TO MY ENGLISH READER

IT is with pride that I give Messrs. Fowler& Co. permission to issue this edition of thislittle book. It has passed already throughsix editions in the country of its birth, andnow I trust, as it is to become a citizen of"The Mother Country," it will find asgracious a reception in the land of myancestors.

Truth is universal. It has no geographicallimits, and knows no nationality. Its missionis to bind mankind into one Brotherhood. With this little text-book of Life I sendthe silent Suggestion to you. Under theuniversal banner of Love we conquer Fate !under it I win Health, Success and Pros-perity.

Truly your friend,HENRY HARRISON BROWN.

INTRODUCTION

THIS volume contains the most importantknowledge man can possess-i.e., knowledgeof the Power to control his own Destiny. In his own life, and that of many others, the author has seen the demonstration of thisPower. The reader has but to follow theinstructions herein laid down to reach thatcondition of realisation which Jesus knewwhen He affirmed: "I and My Father areONE."

The way is easy. Its principle is Truth. Its incentive is Love. Its result is Life"more abundantly." That there may beunderstanding, in Part I. the philosophy ofUnity has been elucidated and verified by theLaw of Vibration.

That this Principle of Unity and the Lawof Vibration may be applied to daily thinkingand living, in Part II. the Principle of Sugges-tion is unfolded. This is an ever-present andan ever-active Principle. He who accepts, understands and applies it, attains masteryover all conditions. This principle is thebasis of the many metaphysical movementsof the day, and, when intelligently obeyed, gives one all the power that any "healer"possesses.

viii INTRODUCTION.

That the reader may attain this power, methods of thinking and affirming arescattered through these pages. At the closeare affirmations for practice that all may, through a trained Will, learn "The Art ofLiving." The end and aim of the book isto help the reader to Self-Control. Noperception of Truth ever gave man suchPower as does this of Self-Suggestion, or, aswe will term it, AFFIRMATION. It is thediscovery that Thought is Force and thatman can control, in its objective expression, this Infinite Sub-Conscious Life, which isthe Real Man-the Ego-and thus controlFate.

All the mystery of the ancient and modernschools is cleared away from the subject, andall the misconceptions of theology are avoided. As Darwin investigated, and as Spencerreasoned, upon objective phenomena, theeffects, so have I tried to investigate andreason upon the Cause, the Subjective man.

The Spirit that has inspired me is that ofthe Affirmation, ALL IS GOOD. I havetried to let it manifest in me under that NewCommandment, " That ye love one another."

PART I

THE SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHYOF LIFE

Unity. UNITY of nature is now the basicthought in science and in the new

Philosophy. The ancient and child-manthought duality. This conception, whichfrom earliest times has dominated the concep-tions of man, has passed from the mind of thepresent thinker. With it must pass all theold conceptions of man and nature. Withthese conceptions must also ultimately passthe customs, laws and theologies based uponthe unscientific, primitive conception ofnature as duality.

This conception of unity, as opposed to thatof duality, is destined by evolution to work arevolution whose import it is now impossibleto over-estimate.

Half OUR science has not been halfScience. science, even since Darwin and

Spencer gave it the key to all theknowledge which comes to the soul from theexternal consciousness by observation and

reasoning. Darwin gave man his first trueconception of the world without himself.

The survival, in greater or less degree, ofthe idea of dualism in the scientific mindand in philosophic speculation, has so coloredinvestigation that constantly there has risenfrom it the idea of limitation, division, antagonism, contest, struggle, etc. Thisconception of duality has either been presentor has been introduced as explanation inmuch scientific reasoning, and in the mostindependent minds it has at least beenrecognised as a fact of nature. This concep-tion is so false that the New and ComingPhilosophy will bear the same relation to theold as the child does to the man.

Revolution. IT is safe to say that thisconception of an all-pervading

Unity is destined to work a change in thoughtand life greater than that wrought byCopernicus when he "changed the front ofthe universe," or by Jesus, when He liftedphilosophy from Force to Love. Darwinand his co-workers not only threw miracleand supernatural into law, but they did more;they destroyed duality, and though thisthought has been constantly permeating thecommon mind, it has been overlooked by

philosophers. But common sense has joinedunconsciously with the demonstrations ofscience and made mind and matter into oneunity. The result of this can be only dimlyforeseen. But this I prophesy:-in future, man will look within himself and not without,as now, for knowledge and direction-willfind the universe in himself and not, as now, himself in the universe. This is the greatestchange of front man has ever made. It isrevolution, but until he makes it he is neithertrue nor free.

Tendency THIS tendency of thought isof Thought. seen in every new work in

philosophy and in every newdeduction of science. Few are there whodare to follow out to the end logical conclu-sions, or are free to give to the world theclearest light of their reasoning. ProfessorW. J. Powell, of the Government EthnologicalBureau, has recently published a work whichis destined to rank high in the future for itsinsight and its reasoning on the Oneness ofnature. Professor McGee, in reviewing thebook in The Forum, says of Prof. Powell:"Accepting the observed unity of matter andmotion, Powell is able to escape thatbesetting dualism that has clung to the

12 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

human mind ever since the sylvan savage firstnoticed front and rear, this side and thatside."

"This observed unity" is the basis ofreasoning and of life in Soul Culture. SoulCulture is, therefore, that coming thing whichis neither religion nor science, but is the unionof the two, Soul being the religious side, andCulture being the scientific side of the thought. Its first affirmation is Unity. This affirmationis constantly repeated until it becomes theinstinctive thought to solve all problems oflife.

One- ALL is One-Something ! TheSomething. name is of no consequence. I

would not quarrel with one whowould say Brahm, God, Force, or anyother term that to him meant Unity. I findit more acceptable to say,-All is Spirit. What Spirit is, can be answered only bysaying: Spirit is All, and All is to conscious-ness only differing manifestations of Spirit.

Duality. THERE are not two forces, twoantagonistic somethings, warring

in nature for mastery. These two thingshave heretofore been in the mind balanced. Some of these warring mental twins areGod and Devil, angels and demons, men and

Page 12: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 13

women, spirit and body, mind and matter, matter and motion, matter and spirit, goodand evil, health and disease, life and death-as separate entities. These are two only tothe child-man, who reasons from appearances, but to him who looks at cause they will everbe manifestations of the One. There are nodouble standards. One reigns forever, andthat one is Mind or Spirit-omnipotent,omniscient and omnipresent. Cause beingOne, there can be only harmony. There canbe no antagonism ; no struggle; no contest;no evil; no wrong; no progress. There canbe only manifestation of the One in harmonyand in purpose, or it would be self-destructive,and there would in time be not even One.

Cause. THE One manifests in manymillion ways, but they are all

harmony, all good and right, or they are alldiscord, and evil and wrong. To Cause-theOne-these names are not given, but theyare names man gives to effects. They arevery readily transferable and are transferredso constantly that no standard as to good, etc., has ever been found permanent amongany people, and never one for the race. The only one ever held in theory is the one inall theologies, which is the belief that the

14 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

Supreme Power can do no wrong. But thishas rarely descended to practical application.Yet its evidences how dimly man has seen, but how truly he has ever felt the factwhich science to-day demonstrates, that theUniverse is one energy. Thus, in the NewPhilosophy, these terms mean nothing whenapplied to nature, but are significant whenapplied to man himself. They mean in himeffects of the one Cause. They are namesfor his convenience alone. They meannothing as to Cause itself.

