half-inch slices. and put all togetheragain with more filling, using first a slice from one pile, then a slicefrom another, so that the brown and white blocks alternate. Wrap ina damp cheese cloth, and keep under a light weight in a cool placeuntil serving time, then cut again in half-inch "checkerboard" slices.

Open SandwichesRounds, squares, or fancy shapes of brown orfirm white bread, spread with filling puton in a decorative mannerare a delightful change from the regulation sandwiches. Creamcheese decorated with pickled beet, or pimiento figures or flowers, makes a pretty sandwich; another suggestion is to make a white-of-egg daisy on a background of pimiento cheese, with egg yolk for thecenter; anchovy paste may be tubed on to a round of bread dividingit into sections each of which contains a different mixture, spreadfirmly on the sandwich, to avoid messiness in eating.

    Salad Suggestions

Card Part ies fo r Spec ia l Occ asio ns

    JANUARY

A New Year's Eve Card Party

The invitations may be written on white cards with engravedNew Year's motifs, and the guests asked to wear costumes givingtheir conceptions of what the fashions will be fifty years from now.

Startling futuristic or other creations can be evolved at littleexpense. Partners for play may be decided by matching the piecesof futuristic pictures which have been cut in half no cards cuta l i k e and distributed half to the men and half to the women.Gi v e each player a narrow neck ribbon or a bracelet made ofspool wire, on which are placed tiny brass bells as markers for thegames won. If score is kept by points, as in Five Hundred, give asmall bell for each hundred points. , When ten small bells areobtained they are exchanged for a larger bell signifying onethousand. The odd points can be carried on a tally and exchanged

for bells when even hundreds are reached. The jingling of the hellsadds to the New Year's atmosphere. Appropriate prizes are a tablebell, a three minute egg timer in the shape of an hour glass, diaries, and dated note books. An out-of-date calendar makes agood consolationprize.

Scat the guests for refreshments just before midnight, and havean hour glass for the centerpiece, so timed that the last of thesand runs out just as the town's bells and whistles announce theNew Year. Toy horns used as favors at each place, and the bells

won in the games, enable the guests to celebrate fittingly.A cake lettered with the date of the New Year may contain favors

which foretell the year's fortune for the ones who get them.Chicken salad, wafers, coffee, and ice cream molded inbell formsmake an ample menu.

    A Twelfth NightCard Party

Many pretty customs cluster around the sixth of January, calledTwelfth Night since it is the anniversary of the night when the wisemen, following the guidance of the star, reached the manger inBethlehem. Have the invitations and tallies star shaped, ordecorated with stars. Tiny gold stars may be pasted on the scorecards to mark games. Use the same motifs and unshaded candlesfor table decorations. Use star shaped cutters for sandwiches, andstar molds for ice cream. A Twelfth Night cake, containing a bean, pea, and clove is cut by the host. The two guests receiving thebean and pea are crowned with

    23

gilt pasteboard crowns as King and Queen for the remainderof the evening. The recipient of the clove becomes Court

Jester and dons a cloth or paper jester's cap, ornamentedwith bells, which has formed the centerpiece of the table. The

King or Queen must be addressed as"

    Your llajesty"

andtreated like royalty. Then the Wassail Bowl is passed, eachperson dipping out a piece of apple before drinking from thebowl to the health of the assembled company. This is the

correct recipe for Wassail:To each quart of new cider add1 saltspoonful ground nutmeg6 saltspoonfuls allspice2 saltspoonfuls cloves

2 sticks of cinnamonjuice of 2 oranges and 1 lemon cupful of granulated sugar

Bake two sour apples cut into rounds, then into quarters, until soft but not out of shape, in well buttered enamel pans.Place pieces in bowl, and pour on them the boiling spicedcider.

At the end of the evening the guests dismantle the house ofall its Christmas greens, each guest casting an armful on anopen grate fire or out-of-doors bonfire. This propitiates the evilspirits and insures good luck to the household for the coming

year. If the fire is out-of-doors it is a good plan to defer thepassing of the Wassail Bowl until the last moment, when a sipof the warm spicy drink sends the guests home warm andhappy.

