You will have to shake the bag and move it around, making sure the alcohol washes all of the dirt and grime from the Sensor. Another option would be to go to your local auto parts store and buy a special Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner, and spray it onto your vehicles Sensor to clean all dirt from it.

How to Detect and Clean a Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor

Basically a Mass airflow sensor (MAS) monitors the mass of air entering a vehicle’s

fuel injection engine, and passes that data to the Engine Control Unit as oxygen & fuel are the necessary elements to create combustion. Combining the right amount of fuel with the

right amount of oxygen is essential in maintaining maximum engine performance.

The air mass information is necessary for the ECU to correctly balance and deliver the

correct amount of fuel to the engine. Your car engine features either a vane meter or hot

wire sensor. There are two types of different mechanisms used to measure airflow entering the

engine. A vane meter utilizes a spring-loaded arm while the hot wire uses a heated wire. Both

use temperature and air volume to calculate air mass.

When a vehicle’s mass airflow sensor is faulty or defective it can cause a variety of

problems, and usually results in very poor performance from your engine. Car engine

could be very hard to make a start or make a turn over or could stall shortly after starting. There

could be symptoms of jerking during acceleration or could drag under load or when left in idle

mode.

Here are few guide lines which you can do it yourself at your home garage :

To clean Mass Air Flow sensor, you will have to take it out and for that you will have to

open your vehicle’s Air box. While removing the Sensor there could be few wires

attached which are delicate and small be cautious while unplugging them & do remember

their individual circuit slots for later rewiring purpose.

There are two options. The cheapest option would be to take your Mass Airflow Sensor

and place it in a plastic bag filled with rubbing alcohol. You will have to shake the bag

and move it around, making sure the alcohol washes all of the dirt and grime from the

Sensor. Another option would be to go to your local auto parts store and buy a special

Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner, and spray it onto your vehicles Sensor to clean all dirt from

it.

After cleaning your Mass Airflow Sensor with either the cleaner, or rubbing alcohol, let it

generally sit around for about 20 minutes or more. The Sensor has to be completely dry

before it can be reinstalled in your car, otherwise you may damage it. Replace the cleaned

Sensor in the engines Air box and plug the wires in their individual slots.

Cleaning your cars Mass Air Flow Sensor every six months or whenever you change your

vehicles engine oil would be a good idea as you could save your valuable time and

money.

You need to know the various symptoms of a bad Mass Air Flow Sensor, to diagnose the

problem accurately.

Troubleshooting of Mass Air Flow system is usually beyond the abilities of a

do-it-yourself er because it often requires specialized training and tools & could

mess up your hands. In case, you are not confident about pulling off this

procedure, take the help from a Car mechanic. Staying alerted from any of the warning signs mentioned above, you will have a much