Fate. MAN is thus his own Fate, inas-much as he has power to choose,

to use and to name, and as fast as he learnshis power to control the manifestations of theOne, he shall decide how and when thispower shall in manifestation serve him. Thus, in future, man, instead of being slaveor creature to an outside power as in all thepast, shall BE that power and manifest as hechooses; shall make all other manifestationsobey him instead of obeying as now. Heshall no longer fear a god outside himself, but reverence himself as a manifestation ofthe Indivisible God. He shall not only choosehow he shall himself manifest, but he shalldecide how all other manifestations shall

Page 14: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. i5

affect him, or whether they shall affect him atall. And he shall control all manifestationsof a less pitch in vibration than his own, bethey manifestations known as heat or humanthought. He will, by choice, adapt manifesta-tions to himself, or himself to vibrations, untilhe finds his ideal of happiness, or, what isthe same, until every manifestation of theOne gives him pleasure.

Man. ALL reasoning will hereafter befrom Man, and from Man as centre

of the universe, and from the universe onlyas the circumference of Man. It is withMan alone, then, that Soul Culture deals.Man is to us the representative of All.In him we find All; and in studying him,we study All. If science wants to usethe term Force, let it be understood thatit is the same to Soul Culture as the termI use-Spirit. Not yet has Spirit to sciencethe same meaning as Force. Therefore,Spirit is used here. Both are terms forTHAT WHICH IS-THE I AM THAT I AM.For Truth knows only unity-"The onethat inhabiteth eternity." Man is, there-fore all the rest is. Without the ear, nosound; without the eye, no light; withoutthe nerve, no sensation. Hence without

16 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

Man, no anything. Without Man, no God-no One. Man is All.

Logic. THIS is logic. Dare we accept itand live it? Soul Culture says:

Yes. Can we demonstrate our logic to bethe truth? Soul Culture does. Hence the"about face" that must come in science.Where it now looks outside Man to vibration,it will look within and declare Sensation tobe All. For, despite learned libraries, allthat is known is Sensation. When man iswise, he will study only Sensation, forSensation is to Man-All. Where mannow knows only in part, all will then beopened to him. Where he "now seesthrough a glass darkly," he will then, aSpirit, see Cause face to face. How? Byrecognising faculties in himself that allayhim with Cause, by recognising himself aspart of the indivisible One. In fact, throughhis recognition of oneness with Spirit, he willdeclare himself Spirit, and hence regard him-self as Cause. Nothing comes except byevolution. And, as the faculties we nowmanifest have been gradually developed be-cause the Soul pushed them out and thenthey have been cultivated, so have thepsychic faculties by which we take hold on

Page 16: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 17

Cause instinctively made themselves mani-fest. Now we have to be only equally wisein cultivating them. As our ancestors havebeen cultivating eye and hand, so must wecultivate these psychic faculties, and by thusbecoming aconscious factor in our own evo-lution, become soon consciously one withUnity.

Matter. THIS intellectual position ignoresentirely the thought of physical

Man. Since matter and motion are oneMan cannot be two-i.e., matter and motion. If matter is, then physical Man is. If mo-tion is, then Man is motion. Therefore, letus be logical and say:-All is matter, henceMan is matter-or, say all is motion, henceMan is motion-Spirit. Both physical andspiritual, Man cannot be. Science has decidedthis forever. There is only motion. Matteris only a form of motion; so is heat; so arethe other so-called physical forces. By tele-pathy, thought and emotion have beendemonstrated to be motion; therefore, nolonger can Man be thought of as a physicalbeing.

Evolution. HERE is the key to the comingevolution. This Man of unity

explains the vagaries, sophistries, mysticismsB

of "Christian Science," Theosophy, and kin-dred movements. Their teachers perceive thistruth dimly, but, lacking the scientific spirit, they have become blinded by the excess oflight. Science will explain the manifesta-tions of all these, as it has explained thosewith which it has already dealt, and will findthe One Force behind all. That force Mancan know and master. Gods, angels, mahat-mas, spirits, if they exist, are either humanor of human creation. Above Man, therecan be nothing; for, beyond "Spirit con-scious of its own existence" (Hegel's defini-tion of Man) nothing is possible. Manmay manifest to infinity. Some man welldeveloped may show himself to one lessdeveloped, and he who sees may say, "God,""Mahatma," etc. But what of that? Whathe is, I am.

Not To declare that Man is notEddyism. physical, is as far from the

Eddy folly of saying, "Youhave no body," as it would have been, whenCopernicus said, "The sun stands still," tohave said, " There is no earth." We havebody, as we have thought, and even the moststrenuous Eddyite will think. Both body andthought are manifestations of force and only

differ as heat and light differ-in pitch(length and speed of vibration).

To this conception of nature are allthese various systems of "Divine Science,""Christian Science," and other more or lesstrue philosophies, bringing the common mind. They are Johns, some of them not clad evenin the skins and camel's hair of truth, butall crying in a wilderness of materialisticthinking, "Prepare ye the way." And, lo,here comes the Messiah of Science, saying:-"I am Unity."

Sensation. SOUND, light, heat, electricity, magnetism, phosphorescence, X-

ray, chemical affinity, and other known formsof force are now known to be one, differingonly in rates of vibration. Therefore mustwe, in this thought of unity, now study manand regard not only body, but thought, love, hate, sorrow, sexual passion, and all otheremotions as forms of the one energy, differingonly in the rate of vibration. That is, wehave to study only the effect of vibrationupon self-that is, study Sensation.

Force. As force and as a manifestationof force, Man can be as intelli-

gently studied as have been the recognisedforces of science and their effects. And, as

Page 19: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

20 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

Man has learned to control those for hisbenefit, so can he learn to control this forcewhich is himself. He as force manifests asthought, emotion, and psychic power. As hehas interrogated nature and, by experiment, learned to weigh, measure and control whathe calls physical force, he can, by experiment, learn to consciously use and control this forcecalled psychic or spiritual. He is now almostentirely unconscious of it, and it uses him, instinctively as once did electricity. As henow uses one and is master, he can use theother and be MASTER OF, SELF.

Intelligent To learn to do voluntarily andUse. consciously what he is now

doing involuntarily and uncon-sciously-i.e., manifesting life, is now the fieldof human achievement. I predict that whenonce man has found the way, he will have nouse for all the present cumbrous machinerycalled science, nor for much of the presentmechanical or motive powers. Occult mani-festations of the One power will do all thatis now done and more, with less labor, cost offriction, than is possible even with liquid air."Chalk marks don't draw cars," once said arailroad man. But we are much nearer tothe time when some manifestation of force

Page 20: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 21

less tangible than chalk marks will drawcars, than was the possibility of lightningdrawing them when Franklin drew it fromthe clouds, or we then were to the possibilityof wireless telegraphy. Chinese used powderin play centuries before Christian nationsused it to kill; so Hindoo jugglers useoccult forces to-day, but the Anglo-Saxonwill use them in work. I believe the Anglo-Saxon is "the coming man," who will notonly conquer the world, but will also conquerthe near, but unseen, realm of psychic power.

Spirit. As spirit, to be e-du-coed (drawnout, educated) is man in the New

Thought-Man is Spirit with unlimited powerof manifestation. As the recognition ofMan as soul and body has led to the presentdevelopment, until now he finds himselflimited in manifestation by this dual concep-tion of Man and Nature, even so by this ideaof unity of Nature and of Man as Spirit, willhe be freed. He can then manifest withoutlimitation and will thus usher in the newcivilisation waiting just ahead of us.

