In exactly the same way that GREAT
bosses are known to share a com-mon set of positive leadership at-
tributes, professional strengths and
valuable skills, BAD bosses also
share a common set of coun-
terproductive mentalities, self
-defeating attitudes and ques-
tionable behaviors. And in both
cases – good boss or bad boss – these inherent interpersonal char-
acteristics will consistently mani-fest, regardless of the environment
an individual is in.
Hence when dealing with a bad boss,
it is actually very easy to identify his
or her weaknesses, and to target the
boss’s weak spots and fears to break
him or her down.
This does not mean that you have to change who you are or
try to be someone you are not. You just have to
fine-tune your approach with the bad boss…
because the bad boss is obviously not going to change who he or she is either.
So in the case of dealing with an insecure boss, you may carry on being vocal if
you are an outspoken individual by nature, but you need to be vocal in a way that
makes the insecure boss recognize that you are not a threat to him or her.
The list of bad boss behaviors could go on and on, but here‟s the rub. Once you put your boss‟s behavior under close
scrutiny, you will know pre-cisely what to do (or at the very least, what not to do), to deal with your bad boss. How so?
Clearly the LAST thing
you want to do, in
any encounter with
your bad boss, is to
clash head-on with
him or her. For example, if you know
that the boss is
insecure, it is in your
best interest to make
him or her feel less
threatened by you.
If the newsletter is distributed internally, you might comment
upon new procedures or im-
provements to the business.
Sales figures or earnings will
show how your business is
growing.
Some newsletters include a column that is updated every
issue, for instance, an advice
column, a book review, a letter
from the president, or an edito-rial. You can also profile new
employees or top customers or
vendors.
This story can fit 100-150
words.
The subject matter that appears in newsletters is virtually end-
less. You can include stories
that focus on current technolo-
gies or innovations in your field.
You may also want to note busi-
ness or economic trends, or
make predictions for your cus-
tomers or clients.

Does your boss insist on his/her view or
approach always being correct, and push the
blame to others when things go astray? It
might be that the boss is deeply knowledgeable
and experienced about the subject... or it is more
likely that the boss is an egoist who is too
proud to admit mistakes or fallibility.
Does your boss surround him or herself only
with “yes” people who agree with everything the
boss says? The boss is almost definitely
insecure about his or her abilities, and feels
threatened by those who are vocal, competent
and possess a strong mind of their own.
Observing the behavior of your
bad boss is the first step to
identifying his or her
weaknesses.
Does your boss seem to create unnecessary
chaos and confusion in the team? It is likely
that the boss has poor communication skills,
and lacks interpersonal sensitivity. But if the
boss is ordinarily a strong communicator,
then it can only mean that the boss is clueless
and unable to handle the work assigned to
him or her. (Bad boss philosophy: if you can’t
convince your team,… confuse them)

In summary, the trick to dealing with bad bosses - anytime,
anywhere - is to be proactive yet non-hostile in your
approach. When you have a boss who is insecure, egoistic,
micromanaging, political, abusive, unreasonable, unprofessional or
just plain BAD, you must take action to keep your bad boss under
control (and to keep your sanity)… never allow yourself to be a silent victim of a bad boss! However, to minimize the risk
that you may be later on faulted for your actions, your
approach must always be non-confrontational, and based on a
clear understanding of the weaknesses of your bad boss.