    FEBRUARY - Valentine Card Party

Write the invitations in white ink on red cardboard hearts

or on special Valentine cards found at the stationer 's. As eachguest arrives, pin on her back a paper heart inscribed with a

word suggesting some phase of sentiment peculiar to the sea-son, such as: Ring, Honeymoon. Bride, Groom, Rice. Theguests are required to guess what is on their labels by

questions asked them by the other guests. For instance, thegirl marked "License" was asked "Did you give your real age?""Did you discover that your fianc had been married before?"and similar questions indicative of a trip to the marriagelicense bureau. This keeps the guests interested untileverybody arrives, when each is given one half of a card boardheart which has been cut apart in a serrated fashion similarto the edge of a Yale key. Partners for the game of hearts aredecided by

    24

matching the heart halves. Each player receives a fancy crepepaper basket in lieu of a score card, and at each progression

a candy heart is dropped into it for each ten points won. The

possessor of the most hearts receives first prize. A heart, shaped cake or kewpie dressed like a cupid makes a pretty

centerpiece. Narrow ribbons radiating to each place may end

in a pink heart on the under side of which is written afortune. Philadelphia cream cheese, colored pink withvegetable coloring and used between white bread, makes

attractive heart-shaped sandwiches. These may be servedwith heart-shaped timbales filled with creamed sweetbreads

or mushrooms, or lobster or beet salad (the latter made of whole cooked beets shaped with a heart sandwich cutter),

and pink ice cream. In cities, ice cream may be bought inheart, kewpie, and other appropriate shapes.

    A Leap Year Party

(This may be given any time during Leap Year)

The girls may he asked to escort the young men to a LeapYear party, and accord them the courtesies that men usually

show to womenstanding when the men stand, picking up

the things they drop, and allowing them to precede in goingthrough doors.

To choose partners, stretch a tape across the room, two

feet above the floor, and have the men standing along onewall take turns in rolling a ball underneath the tape to thegirls lined up against the opposite wall. The first girl to get

the ball, leap over the tape, and grasp the hand of the man

who rolled the ball wins hire for partner.

Old Maid may be played progressively, using a pack ofcards from which three of the queens have been removed. The

queen of spades is left in, as the Old Maid card. Players cutfor deal, the winner passing out the entire deck, one by one.Player at left of dealer then draws one card at random from

the dealer's hand, lays down on the table as many pairs

(pairing the two black cards of the same face value, and thetwo red in the same wayno pairs to be mixed colors) as hecan make from his hand, then offers his cards to his leftneighbor to draw from. The player out of cards first wins and

scores nothing. Each other player scores one for each cardleft in his hand, with the exception of the Old Maid, which

counts ten against its holder. Progress after each player hasdealt once, the two with the lowest scores progressing. Score

cards are mittens cut from colored cardboard.

Prize for the winning man may be a heart-shaped box filled withchocolates, and, for the girl, a box of cigars which prove to bechocolates also.

Original partners are resumed for refreshments. The girls servethe men 'with a buffet luncheon of sandwiches, olives, ice cream, cake, and coffee,.

Each man has to pay for his sandwiches and olives with acourtesy, for his coffee with a girlish giggle, for his ice cream with acoy look, and for his cake with a coquettish speech spoken soeveryone can hear.

    Washington'

s and Lincoln'sBirthdaysAt this season of the year the shops are full of patriotic favors,

tallies, and decorations for party use.

Rather a new idea for Washington's Birthday is to have an old-fashioned supper, followed by cards. hor the supper table use oldbrass or crystal candlesticks, plain white place cards decoratedwith a silhouette of our first president, and for the center-piece, aminiature tree from which hang candied or artificial cherries. Keepthe menu simple and old-fashioned:

Raw Oysters on the Half Shell

    Baked Virginia Ham.Baked Potatoes

    Hot BiscuitsPreservesEgg and Lettuce Salad

Frozen Custard (the ice cream of Washington's day)Pound cake

    Tea and Coffee.

At a Lincoln's birthday party, pair off partners by matchingcards, each of which hears half of one of Lincoln's sayings (to befound in quotation books or books on Lincoln).