We are What ALL that has, in this thoughtWe Think, of duality, been affirmed of

Man is false when he is con-sidered in this thought of unity. Facts will

Page 21: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

22 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

not change, but our mental attitudes respect.ing them do change. This will virtuallychange to us all things, for facts are to uswhat we think them to be. This applieseven to the one fact that makes all other factspossible-that one fact is ourselves. We arein manifestation what we think we are. Therefore, if we think we are body and mind,we shall manifest as body and mind; if wethink we are worms of the dust, we shall liveas dust; if we think we are gods (as we are),we shall live as gods. Thus will this thoughtof the universe and of Man as Unity-asSpirit-work a greater revolution in life'smanifestation than was ever wrought beforeby any discovery, invention, or philosophy.

Preparation. HE who would take up thestudy of Man as Spirit must

be willing to lay aside all preconceivedopinions of Man and Nature, forget allscience has said except this thought of unity, for unity is the only fact, except the law, bywhich it manifests,-evolution,-that is ofany practical benefit to him. In this studyof Man, he is to ignore all present thought ofbody, thinking of it as only a manifestationof Spirit-as the materialised clothing ofSpirit. In this thought, all I have said and

Page 22: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 23

may say is true; under the old thought ofduality, all I have said or may say is false. This mental attitude is the one indispensablerequisite. One may obtain facts in thesupposed realm of matter while he is re-pugnant to them; but, in the psychic realm,to recognise facts, one must be receptive, otherwise he is like the blind man seeking tobe convinced of color.

Vibration. To the Soul Culturist allthought of duality of essence

has passed away, as have the myths of themiddle ages, and he recognises only a dualityof manifestation, as Cause and Effect. Tohim in his relation to the Without (theexternal universe), there is only one Cause,-VIBRATION. This vibration is the onlypossible manifestation of Unity. In himself,he knows but one Effect,-SENSATION.Sensation is the only possible manifestationof Unity in him. This manifestation we callLIFE.

Sensation. As the rates of vibration vary,so do the sensations vary. As

the possible number of different vibrations isinfinite, so the possible number of sensationsis infinite. Man, then, is infinite in possibilityhere and now. He has only to develop his

Page 23: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

24 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

power to recognise sensations, and of themany million vibrations that are constantlyimpinging upon him to choose those to whichhe will respond, and those which he willharness to do his work. Emerson's favoritesaying may yet be true in mechanics:"Hitch your wagon to a star." Man willlearn to recognise, to reproduce, and to enjoythose sensations he chooses; and will learnto ignore those which are to him unpleasant. He will thus become his own Fate andDestiny.

The THE New Man will have noNew Man. senses, but he will be sensation.

He will not be limited to fivesenses, but will constantly increase hisrecognition of sensation, and thus becomingmore sensitive, he will, in the ages to come, find himself responsive to every vibration inspace. Then he will know ALL. A text-book on Physics, " up-to-date," now in use inour colleges, gives this definition of heat:"Heat is either a sensation, or that whichproduces a sensation." This is a definitionthat could be given of everything that manfeels and of every feeling. It is true; theauthor told more than he intended. Every-thing external to man " is that which produces

Page 24: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 25

a sensation," and everything within him "is asensation."

Definition THIS is all the definitionby Physics. Physics gives of the pheno-

mena of nature. We can sayof air, water, electricity, light, etc., etc., theyare sensations in man, and they are thatwhich produces these sensations. But, really, the author could have said: "Heat is in mana sensation made by vibrations of a certainwave length and speed." This would alsobe true of everything else. He would haveto go farther yet and give the length andspeed of the wave. This would help theintellect to grasp an idea of heat, but theman knows by feeling what is beyond everypossible definition. Heat is sensation. Thechild knows it by feeling, and the scientistknows no more. Where is the place tostudy heat, in stove or in man? Withoutman, there is no heat. To one under properSuggestion, there is none. Again, the hyp-notic subject under Suggestion is burned toa blister by a cold coin. Where is heat ?We answer,-in sensation. Thought can aswell produce sensation as can those vibra-tions which science recognises, for Thoughtis also a vibration. Now let science reviseher definitions and her conclusions.

Page 25: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

26 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

Finer NOT with the ordinary vibra-Vibrations. tions caught by science does

Soul Culture deal. It dealswith those which science has not yet caught;with those that can burn with cold steel;with those that enable the surgeon to ampu-tate without either anesthesia, or pain, orblood, or inflammation; with those that carrymessages from mind to mind without wireor battery; and with those that enablelovers to enjoy a communion, each witheach, though they are at antipodes. Thesevibrations produce sensations as palpable tothe one able to recognise them as arethose of heat and cold.

All Knowledge THUS is it that all know-Possible. ledge is open to Man, not

by the development of newsenses, but by learning to recognise sensa.tion as all of life to him, and by distinguish-ing those beyond the limit of the five senses. He will thus come to the fulfilment of theprophecy of the Psalmist and have "con-scious dominion over all things." This isnow seen in possibility. It is the object ofSoul Culture to lead Man intelligently tothis,--his own.

Race THE Anglo-Saxon race isSensitiveness. growing more sensitive, and,

as a result, is manifestingpsychic powers to a marked degree. Inspira-tion is poured out in all directions as neverbefore during the historic period. Inven-tion, discovery, research, are in evidence, while literature of all kinds comes in floods, and from pulpit and platform the divineafflatus pours in tremendous streams.Everybody feels able to write or declaim. It is the developing power of man to feelthe finer vibrations, and, though he does notknow the reason and does not understandthe power, yet, as he has instinctivelyobeyed the coarser ones, so is he in-stinctively obeying these. We thus ac-count for the medium, the healer, and thepsychic. It is thus we have our geniusesand our abnormalities, like Blind Tom.They are all acting as aspen leaves act inthe wind, under the finer vibrations ofUnity.

Diseases and BECAUSE of this sensitive-Survival. ness, there is an increase of

disease and diseases, es-pecially nervous diseases. They will increaseuntil we learn how to control these finer

forces. The "struggle for life" has nowbeen transferred to the psychic plane, andthose who cannot live under the intensestrain on the organism, caused by this in-creased sensitiveness, must die off, leavingthe hardier ones to keep up the stock.

Saviors. FOR this reason, there is a demandfrom the race instinct for saviors.

In supplying this demand, they come indroves, each with varying perceptions oftruth. The regular M.D.'s already fear fortheir trade, as it is going before the incom-ing tide of clairvoyants, magnetic healers,"Scientists" of many kinds, and, last of all, before Suggestive Therapeutics. These areall natural results of increased sensitiveness.Nature always balances her manifestations. With the illness, due to increased sensitiveness, relief comes in methods of healing adapted tothat sensitiveness. As bleeding went out withthe hardy pioneer age that could stand it, incame milder systems, and finally these camethat discard medicine. Through use of Na-ture's finer forces, Man is not only healedof disease, but is made positive to unpleasantsensations. " You do not feel the prick of thepin," says the hypnotist. So says the in-telligent healer: "You do not respond now

to the vibrations of pain. As you will notsee that which is unpleasant, or hear thatwhich is discordant, so you will not feel thatwhich is painful. You have within yourcontrol the power of sensation. You can feelonly what you will."

