How to Eat Healthy at the Workplace
Wanting to be healthy and at a good weight is on most peoples’ wish lists. However the reality at
many jobs is that the work is often sedentary and co-workers sabotage diets with tasty treats or
workers grab quick bites of food at their desks, using food to relieve the stress of the job. Eating
healthy at the workplace can happen, however, with a little planning and some strategies for
dealing with workplace situations.
Plan the Night Before
Take time in the evening to pack a healthy lunch to take to work. A good salad with protein or a
whole grain sandwich with vegetables will make all the difference in your day. You’ll have a
good lunch to look forward to in the morning and a lunch with protein and fiber will keep you
full all afternoon without adding sluggishness from too many carbohydrates and fats.
Eat a Healthy Breakfast
Before going into work, be sure to eat a breakfast that is high in protein. It can be as simple as a
protein shake with fruit or some Greek yogurt with nuts, or as elaborate as an omelet and whole
grain toast. By eating breakfast you are setting yourself up for success the rest of the day.
Doughnuts will not tempt you because and you’ll be less likely to need snacks or a huge dinner
later in the day.
Keep Healthy Snacks at Work
Sometimes you will find that you just need a snack or a boost of energy in the afternoon. Avoid
the bowl of candy in the break room and instead have a handful of nuts, an apple, or some sliced
vegetables that you have on hand for snacks. Even a slice of cheese will keep your energy levels
high and treat your taste buds without adding to many carbs.
Drinks Lots of Water
Sometimes we feel hungry because we are dehydrated. Sip water throughout the day. And before
an office party where you know there will be cake or treats offered, drink a large glass of water
before you go. You’ll feel more full and will be more likely to stick to a small slice of cake.
Create an Afternoon Ritual to Relief Stress
Taking the time to walk around the office, taking five minutes for deep breathing, or making a
nice cup of herbal tea, all will help you to relax and refresh yourself in a way that doesn’t involve
food and will help you to refocus and get your work done for the day.