Serve "poverty" refreshments, on a table covered with a red tablecloth or oil cloth. In the center build a log cabin of red receptionsticks, and surround it with a "rail" fence of the same candy, which the guests can eat later. Serve baked beans, using steelforks, cider, brown bread sandwiches, pickles, and big sugary

    doughnuts.

A Mad March Hare Card Party

Trace the outline of a rabbit in the corner of a correspondencecard and write thereon this invitation:

The Hatter and the Dormouse and the Mad March Hareallthree,

Would like to have the pleasure of your jolly company, Tohelp them celebrate in a manner fit and hearty

The umptieth anniversary of their famous "Mad Tea Party".

Below are the names of the hostess, and the day, date, and hour.

The guests arrive to find the rooms all upsetchairs crowded into aheap, books on the floor, curtains askew, card tables still folded, and jonquils and other spring flowers scattered on tables besidevases of water. The hostess explains that a March wind has justblown through her rooms and disarranged them. With the help ofthe guests the rooms are quickly put in order, and progressive FiveHundred begins, with rabbit-shaped tally cards. At the end of fourhands the hostess announces that all who already have madeslams must deduct 1000 from their scores, and in the future mustsubtract 500 for each slam. This causes much bewailing until, at

the end of the play, the hostess awards the first prize to the lowestscore, and the booby to the highest.

Tea is served at the dining table, bearing as centerpiece a toybunny with a high paper hat on one ear. China and silver are in ajumbled heap on a buffet, from which each guest selects what sheneeds.

When all are seated the hostess pours the tea, which is ac-companied by cinnamon toast, thin sandwiches of various kinds, tiny iced cakes, bonbons and salted nuts When all are eating

merrily the hostess calls out, "Change Seats", and every other guestchanges seats with his left hand neighbor. The new-comers at eachplace have to eat what they find there, regardless of personalpreferences. Places are changed several times during tea, wheneverthe hostess signals.

A St. Patrick's Day Card Party

Shamrock-shaped invitations and score cards, place cardsdecorated with Irish pipes, and favors of tall paper hats filled with

china pig bank. During the play serve "St. Patrick's Punch", made inthis way:

Bruise six stalks of mint in a punch bowl andpour over it the juice of five lemons, a bottle of

mint cherries drained from their juice, a cup anda half of sugar, two bottles of ginger ale, andenough fine cracked ice to dilute the drink to thedesired flavor and quantity.

Top eachrib with a green paper frill, and fill the center with a heap of smallbrowned potatoes with a small Irish flag stuck in the topmost one.

    APRIL

    An April Fool's Card Party

Write invitations in a circular spiral on small cards enclosed firstin small envelopes, then in a series of larger ones. The fun beginswhen the guests find a tin pan hanging over the doorbell with awooden spoon in lieu of a knocker. A hand-kerchief tacked to thefloor, a sprinkling of red pepper or snuff on the bowls and vases ofspring flowers, a "Wet Paint" sign which makes the guests avoid a

door that has not been painted for years, a "PoisonUse with care"sign on the candy jar, and the trick thread stunt all providemerriment until the card game can be started. The trick thread is awhite thread which the guests instinctively try to pick off from thehostess' dark dress, only to find that the harder they pull, the longerthe thread gets. Of course the thread has been pulled throughthedress from a spool concealed beneath. Papers, bearing requests like"Please ask me my age", and "Please poke me

gently," pinned on the backs of some of the guests create lots ofharmless fun.

For the card game, have tallies shaped like jester's caps, paintedon one side in gay colors. Low scores move. The winner for the dayreceives a tall, belled and be-ribboned jester's cap which he or shemust wear for the rest of the afternoon or evening. The secondscore receives a celluloid goose, and the lowest, a handsome prizewhich would ordinarily go to the highest score.