Progress. THE progress of civilisation de-pends now not on the arts and

sciences, not on schools or churches, but onattaining the knowledge and mastery of thesefiner vibrations. These psychic manifesta-tions often produce some disturbance in thebody, 'causing one to depart from ordinarycustoms and manners. This causes somephilosophers to cry, "Degeneracy." Somepeculiar mental conditions cause others tocry, "Insanity is on the increase," or somepeculiarity of conduct causes the cry, " Crimeis on the increase," while the cause is only anincrease of psychic sensitiveness. The raceis, at the close of this cycle, taking anotherstep forward. Could one of the presentcroakers have seen the first eye that blinkedat the sun and died from excess of sensa-tion, but, dying, prophesied the eye of man,he would have said of that individual specimenof the species: "Degenerate." Could themedical professions that now cry " fraud " and

" deterioration " in view of the many "isms "ofto-day, have stood by the first man that madea bow, and seen how, by confinement andlabor, he had changed from the rest ofthe tribe, they would have recommendedchange of climate and said: "The race isgoing physically and morally backward,"when, in fact, it was going ahead, outgrowingthe conservative's sight.

Law. IF some of the present over-anxious and meddling moral re-

formers who, failing to suppress vice and toregulate morals by law, are now trying toprevent the blessings of hypnotism frombecoming known, could have seen primitiveman lay off the skin of the animal hehad worn, they would have exclaimed:" Immoral! The race is becoming too vile tolive." Yet through similar changes has therace passed. The manifestations of Unitythrough humanity are progressive, despiteprognostications of evil and decay. The racewill pass safely through this change frominstinctive action to intelligent andconsciously predetermined action, and thuswill dethrone every "absentee" god andenthrone Unity within. It will defy all lawby being itself Law.

Conduct. IN all these changes the Ego ismanifesting more and more of its

own infinity. The Ego power of perceivingwhat is, gradually reveals Truth to the intellectthrough sensation. "For thoughts," saysEdward Carpenter, " are only dying feelings."When we feel deep enough, that is, when wesuffer enough, we seek the cause and, inseeking, find and grow. Sensations thatcannot be endured are avoided or cured. We learn to choose instinctively thepleasurable and to avoid the opposite. Thisis our only conscious way of deciding whatthe Ego wants. It is equivalent to Spencer'sdictum, " Health-giving acts are pleasurable,"and to Prof. Elmer Gates' discovery that" pleasurable emotions are healthful, and theopposite are poisonous." The Ego, which isa manifestation of Unity, finds by thesensation of pleasure the best way to unfoldits individuality. It is Emerson's wise andcomprehensive advice: "Trust the currentthat knows its way."

Ego Above By noting sensations, we dis-Law. cover regularity and coinci-

dences that we call laws. In-the materialistic worship of this fetish of Law,sight is lost of the greater fact that Spirit

(and therefore the Ego as a part of theundivided Spirit) is itself Law, and henceabove all law.

Practical HERE is a hint of the practicalWork. work of Soul Culture. It works

with manifestation, with thedesign of controlling manifestation. Itrecognises Soul not as something yet to be,or that which is beyond conception, but assomething that now is. It works with Manas Soul. Soul Force, or Spirit, is as thinkable,as real, and as workable as electricity.Affirming as an individual," I am the Spirit,"the Soul Culturist thinks Spirit, and livesSpirit, and manifests consciously the powersof Spirit. He acts that which he affirms, livesthat which he professes, and knows himself asSpirit.

No As Spirit cannot feel pain, or beSickness. sick or die, he knows, as an

individual Spirit, he cannot besick, or have pain or die. These conditionsare to him only manifestations of differentmental attitudes or states of consciousness. They are real to his consciousness if he willthink of them, if he will recognise them, butthey are not real to him as Spirit. Wheneverhe changes his mental attitude and refuses to

recognise them, they do not exist, for he, byrecognition, becomes the creator of theseconditions; they are the effects of his thinking.

Man His Own IT is the same with allCreator of unpleasant conditions calledConditions. sorrow, grief, trouble, worry,

jealousy-- with all thatmakes one unhappy. They are in maneffects of his feeling or thinking. They areproduced in him by Suggestion as similarones are produced in hypnotic subjects.Man is, therefore, his own creator. He canproduce within himself, at will, either pleasantor unpleasant emotions, thus making himself,at will, happy or unhappy, well or sick, wiseor foolish.

Recognition. THE first thing necessary forthe development of this power

is simply for one to recognise himself asSpirit. Jesus, who was spiritually developed, must have meant this when He said, " He thatbelieveth and is baptized is saved," for all thewater of " the river of life" would run off theunbeliever without producing any effect, because, by refusal to recognise the power, itwould not exist for him. Small discharges ofelectricity kill, and extremely great ones arenot felt; even so does this mighty power of

Spirit pass through one constantly unrecog-nised, until sought for; then it is found, as allelse has been found, through recognition ofsensation.

Scientific TinIs is asking of one only thatFaith. same faith which the scientist has

when experimenting. He wouldnot experiment if he did not believe in thepossibility of finding. Give the same readymind to Spirit, and, in that receptivity, theRecognition will come. Once Recognition ts,then all things asked for are possible.

Desire. NEXT to Recognition, is Desire. It is the attitude of true prayer,

"the heart's sincere desire, uttered orunexpressed." In desire, the way is openfor the " current that knows its way" to flowunhampered.

Liberty. LIBERTY of Spirit is thus won.Without this liberty, no spiritual

growth. The last liberty to be won is "theliberty of the sons of God "-the liberty toact as Spirit, independent of all externalconditions. Ignorance and fear have fet-tered and imprisoned the Soul with rites, ceremonies, customs, prejudices, laws, eti-quette, conformity, policy, monetary con-

siderations, social considerations, and hypo-crisy, so that few dare to think their soulsare their own, much less to say so, and, least of all, to live as Soul demands.

Be BUT he who would become de-Thyself. veloped in Spirit, must, above al

other things, be free. " Be thyself,'is the first command of Soul Culture. Hark toits Prophet (Emerson) in his incomparableessay on "Self-Reliance": " Whoso wouldbe a man must be a non-conformist. Nothingat last is sacred but the integrity of yourown mind. Absolve you to yourself, and youshall have the suffrage of the world." Libertyis the way, and the only way, to soulgrowth. It is the way man has evertravelled. There never is a precedent forany progressive step. Freedom never dwellsin old temples. Like the nautilus, she isbuilding herself a new dwelling each succes-sive morn. Freedom is the ever growingstem of the tree of life. Conservatism isher grave, and the grave of all that ismanly. Without liberty, man is dead; aslave lives in his place. If one would gainpower to be Destiny, he must be free.

Effort. THE next demand is Effort. Alleffort here must be spiritual. By

Page 35: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

36 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

physical effort, we can learn in that realmof vibrations termed matter. By intellectualeffort, learn in the intellectual realm. "Butspiritual things must be spiritually dis-cerned." Methods of investigation in otherfields are here of no use. Spiritual phe-nomena (or psychic, whichever term youplease) occupy a field of their own, andmust be found by their own methods. Effortmust therefore be made as Spirit. That is,in Recognition of himself as Spirit, onemust place himself in the mental attitudeof receptivity and desire, and be willing toreceive whatever comes. In this negativeattitude of mind, he waits for the Ego tomanifest as desired.

Non- THE next law is :-Never anta-Resistance. gonise any thing. Never antago-

nise any thing, opinion or con-dition, even in feeling. All is Spirit, therefore A!l is Good. "Nothing but goodcan or does come to me, therefore I willnot antagonise any manifestation, but let itwork in me the good whereunto it wassent. For all the possible evil results willbe those I make by doubting the goodnessof Unity in this manifestation, and, since Iam my own Fate and since I make Fate

by deciding how to receive each manifesta-tion, I decide this is Good, for All is Good.I thus do as he did who first taught meSoul Culture. Resist not evil, but overcomeit in the large affirmation, All is Good. Ithus keep my mind quiet, to perceive andreveal truth. Were I to contend, I wouldnot see clearly, neither would I reveal thetruth, but would conceive much error. Therefore, I will henceforth think onlyGood-will never antagonise." Such mustbe the mental attitude of one who isanxious to lead the spiritual life.

