Mobile Content Design Tips

The blending of a person’s digital world with their real life, activities, and needs is the real mobile revolution. It’s a new form of communication, adopted en masse because of its naturalness to our daily lives. Consider the following guidelines when you design for mobile devices:

•Design for multiple screens:– Identify the devices that you will support.– Understand the capabilities of each device.– Create a default reference design for the devices.– Define rules for content and design adaptation.– Incorporate web standards and a flexible layout.

• Consider what makes mobile devices unique:– Explore how touch targets, gestures, and actions can be

used for interactivity.– Learn how to leverage the device hardware and software

capabilities, such as geo-location, sensors, camera functions, and messaging.

– Simplify your user interface to accommodate the smaller screens.

– Don’t count on traditional interface elements, such as button states that change on mouse-over.

– Consider whether your experience has to support both portrait and landscape orientation.

• Consider context:– Design experiences that are based on “quick bursts” of

information, which is how people use their mobile devices.

– Remember that most people use smaller devices one-handed and tablets with both hands.

• Always prototype:– Iterate often, and take advantage of user feedback to

improve more quickly. By developing a more agile process, your concepts will adapt to what users really need and want. Without prototyping, you may have limited insight into the effectiveness of your design.

Over the next 5-10 years, more people will turn to typing on glass than on a physical keyboard.