Refreshments may be elaborate or simple, but should be asdeceiving as possible. For a centerpiece, have a low basket or bowlpiled with the realistic imitation grapes, bananas, oranges, andother fruits to be found in stationery or novelty stores of the better

class. These are passed as a last course, at which time the guestsdiscover they are not real. They are kept as favors, being tilled withcandy if their construction permits. Place cards may be jesters'sticks topped with jesters' heads made from pasteboard or fromsmall celluloid dolls' heads decked with caps and hells. The menumay be served back-wards, starting with ice cream covered withground nuts and garnished with parsley so it looks like croquettes.Slices of unfrosted angel cake and devil's food may be put togetherwith frosting so they look like brown and white bread sandwiches.Place a fork on the plate with the ice cream croquettes to heighten the

    illusion.

    Other April Fool's dishes are:

Egg saladblanc mange molded in egg shells which are brokenaway before the "eggs" are placed in a bed of lettuce and coveredwith a thin cold custard which looks like mayonnaise. Bouillon maybe poured from a coffee pot into tea cups with salted beaten eggwhite to imitate whipped cream, and served with three-or four-layersandwiches with thick cream cheese and nut filling and "frosting"which fool one into thinking they are delicious cake; salad may be

served in baked potato cases; bonbons may be oyster crackers orpieces of cardboard dipped in chocolate and mingled with genuinecandies. Balls of white cream cheese tinted with vegetable coloringand capped on either side with halves of nut meats, masquerade asbonbons. English walnuts may be cracked to find that they containlarge olives, little foolish trinkets indicative of one's fate in life, or a written fortune. The fate or fortune nuts may be part of thecenterpiece. When gluing the halves of the nut shell together afterinserting the fortune, catch between them

one end of a ribbon to the other end of which a bell is fastened. The nutsare piled in the "fruit" centerpiece so that the guests can not see that theribbons are attached. The ribbons radiate to each place, with the bellshanging down over the edge of the table. At a signal from the hostess, each guest pulls a ribbon and receives the fortune.

pretty bowl or basket of spring flowers in the center of each. Flowertallies are passed as the guests enter, and each takes her place at once. The flower heads are wrapped in opaque tissueby the hostess. Each guest pulls up one flower, and brings it to bloom byunwrapping the tissue windings. There are two of each kind of flowerand the holders of each pair play together. Real flowers appleblossoms or irisdecorate the room.

A May-pole, about thirty inches high, made from a broom stick, enameled white and fastened to a stout base, makes an unusualcenterpiece for the refreshment table. Bank flowers and ferns to concealthe base, and fasten satin ribbons in delicate pastel colors at the top.Wind the ribbons a few times around the pole, then carry one to eachplace where it ends in a crepe paper basket of salted nuts. trimmed around the edge with pink roses, made by tintingflower-like bits of popped corn with a brush dipped in vegetablecoloring. Cut green leaves from angelica or thin slices of citron. If the hostess wishes to announce an engagement in an

unusual way, make miniature rose cakes, and place a cardbearing the names of the engaged couple between the twolayers. The guests suspect nothing unusual until they bite into

the card. A pair of card table covers, a pretty towel, and a

    kitchen apron make useful prizes.

    JULY

patriotic emblems. Red roses or poppies, any white flower, andbachelor's buttons carry out the color scheme. Partners may be

decided by matching cards each of which bears half of a

patriotic quotation, or well-known saying of a famous Ameri.can historical character. Score cards might be paper flags with

plain blue fields on which white or gilt stars are pasted toindicate games won. Tall crystal candlesticks containing red

candles, a pack of George Washington Congress playing cards, and a package of fire crackers make suitable prizes. Red, white

and blue refreshments are: tomato sandwiches; a salad made oflittle balls. of cream cheese sprinkled with paprika, arranged onthe white hearts of lettuce leaves with round red radishes sliced

    AUGUST

    A Chilly Card Party

Send out informal invitations on cards decorated with winter scenes, and use similar cards for tallies. Remove all

heavy draperies and furniture, and hang glass icicles from thechandeliers. Bank the fireplace with cotton sprinkled with

diamond (lust, have an electric; fan with white ribbon streamers

going, and use glass bowls of cool green foliage fordecorations. Have a "snow mound" (diamond dusted cotton

heaped around a small table or stool) in which is bedded acrystal punch bowl of ice cold lemonade, from which the

guests help themselves at will. Pieces of crystal glass areappropriate prizes. Lemon ice shaped into halls with a round

scoop, "snowball" round cakes dipped all over in white frostingand cocoanut, and white cream mints make cool lookingrefreshments.