Demonstration. DEMONSTRATION musttake the place of argument.

Therefore the next law of Soul Culture is:-Never argue. "Let your light shine thatmen seeing your good works" shall knowyou are Spirit, shall know you love Truth.Affirm Spirit, and by living as Spirit, demonstrate you are Spirit. You liveSpirit by thinking Spirit and by lettingthat thought control your life. Soul Culturecomes through doing. Here again comesin the thought of the wise Teacher: "Imust be about My Father's business": "MyFather worketh hitherto and I work."" He that doeth the will of My Father, the

same is My mother and sister and brother.""If ye love Me, keep My commandments."He always insisted that through conductspiritual development is demonstrated. Neveronce did He ask, " What do you think ? " or"What do you believe ?"

Self- THE next rule is :-Intend theDirection. mind in the direction in which

you wish revelation. One fa-miliar with the terms of hypnotism will under-stand when I say, control the mind by Auto-Suggestion. From the sub-conscious store-house of all knowledge, the Ego itself, canthus be drawn whatever is desired in the wayof wisdom. The mind can also thus bedirected to the development of psychicfaculties. These faculties take hold oninfinity both of time and space. Nothing is.hidden from Soul perception. All the Soul'spowers are comprised in two, so aptly statedby Emerson thus: " The soul is the perceiverand revealer of truth;" to perceive and toreveal truth being all that the Soul can do,yet, while the method of perception is everone, there are many methods of revelationalready recognised, and there may be manyothers to come in our future unfoldment.Perceptions are revealed merely as truth, or

Page 38: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

they are revealed in terms of time and space. We thus get the names respectively of intuitionand inspiration, to designate the revelations oftruth; of clairvoyance and telepathy, todesignate those of space; of psychometry, todesignate those of time. In practice, theseshade into each other as, in ordinary life, shade the results of the different senses.

Life- THE first manifestation of SpiritHealth. is Life. Therefore, the first func-

tion we come to is health. Allconditions manifesting less than a normalstate of health are those of less health, andnot those of disease. They are the results ofspiritual weakness; for some cause, Spiritdoes not properly manifest through the body. The chief, if not the only difficulty, is theimpediment placed on the manifestation ofSpirit by some false idea. Some affirmationof "Can't," of weakness, or some submissionto conditions through belief in heredity or inthe impossibility of relief, is the cause of illhealth. There is no "let" to "the currentthat knows its way." Therefore, the first careof the Soul Culturist is "to let" his Spirithave its way in health. This is easy. Onlylet the body alone; keep the mind off of itand expect it to be kept by the maker-Spirit

- well. He is to think and affirm onlyHealth.

Spiritual WE have a number of recognisedGifts. psychic powers--"spiritual gifts "-

but I wish to add a few that arenot generally so recognised. The first isMusic, the highest and purest expression ofsoul. All art is purely spiritual; and thepurer the art, the nearer to pure Spirit. Themore any attempt in art is removed fromall considerations of life, except love for theart itself--removed from monetary considera-tions, from precedent, morality, etc.-thepurer the art and the more perfect themanifestation of Spirit. Wagner is creditedwith the insight of saying: " If we had reallife, we should need no art." The love of thebeautiful is the test of spiritual unfoldment.Beauty is Divinity. Hence all the fine artsare psychic in origin. Poetry is epecially apsychic gift. It is the child of beauty andmelody. Hence, from oracle to seance, wehave the improvisatrice, and all men in theirnatural state and all children are poets.

Classificationof PsychicPower.

THUS a classification of thepsychic faculties which it isthe province of Soul Cultureto develop will include Music,

Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, LandscapeGardening, Rhetoric, Poetry, Health, Inspira-tion, Intuition, Clairvoyance, Telepathy,Prophecy and Psychometry. We here have afield comprising all there is in life worth livingfor, all there is to reward one for living, excepting the one thing that is above allothers, and above all classification, for that onething is the very highest manifestation of Life;it is the Everlasting Life, the pure life of theSpirit, dimly shining through the mists oferror; it is-LOVE.

Love. LOVE is the first and last ex-pression of Spirit. Love is its

highest and purest expression. It is thehighest of which the intellect can conceive. It is ever the controlling force in life. Eachindividual is controlled by his loves; there isno progress for him in any line until his loveis moved in that direction; he then moveswithout solicitation. All spiritual develop-ment is made manifest through love. It isthe barometer of life recording in manifesta-tion the progress of the soul's unfoldment,Love is all Paul declared it to be when he said:"The greatest of these is Love." It is allJesus declared when He gave the newcommandment, "Love one another," thus

Page 41: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

42 HOW TO CONTROL FATE.

making it the one condition to spiritual life.It is all He meant when He said, "God isLove." To present human thought, Love isthe highest known or possible manifestationof power. It represents to us the most bene-ficent as well as the controlling force of theuniverse within man, and, since it is such, itmust be his God. It is the holiest as well asthe most powerful of emotions. It is everpresent, and is the force out of which all therest come. Thought is Love reduced inpotential and pitch.

Ultimate THE Soul Culturist, therefore,Power. must deal with Love as his ulti-

mate power, just as the electriciandeals with his ultimate power. He does thisby methods as rational. Recognising it asthe one force, the one manifestation of Unity,he seeks in Love alone to unfold his psychicpowers.

Speed of THE intensity of the vibrationsVibration. of Light has been measured, but

not those of magnetism, for theyare too swift for any conception of time toenter into the calculation of them. Thoughtis swifter than magnetism by multipliedvibration, but Love is many times the multi-plied vibrations of Thought. Love can be

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 43

studied by its manifestations in sensation, assound and light are studied and known.

Love's Pitch LIKE all other forms in whichand Octaves. Unity manifests through vi-

bration, Love has its pitchand its octaves and, somewhere in the infinitescale, each human life is placed. The onlypossible development of any life is to raise orlower its pitch, to increase or diminish itspotential. How to do this, and how totransform Love to Thought in obedience tothe mechanical Law of Conservation ofEnergy, is the secret the Sphinx of Timeshall yet reveal.

Love of THERE is one ever-present starting-Truth. point in Soul Culture-Love of

Truth. This Love, it must not beforgotten, is power; as real power as is steamin the boiler. It is the power that manifestsin the development of those faculties wedesire. Love must be thought of as Force, must be held in our consciousness as Forcejust as the electrician in the power-households, in his consciousness, Force as histhought of electricity. Love of Truth is ourinitial point. Love of Truth is the power withwhich we work. "God will not manifestHimself to cowards," says Emerson; He

Page 43: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

44 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

cannot, if He would, manifest in liars, hypocrites and slaves. Only to the extentthat one is truthful, brave, honest and loving, has he any independent spiritual life. Allthat he may seem to have is but the raceaccumulation for which he has no responsi-bility, and hence in which he has no realpossession; he is but using the race andanimal instinct instead of being, as heshould be, an independent, self-controlledindividual. To the extent that men manifestlove, they are spiritual. As far as theycontrol their love through desire for truth andgoodness, they are human, are out-growingthe tiger in them and leaving the remnants ofthe ape behind.

