Household HazardousWaste
What is Household Hazardous Waste?Household hazardous waste is any materialdiscarded by a household which is difficult todispose of or which puts human health or theenvironment at risk because of its chemical (orbiological) nature.
Hazardous waste must be disposed of responsibly.Please contact your local authority (details overleaf)to arrange a collection.
Examples of Household Hazardous Waste
Only certain types of household hazardous waste canbe taken to your local HWRC for safe disposal.
Used motor oilHousehold and vehicle batteriesFluorescent tubes and low energy lightbulbsTVs and computersFire extinguishers (except halon ones whichcan be collected through the local council service detailed overleaf.)
Please ensure that you place them in thedesignated container. No other types of householdhazardous waste can be accepted at HWRCsincluding paint and asbestos
• Asbestos e.g. ironing board mat or old asbestos guttering
• DIY products e.g. oil based paint, varnishes,paint stripper and some wood treatments (note:creosote is now banned for amateur use)
• Flammable liquids e.g. white spirit, paraffinand wood dyes
• Garden chemicals e.g weed killers & insect killers
• Poisons e.g. rat and mouse poisons• Household cleaning products and
chemicals e.g. toilet cleaners, drain cleanersand bleaches
• Motoring products e.g. antifreeze andbrake/clutch fluid
• Swimming pool chemicals e.g. chlorineadditives, pH adjusters and algicides
Safety Advice:
Do not dispose of any hazardous waste bypouring it down the sink, toilet or drain
Do not burn any hazardous waste on agarden bonfire as it can be dangerous
Do not dispose of hazardous waste in your bin
Make sure containers are properly labelledand follow manufacturer’s instructions
Store chemicals safely and away fromchildren and pets
Only completely empty containers can beplaced in your bin

Water based paint – If you have less than 1/4tin left, leave the lid off and mix with dry sandor soil until completely solidified. Then doublebag it and place in your black bin. No liquidpaint must be placed in your bin or taken toa Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Oil based – This method should not be usedfor solvent based paint. Contact your localauthority to arrange a collection.
What can I do with leftover paint?
• Try to use up any leftover paint by adding asecond coat, using the product elsewhere in yourproperty or passing it on to family or friends to use.
• Try to buy the correct amount of paint you need.