    A " Se as ho r e " Card Party

City-bound guests bidden to an afternoon "Seashore CardParty" arrive to find the hostess ' rooms cooly decorated with

long grasses, ferns, water lilies, and bowls of gold fish. A tubcovered with green crepe paper and filled with sea sand stands

in the center of the living room or porch, and each guest is in-vited to dig with a child 's shovel until she finds a double shell

(on sale in novelty shops) containing her table and couplenumber. Prizes for the winners are a set of real shells forserving creamed fish; molds for making timbale shells: and,for booby, an imitation tortoise shell comb or an empty nut

    shell.

fish and plain butter sandwiches cut in fish shape, and tallglasses of lemonade with sprigs of mint peeping over the side.

    SEPTEMBER

    A Labor Day Card Party

The men asked for an evening card party on the first

Monday in September were given blank white tally cards andasked to write the name of their business or profession; then

    were passed to the women, who were asked to write an associatedword on another card. For instance "Lawyer" drew the word "Foolscap";"Dry Goods Merchant", "Calico". The sets of cards were then shuffledseparately, passed around, and the man and woman holding thematching cards became partners. Prizes for the men could be a self-sharpening pencil, a garden trowel, or other articles suggesting work;

for the women aprons or novel devices or utensils for makinghousework easier.

Since it is Labor Day the guests are asked to serve the re-freshments themselveseither from trays placed cafeteria-wise on thebuffet, or from the kitchen. If the guests are unmarried, they mayshut their eyes and draw from a "Jack Horner Pie" wrapped packagescontaining miniature favors signifying their future worka sewingmachine for a seamstress, pen for anauthor, cow for a dairy farmer, etc.

    An Automobile Party

Motorists will enjoy an "Automobile Party" to which both men andwomen are asked. The guests draw for places at the tables which areall labeled with names of well known cars, "Packard" or "Locomobile"for head table, and down through the different grades of machines to"Tin Lizzie" for the foot table. Occasionally the host calls out "Detour"and all those who have made a certain number of points have todeduct from their score as many points as the host decrees. A big

    punch bowl is labeled"

Stop Here for Gas", and all help themselves atwill. Prizes may be an automobile blue book, a collapsible cushion, atire gauge, folding drinking cup, a can of tire talc, or other articleuseful when motoring. After the prizes are given, the host comes inbearing a "road sign" lettered "25 steps to a country supper", andeveryone partakes of fried chicken, hot biscuits, jelly, vegetable salad, custard ice cream, plain cake, and coffee. An unusual tabledecoration is a new, Ford-size inner tube inflated and laid in thecenter of the table, with ribbon or smilax "spokes" leading to a lowbouquet which makes a "hub".

    OCTOBER

    An Autumn Card Party

An autumn party is a delightful change from the hackneyedHallowe'en Party. Have the invitations and score cards painted torepresent 'bright maple leaves, and decorate the rooms with foliageand brilliant zinnias and dahlias.

Give half the guests cards bearing the name of a leafelm, birch,horse-chestnut, etc.and to the others cards bearing an ink sketchof the leaves in question, which may be traced from illustrations indictionaries or botanical books. It is surprising how difficult thematching of leaves and sketches for partners will be. Use autumnlandscape playing cards. Use a low bowl of especially brilliant leaves

in the center of the table. Write a fortune for every guest present, and slip it between two leaves which you glue together. Tie brightribbon to the stems, put the fortune leaves in the center bowl withthe other leaves, and bring the ribbons out spoke-wise to eachplace. Each guest pulls a ribbon at a signal from the hostess andreads the fortune aloud.

An unusual autumn salad is made by paring and coring tartapples, and cooking them till soft, but not out of shape, in a syrupmade with red cinnamon drops and water, which turns the apples

red and gives them a delicious flavor. Chill the apples, place themon lettuce leaves, fill the centers with mayonnaise, and serve withcheese straws, sandwiches, Virginia reels (frosted doughnuts withcustard filling), and cider.