Safety. IN this love of truth alone is it safeto seek psychic unfoldment. To

seek in any other love, is to fall into whatthe occultists call "black magic," which isthe development of power without know-ledge or guidance; is putting power intoanimal, into undeveloped man. This, likeall undirected or wrongly directed power, injures temporarily the individual. Theultimate result-unfoldment-is, however, thesame; but this road leads through, it maybe, centuries of suffering. To seek in any

Page 44: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 45

other than love of truth, is to repeat thescandals, the sufferings, failures, and compli-cated work of the Christian sects and ofmedium-ship; or to sink into the intellectualfollies of sectarian "Christian Scientists," whohave abandoned love of truth for love of acertain expression of truth and for "afounder" of a sect. Love of truth, pure andsimple, is liberty; and, without liberty, noindependent life, no living Truth.

The Law. To seek in love of money, power, fame, or any lesser motive

than love of Goodness and Truth, is to invitesuffering and development through suffering. It is to "sow corruption" that one may reapthe same. The law is: "Seek ye first thekingdom of Good and its right living, then allspiritual growth shall be added unto you."There is no limit to human manifestationwhen once, by this means, the way is ope. edOne thus becomes an Enlightened man. Helives in " the light that lighteth every man thatcometh into the world." The light is inhimself. He lives neither by the borrowedlight of his neighbors, nor of his century.

Concentration. IN this Love-of-Truth, letone concentrate all his

thoughts and desires for a time each day. In

Page 45: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

46 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

that concentrated state of mind, "let " the soulbe heard. After you have, by desire andexpectancy, given it direction, "let" it haveits way. In hypnotic terms, after you havegiven yourself command by Auto-Suggestion,let the sub-conscious part of your being haveits expression. All knowledge and power areeither latent in the soul or lie behind the soul, ready, on opportunity, to flow into expressionand, whenever they are " let," they flow. Thiscondition of "letting" is that of naturalsomnambulance; of the artificial somnam-bulance of hypnotism; that of the " Scientist "when "In the Silence;" of the Hindoo inmeditation; of the crystal gazer and the cardreader. It is concentration. The thing uponwhich the gaze is concentrated, or whetheror not there be anything, is unimportant. The mental state is all.

Involuntary THIS is identical with thatConcentration. natural condition of in-

voluntary concentration inwhich the bookkeeper calculates in midstof noise, the editor writes and the mechanicworks. The one does it on compulsion ofnecessity till it becomes habit, the other doesit with a pre-determined purpose and at will.Such concentration is the key to success in

every direction ; its opposite-diffusion-is thecause of all failure, be it failure in health, business or love. It is the key to all occultand ancient mysteries.

Practice. ONE must, therefore, practiceconcentration until it becomes not

merely habit, but a new instinct. One mustlearn to rise above the life of sense, to ignorethe coarser vibrations and the sensations thatarise from them, known as the five senses, andto live in the finer sensations. That thehypnotic subject does this and opens the doorto the storehouse of the sub-conscious,demonstrates that every person, by the sameprocess of Suggestion, can do the same. InSoul Culture, we are seeking to give liberty ofexpression to whatever latent knowledge theconscious Ego may desire and determine. The fundamental affirmation, I am Spirit, means, I am all that Spirit is. The SoulCulturist affirms :-Since Spirit is Truth, Love,Power, Wisdom-I am Truth, Love, Power, and Wisdom. I am any other possiblemanifestation that Spirit is. Spirit is all thisin potentiality; I may be all this in manifesta-tion. I am part of indivisible Spirit in SpiritI am an individual manifestation of Spirit inSpirit. Even as an electric spark can say:

Even so,hoping at least to see that which the externaleye cannot see, let him who would see, look;and, in due time, he shall say with the poet-artist, William Blake: " I assert that I do notbehold the outward creation, and that it is tome a hindrance and not an action. And more-suchan one shall see, as John saw, the spiritualcity, not " coming down from heaven," but allabout him, in the midst of which he lives, ashe lives in this cruder city of the senses; thatis, he lives in the spiritual, as he lives in thesense life, by sensation alone. He will havelearned to recognise those finer sensations

INTRODUCTION TO PART II

FROM the Philosophy we now turn to thePrinciple of Expression. From Science ofLife we turn to the "Art of Living." From" Preaching" we turn to "Practice," remem-bering that he who cannot "preach betterthan he practices" will never unfold. Forthe Ideal, which is the Real of the Soul, must necessarily precede all unfoldment.

That we live is no evidence that we arenow artists. That our lives are not what wedesire is evidence that we are poor workmenand that we have not learned to be artisanseven. We are bunglers. Disease, failureand unhappiness are evidences of the ig-norant and bungling nature of our work.Since Life is power and Art, either useful orbeautiful, is but the application of powerunder intelligent direction; we can make lifean Art only by intelligently directing the onepower by which Life is directed. Thatpower is Thought. To think as we wish tobe, is to BE that which we wish to be. Such

thinking comes to him who knows the originof his thought. He chooses only thosethoughts which cause health, happiness andprosperity. Our thoughts are caused bySuggestion. To know what Suggestion toaccept and thus make into an Affirmation, and what Suggestion to ignore, is to controllife's expression-is to be Masters of Fate.

This is taught in Part II. It is recom-mended that this part be studied until itbecomes as familiar as the alphabet. Theprinciples will then be lived. The studentwill thus become an adept in the mystery oflife and an Artist in living.

SUGGESTION: ITS PLACE ANDPOWER

Definition. SUGGESTION, in ordinary speech, means anything addressed to the

senses, anything that causes an idea in themind. Thus each individual thing in one'senvironment is, at all times, a Suggestion.A Suggestion is whatever from withoutawakens a thought, whatever " sets a man tothinking." It is thus an ever-present factor inlife; and, in this respect, it is true that"Suggestion rules the world." But, to rule, the Suggestion must be taken by the mind astruth. It is then converted into Auto-Suggestion.

Auto- THIS is a Suggestion given bySuggestion. the individual to himself; it is

born of conviction of truth. Each individual is controlled by his convic-tions, that is, by Auto-Suggestion-by his

Page 53: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

54 HOW TO CONTROL FATE.

Affirmations. In this view, it is not Sugges-tion but Auto-Suggestion-Affirmation-thatrules the world; however, in common thought, this cause and effect-Suggestion and Affirma-tion-are one. Therefore, it is near enoughin fact to say, "Suggestion rules the world,"for, until man learns to give himself Sugges-tions independent of external condition,Suggestion is the primal manifestation ofpower. When he reaches that plane of de-velopment where he is controlled by Affirma-tion, he becomes, through this power ofAffirmation, the creator of his own destiny.

Technical BUT, while this is the meaningDefinition. of Suggestion in ordinary speech,

there is a technical use of theword. Suggestion, as used by mental scien-tists, suggestionists, and hypnotists, meansan intelligent use of this ever-present powerwith a predetermined purpose to create acertain idea in another's mind. It is intelli-gent use of Suggestion to cause a person tothink and to act from a chosen thought.Like all other arts, it is the intelligent use ofpower. The Art of Suggestion is the greatestof all arts, and, as a consequence, is the onemost potent for good.

Control of CIVILISATION is but ideas ma-Evolution. terialised. Thoughts control

life. While they are not things, they are power; thus they are the creator ofall things. The thought in mind of warrior, statesman, artist, becomes the victory, thestate, the statute. As thoughts change, sodoes all external life change; all progress, allreform, began in the change of thought insome one individual. Heretofore this changehas been, as in savage man, merely instinctive;but, as man, by conscious thought, has becomea factor in changing the world into betterconditions; as he has at will changed grass towheat, and scrub to blooded stock, so is henow becoming a conscious factor in his ownevolution. He is beginning to realise thatthe only power by which he has wrought hasbeen that of Thought. He is learning thatThought is as easily controlled and made todo selected work as is steam or electricity. He has only to think rightly to have what-ever he wishes, either in person or in environ-ment.