    An October Nut Party

The guests are asked to come dressed as "Nuts", adorningthemselves with the thing they most dislike. Thus, a man mayrouge his cheeks and paint his lips, and spray himself with strong

perfume, while a woman may wear a plug of tobacco on a cord as apendant. Squirrels adorn tallies and place cards. A hollowed-outpumpkin in the center of the dining table contains nuts, among

which are placed a few English walnuts containing favors orfortunes.

Chicken salad, nut bread sandwiches, salted nuts, black walnutice cream, and nut cake complete the "Nutty" menu.

    NOVEMBERA Japanese Card Party

As chrysanthemum is November's flower, a Japanese party withdecorations of these beautiful flowers and Japanese lanterns ismost appropriate for this month. Print the invitations in Japanesefashion on sheets of scarlet tissue or rice paper, starting in thelower right hand corner and writing upward. Use only Japaneselanterns for light, and use tallies on which

you have printed the little magic pictures purchased for a few centsa packet in oriental shops. Partners are matched by pairingpictures on the tallies. Appropriate prizes are dull green bowls ofbulbs, incense burners, Japanese wicker work baskets, pieces ofJapanese china, fan hack playing cards, and, for booby, a box ofJapanese water flowers. Use chrysanthemums on the dining table,

and chrysanthemum nut dishes, (which can be made at home bywinding strips of tissue chrysanthemum petals, curled with a hatpin, around paper nut cups). Serve vegetable salad, the vegetablescut in fancy shapes, salmon sandwiches, rice cakes, preservedginger, and tea.

    A Turkey Card Party

Ask guests to a turkey supper, followed by cards. Have aminiature barn yard in the center of the table, with papier-mache

turkeys eating kernels of corn which are scattered on the cloth. Turkey candy boxes make combination favors and place cards. When the food is served the guests are surprised to find that theyare not to eat turkey, but food that a turkey would enjoy. Cream ofcorn soup, fried oysters, corn bread, egg and lettuce salad, and bigbunches of malaga grapes are a suitable menu. A corn popper, holders used in eating sweet corn, a carving knife, and for booby abottle of "Corn Cure" suggest prizes for the game.

    DECEMBER

    A Christmas Card Party

An unusual note for a Christmas card party, for which thecustomary holiday decorations are used, is to provide each playerwith a tiny Christmas free, either the artificial ones or a spray of areal one bedded in the smallest size flower pot. The winners of eachgame receive a tiny trinket to hang on their trees. The player withthe best decorated tree receives the prize. The same idea can be

carried out using small Christmas stockings of tarlatan. Christmascakes, cookies, and candies, coffee, and grape syllabub may beserved at the card tables or at a holly decorated dining table. Tomake the grape syllabub whip one scant cupful of powdered sugarwith a quart of cream, and another scant cupful with four egg whites; then mix these ingredients thoroughly, add a glassful ofgrape juice and pour over cubes of sweet oranges, bananas, andcanned pineapple. Serve cold.

    PUBLIC CARD PARTIES

The following suggestions may be of assistance in arranging for alarge card partymodifications being made to suit the number ofplayers, size and shape of room, etc. For such an occasion a hotelusually offers more conveniences than a hall and, in contracting forsame, light, heat, dressing rooms, maids, chairs, and tables shouldbe included.

Tickets for a public card party are usually issued not less thanthree weeks in advance, the price varying to suit the occasion.

The tables and chairs for the players should be arranged instraight rows, whenever possible, progression being down one rowand up the next. This style of progression and arrangement isindicated on the chart, on page 38, which shows a layout for 236

    players.

To facilitate arrangements, the following committees may beappointed to advantage:

First Committeethree membersON HALLS.This committee to make all arrangements for hotel, tables,

chairs, cards, score cards, etc. It should have supervision ofthe chairs and tables, see that the playing cards are properly

assorted and placed on the tables, etc. It also should collect.the playing cards immediately after the play, with the aid ofsuch assistants as is necessary.