"In His " As a man thinketh in his heart,Heart." so is he," said the ancient prophet.

The key to this Affirmation is thewords, "in his heart." Interpreted, it reads:

Page 55: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

56 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

"Profound convictions control the life." Inscientific terms, it is this: " Man is controlledby Affirmation." Therefore, to make life'sexpression what we wish, we are to holdour wish as to a reality, a profound convic-tion; it will then materialise. Life is as easilymoulded into desired forms as clay by thepotter. Clay takes the shape of the thoughtin the mind. The child's body at birth ismoulded by the mother's thought; he followsthe evolution of that thought until he beginsto think for himself; then he begins toreshape his body; and somewhat consciously, but to a greater degree unconsciously, he isdoing this every moment of time. When heshall understand his power, he will shapebody and environment at will to his desires.

Disease, THUS by Suggestion man to-day,Thought without intention, builds his bodyCreated. into disease, old age, weakness,

pain and death; builds his en-vironment into poverty and squalor; hismental conditions of unhappiness and sorrowhave materialised. When he shall never holdthese ideas of bodily decay, of pain, orpoverty, but in their stead will hold "in hisheart" ideals of youth, health, vigor andplenty, there will be to him no more of life's

ills. He will have, instead, realisation ofthese beautiful ideals.

Place of THIS is the place and the powerSuggestion. of Suggestion in the New

Thought. This Art places inthe control of man his fate by teaching himhow to think. It demonstrates that by rightthinking man may be now that which attimes he dreams of being-ever youthful, healthful, happy and free from care. This ispossible for all. The Art is as easily-taughtas is the use of the magnet. Many livesdemonstrate it now. Would you know thelaw ? Here it is: Never think a thing that

you do not wish to materialise as a fact. Iwill put it in another way: Suggest toyourself that that is true which you desire tobe true. "Believe and be saved," was thecommand of Jesus; believe that to be truewhich you wish to be true, and it will manifestin your life as truth.

the idea of plenty to use, to enjoy, not tohoard, not to oppress, but to bless, and itwill as surely come as rose from bud. This is the power of the Christian Scientist, the Divine Scientist, the Mental Scientist, the Soul Culturist, the Hypnotist, theSuggestionist; they all use the power ofSuggestion and Affirmation, each more orless understandingly. It is the power ofpriest, politician, street fakir, auctioneer; ofteacher, doctor, and reformer. All of theseuse it instinctively, for it is all the powerman has-the power of Thought.

Affirmation. THE technical word in evi-dence here is AFFIRMATION.

Affirm that which you wish and it willmanifest in your life. Learn a lesson fromthe hypnotist. He says to the subject:"You cannot get up." He repeats it untilthe subject, because he accepts it as truth, cannot get up. He says: "You have atoothache," and repeats it until the painlessjaw really aches. So do we say to our-selves: "I am sick, poor, old, unhappy, weak, penniless," until we make ourselvesso. Now turn about; "repent" and affirmthe opposite. Say, "I am rich, happy, healthy," until you find life changing its

aspects. It will change when you say thisfrom conviction. Realise that as Mind (orSpirit) you are now potentially all youdesire. It lies in you, waiting expression. For what one man is, all men are. If onemanifests as health, happiness and wealth, all men can. Let that power which is lifein you manifest your desire. By Affirma-tion, direct the life-flow your way.

All is ONE affirmation contains all thatGood. is necessary for a perfect life. It

is this: ALL IS GOOD. This isfaith in the Providence of the Universe, faith in the intelligence and wisdom of thatAlmighty Power that out of Itself said,"Let there be light," and there was light. The All-Power is good. All manifestationscome from It, therefore all are good. Allis Good, used as an Affirmation, becomesreality-redeems the individual from all ills.

Power of WITH this understanding ofChoice. Suggestion as an ever-present

factor in life, goes also theunderstanding that, whenever one has at-tained power to select Suggestions and toreject those he does not wish, he has at-tained the power of controlling his thought. To control thought, is to be the Conscious

Creator of Destiny !-to be the Master ofFate. So great is the fact that it requiresdesire, time and repetition before it can berealised in the daily manifestations of life. Therefore this principle of Suggestion isfurther unfolded.

How to REMEMBER, a Suggestion isSuggest. whatever is used intelligently

to induce a desired mentalcondition in another mind. An Affirmationis a Suggestion accepted and made Truth.A statement of Truth in the indicativemood, present tense, is the controlling powerin the individual life. We have here abasis from which to begin the work ofassuming conscious control of life and ofmoulding its expression to our will. Realis-ing that life has heretofore been controlledfrom without-that is, that we haveAffirmed because Suggestions were accepted, that we have not heretofore thought of achoice in Suggestions we have accepted-we are ready to learn that we can suggestto ourselves; that Affirmations arising fromdesire can be voluntarily used. TheseAffirmations will control the expression oflife.

THROUGH SUGGESTION.

The Great ALL the power of SuggestionLaw. is multiplied many fold when

it becomes Affirmation bornfrom desire. The Master in Life will use,as the power to control the Sub-conscious inits expression, Affirmations born in Desire.THAT WHICH HE WISHES TO BE, HE WILL

AFFIRM THAT HE IS. This is the GreatLaw-the most important law man has yetdiscovered. By obeying this Law he willcontrol his life; will make the channel for"the current that knows its way." Thereis one mighty factor to use in this control:WILL. Grapple to this Affirmation-I AM-with the WILL. With this grapplethere is no failure. Every Affirmationplaced in charge of the Will and let alonewill find expression, will be realised. Whenthis is understood, when the beauty andnecessity of Affirmation is seen, then theplace and purpose of my monthly journal-NOW-will be appreciated. No matterwhat the culture, position, means or ex-ternal condition may be, they are valuelessin the life and are enslaving conditionsuntil, by conscious Affirmation through Will, they are used as the means of Soul-growth-the means to self-mastery.

Morgan. J. PIERPONT MORGAN is notmaster of self, though he is

almost master of all earth's transportation, for he is liable to awaken any morning ill;to find himself paralyzed; to become de-mented; to find fire, flood, famine or warhas reduced him to beggary. He can dieby disease, bullet or starvation. The pooresttramp may outlive him, may be happierand may die richer. He has not conqueredFate, and will not until he realises that allthese things, the insignia of earthly power, are of no value to the Soul, which haspower to create, to call at will all it needs;until he has passed beyond the necessity ofdisease and sorrow, and even holds deathat bay; and until he has learned that hecan at will change these manifestations ofcrude vibrations of flesh for the finer onesof Spirit.

The Law AND yet Truth is so simple,of Life. the Mastery so easily acquired.

A child may learn it. It islaid down in this simple Law of Life:A iirm that which you desire to be as apresent reality. Live as if it were alreadymanifest and you shall find it manifest. Imust repeat here that Truth Affirmed isthe controller of life. Affirmations are the

within side of Truth. No perception ofTruth ever meant so much for mankind asthis LAW. It means that all man everdreamed is within his reach. He has totake it by Affirmation only. The line ofevolution in man is toward Self-Control-Conscious direction of the manifestationsof life. The animal is fast being outgrown, and MAN is coming into expression.