Second Committeethree membersON TICKETS. This committee should arrange for the printing of the

tickets, stamp or sign them, place them on sale in variousplaces, (keeping strict account of where placed, and with

whom), collect tickets turned in, and give them back to thetreasurer.

Third Committeethree membersON PRIZES.This committee should solicit or purchase prizes, select

from those secured the handsomest and most expensive forhead prizes, and distribute the balance for minor prizes.

If the affair is given for a charitable purpose, prizes may hesolicited from the local stores, these being added to from theexpense fund, if necessary. There are usually as many prizes asthere are tables.

    40/47

If men are to play, an equal number of prizes should be given for men and

    women.

A good plan for displaying prizes is to arrange a row oftables across the head of the roomone in the center for thehead prizes and one at the head of each row of tables for theminor prizes (see chart). The prizes on the table in the centerare then awarded to the players in any part of the room havingthe highest scores, while the prizes on the tables at the head ofeach row of the playing tables are given to the players havingthe highest scores in that row (at the end of the last game).Prizes are distributed in the different aisles by the women whohave charge of those aisles during play.

A Manager (with power to appoint an Assistant Manager),should be appointed to have supervision of all arrangements, committees, etc. A Treasurer should also be appointed to havecharge of the funds, and, if any corresponding is necessary, aSecretary may also be appointed.

The Manager should stand in as central a location aspossible (see chart), and announce the beginning and end ofthe games. The Assistant Manager or Treasurer may havecharge of the door and of any money taken in there.

The Manager, Treasurer, and Secretary should act asauditors of tickets and accounts.

Guests may select any table in any aisle at which to beginplay. There is no head table. Play should start at a specifiedtime, late corners being given no opportunity to make up lost

games. These should be assistants to make up tables with oddplayers, their places but not their scores being taken by guestsas they arrive.

When play starts, the Manager should read the rides govern-ing the games, explaining distinctly just how long each game isto last, how progressions are to be made, how prizes are to beawarded, how ties are to be decided, whether or not lone hands(if Euchre is to be played) are to be scored or permitted,

whether, or not half games arc to be scored, whether the first

deal of each game is to be decided by cutting or otherwise, whether losers or winners progress, whether women playing inthe place of men, or men playing in the place of women, areentitled to the prizes for their own or opposite sex, etc. Theserules should be arranged by Committee No. 1, and should beclear, plain, and distinct.

    39

    41/47

After the rules are read a bell may be tapped or whistleblown to indicate that play is to begin. The whistle announces

the end of each game, and the attendants in each aisle punch

the tallies or O. K. each individual score. When all

progressions have been made and games scored, the bell or whistle is again sounded for the next game, and so on

throughout the play. At the conclusion of the last game theguests, to avoid confusion, should be requested to remain

seated and absolutely quiet until after the prizes are awarded. The Manager then asks those present who have won the

highest possible number of games or points to stand up and

come forward to the head prize table. If no one stands, the

Manager then calls the next lower number, and so on until all

the prizes are gone, the prizes being awarded to each winneror group of winners before the next number is called.

A good plan to decide ties for prizes is to have the tied con-testants for each prize draw from numbered slips, laid face

downward on a table. Thus, if there are four contestants forthe prize, the slips should he numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4, and

should be thoroughly mixed and laid face downward, each

contestant in turn drawing one, first choice or prize going toholder of slip No. 1, etc.

The general or head prizes should be awarded first, to theplayers in the entire room having won the most games or

points; after which the prizes in each row of tables areawarded to the highest remaining scores in the roweach row

    being taken up in turn.

A different game may be played in each row if desired.

More complete rules for large card parties, including rules

for duplicate and pivot auction, are given in "Official Rules ofCard Games", which can be obtained by mailing 20c to The U.

    S. Playing Card Co., Cincinnati, Ohio.

    A Lenten Charity Card Party

Women who object to playing cards for prizes in Lent

usually are glad to attend a party to which the admission feeis a potted plant. The plants are sent to hospitals and

charitable institutions. This idea is especially good for churchaffairs.

How to Organize a Card ClubThe woman, or group of women, who wishes to organize a card

club, writes notes to a certain number of congenial people,

requesting them to meet at a designated place to discuss theformation of the club. It is a good idea to ask one person less thanthe number needed to make up the desired number of tables. Thenthe hostess for the day always has the privilege of asking an honorguest.

Rules for the club shall be decided upon at the initial meeting. Toshorten the preliminaries, the sponsors should have written downtentative suggestions regarding place and frequency of meetings, hours of play, fines, dues, number of prizes, prize giving and taking, refreshments, and methods of obtaining substitutes and inviting

new members. There should be hard and fast rules covering allthese points, if harmony is to abide with the organization. If it isdeemed necessary, and the rules chosen for the club require them, apresident, treasurer, and secretary may be elected, and a prizecommit tee, either appointed by the president or elected by themembers, may be selected. The treasurer of the club would be thelogical chairman of this committee. The secretary of the club shouldkeep track of meeting places, inviting new members, etc.

The following suggestions may be helpful in making the club

    rules:Meetings

As a rule, once in two weeks is often enough to have a card clubmeet. Members gradually lose interest if meetings are held less often, and weekly meetings interfere too much with the members otherduties. The day and hour of meeting can be decided by ballot. Themost satisfactory method of arranging place of meeting is to haveeach member entertain the club in turn, her place in the rotationbeing decided by the alphabetical position of the first letters of her

surname. Only severe illness in the house, or a similarcircumstance, is considered sufficient excuse for failure to entertainin one's turn. Any member who wishes another to entertain in herplace, without urgent reason for so doing, should be compelled topay a specified sum into the club treasury, and should be compelledto take her turn at entertaining later.

    Fines

At each meeting the play should be commenced at a specifiedtime. Every late comer should be fined a certain number of

    41

  • 8/8/2019 How to Entertain With Cards

    43/47

points from her score for the first ten minutes which shekeeps the guests waiting, and an additional number ofpoints for each additional five minutes she is late. Noexcuse can win an exemption from this rule.

    Dues

If desired, each member may be required to pay thetreasurer a certain sum at each meeting, the amount tobe saved for a given purpose, (such as a special party forthe club members, or for gifts or donations shouldoccasion arise), or to be used for prizes, or simply givento the hostess to help defray the expense of the occasion.

    Prizes

The most satisfactory plan is to set a scale of valueswhich prizes cannot exceed. Unless this is done, there issoon a rivalry among the different hostesses to outshinethe other members in the value of the prizes. One plan,

where the dues are used for prizes, is to divide the suminto three graduated sums for f irst, second and thirdprizes, the hostess to select anything she wishes at

about the designated value. Another plan is to have aprize committee purchase the prizes, perhaps following aspecified plan as to kinds of articles selected. Anothermethod is to give the winners first, second and thirdchoice of prizes, in the order of their scores. The prizecommittee changes after the members have eachentertained once. A rule also should be made that nomember can accept first prize more than two or threetimes in succession, and that no member can win anyone prize more than a certain number of times in a year.

    Refreshments

Each hostess should be limited to a certain number ofdishes for her refreshmentsperhaps one beverage; onemain dish, such as salad or ice cream; oneaccompanying dish, such as cheese straws, one kind ofsandwiches, one kind of cake; and choice of a relish, bonbons, or salted nuts. This rule can be expanded or

contracted to meet the desires of the members or to suitthe time at which refreshments are served; but once therule is made and agreed upon, any violator should becompelled to pay a cash fine. Otherwise the menus willgradually expand and elaborate until the club meetingsare a burden, instead of a pleasure to the hostess.

    42

  • 8/8/2019 How to Entertain With Cards

    44/47

    Obtaining Substitutes

Club members should be liable to a fine if they stay away from aclub meeting for any but an urgent reason. The defaulter shouldnotify the hostess and try to help in finding a satisfactory substitute

if the hostess has no one she wishes to ask. Or the finding of asubstitute may be left to the club secretary. In case several membershave friends whom they desire to have visit the club they may rotatein inviting substitutes.

    New Members

When any member is absent from a specified number of meetingsduring a