From Within CONTROLLED in some form,or Without. life must be. If not from

Within, then from Without. The question I now place before you isthis: Which shall it be? Will you be Self-Controlled, or be the tool, the play, the slaveof circumstances ? To control railroads, tele-graphs, labor, capital, armies, is to control, the Without. It is not to control SELF.The person who controls these is himselfcontrolled by them; is the slave of circum-stances. The Without-Law of Suggestionis Absolute in sway where the Within-Lawof Affirmation is not invoked intelligentlyand consciously. No matter what or wherewe are, we act under Thought. As longas we obey without choice Thought bornof Suggestion, we are slaves of the With-out. When that Thought is self-chosen,

Page 63: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

then God has assumed the throne inHis Kingdom, the Within, and His edictsare Affirmations. Absolutely He reigns. His edicts are never disobeyed. They areinstantly executed. "God said, Let therebe light, and there WAS light." No timebetween command and execution-no timebetween cause and effect.

Man is THIS development reached, MANComing. has come; the HUMAN is here;

the animal, the instinctive, theautomatic, has died out. MAN is hereand all things are subject to him. Thispower of choice in Suggestion is the divid-ing line between man and brute. As soonas an individual makes a conscious choice,he has crossed the dividing line and is onthe road to manhood. When that power ofchoice has developed so that he choosesevery expression of his life and all circum-stances obey his will, then, and not tillthen, has he arrived at MAN'S estate.MAN is coming. MAN IS HERE, when-ever one realises his power to choose, hispower to BE!

his pupil. This control may be early won inlife. Suggestion does not determine charac-ter; but through Suggestion, character maybe developed and moulded into Selfhood. ASuggestion once accepted becomes an Affirma-tion. The individual then manifests, not asany person or persons may desire, butaccording to his inherent character. As allforce acts in accordance to the instrumentwithin which it is confined, so thought, beingforce, will act according to the instrumentalitythrough which it manifests. Character is, inSuggestion, a permanent factor, changingonly as the unfolding Soul-the I Am-shallchange it. To illustrate: While this essaywas in progress a friend invited me to attendthe theatre. I had not thought of going, wasnot conscious of any desire to go. But theSuggestion aroused the desire. I consentedand went. The power of Suggestion ceasedwhen I said," Yes." I went in my thought, acted in my way and enjoyed in my way.My individuality determined how the Sugges-tion should affect me after I had exercisedmy choice and said, "Yes."

To attain Mastery, or to assistanother so to attain, insist at all times uponpersonal responsibility for conduct. Allpersons have the power to choose, and bychoice, they DO control their life. Now leteach bear the effects of that choice and, byexperience, learn to choose wisely. Neveraffirm that you are not responsible, wouldyou achieve success in any undertaking. Toyou alone belongs the victory. Defeat isimpossible, for all experience is victory.Wisdom is the guerdon of all struggle. Thus is the knowledge of Suggestion andAffirmation the knowledge above all otherknowledge. It is the wisdom that makes allother knowledge of use. It is the only real, practical knowledge. It is the wisdom o.fwise choice and action.

Praise, etc. No Suggestion acts againstone's desire and will. One

which awakens opposition produces an effectopposite to that desired. Instinctively under-standing this, and acting upon the principlethat each one is ready to be helped the wayhe desires to go, that each one is willing toaccept happiness and success, the world hasfound praise, adulation, flattery, insignia, social distinctions, to be power. The wiseman will use all power, and to understandPower and how to use it as Suggestion, is towin success.

Fear. SUGGESTIONS born of duty, neces-sity and fear, control most lives.

When one becomes unfolded, Love will giveall the Suggestions. "Love is the fulfilmentof the law." Fear is the "Father of Lies,"of all ills and evils. "From all Fear, GoodLord, deliver us," should be in the Litany. To be free from Suggestions born of fear,is to be free from illness, failure, poverty andsorrow. These Suggestions should be ig-

No Power THERE is no power Without toto Harm. harm. All power is lodged

Within, where God's kingdomIS. Whatever is not in harmony withTruth is non-existent, hence has no power.Truth at all times is Power and is entirelyGOOD. Therefore "Fear no evil." Liesand slanders have no power; for they aredevoid of Truth. Pay no attention tothem. To attend to them even by somuch as thought or wish, is to put powerinto them. The harm comes from Within, not from the lie. Soon you will come tosee that no one has power to harm youbut yourself. A lie harms the teller. Sois it with all the evil we would do toanother. In settling with a business manrecently, he remarked: "Since you havekept no account, are you not afraid thatI have cheated you ?" "You cannot," wasmy reply. "You can only cheat yourself.Every dollar that you take dishonestly willreduce your power in business, destroy yourhappiness and injure your health. You

No matter ifthis be denied, he who has studied Sug-gestion knows that T. J. Shelton, Mrs. HelenWilmans, Mrs. Eddy and all the rest useSuggestion. Not to use it, they must becomenon-existent. What other subtle forcesthere may be-and I think they are infiniteas are the possible number of vibrations-yet the director of these forces is Suggestion. But for this power of Suggestion they wouldnever have a patient. TheSuggestion may be conveyed in a thousandways. Look, attitude, speech, anything ad-dressed to the Ego through any of the fivesenses, or through any possible channel, isa Suggestion. Hence Telepathy is a mostpotent channel, because it arouses noopposition in the conscious life. Telepathyis the Power in absent treatments. Fear. FEAR being the cause of all ills, failures and unhappiness, it is the

first condition to be outgrown. To outgrowfear, learn how to Affirm Fearlessness. Letthe thought used be this in any form ofwords you may choose to put it: "I amfearless. I dare to do anything I desire."Whenever anything comes to cause a thoughtof fear, make this affirmation. Then do inmind that which you fear, and act it in theexternal when it is possible. Conquer fearby Affirmation and prove you have con-quered by doing the thing feared. There isnot an Affirmation that brings health andhappiness sooner than this: - I AMFEARLESS!

Health. FOR health, do not recognisedisease in your thought. To

think upon disease, to brood upon it, is toinvite it-is to suggest it upon yourself. Therefore, think only of Health. Ignoredisease in thought; think health. Let theAffirmation be something like this:--"Iam Life. I am Spirit. I am Mind. AsLife, I cannot know sickness. As Life, I amat all times well. As Spirit, I am well.Spirit cannot be sick. I am a perfectmanifestation of Spirit. Perfection is health,

I live and movein this thought of Unity, and manifest eachday my oneness in health. I am HealthtI am Peace! I am Joy!" Make theseAffirmations and forget that you have madethem by living them. Be, in expression, that which you Affirm. Life flows asnaturally and as harmoniously as sunlight.Affirm ! Forget ! and let it flow.

-discouragements come, affirm Success. De-clare yourself Prosperous. Let no thoughtof discouragement come into your mind.Affirm: "All is Mine. From the ALL each, day comes to me that which I need."

SUPPLEMENT TO FIFTH EDITION

TO MY READERS, GREETING:-

THIS book is my first. We called it "Mybaby" for a year. It has sold, to oursurprise, and taken my name all aroundthe world. It has received praise and com-mendation wherever the English languageis read. From none have I received finerappreciation than from several HinduSwamis. An Arab teacher of occultismwhen reading it at the request of O HashnuHara, editor of "The English Magazine ofMysteries," replied when she asked hisopinion of it: "That man knows!" To betried by a jury of his peers is the desire ofevery author. I know by the only testpossible the truth of that which I have herewritten. It is the test which I have recom-mended you in this book to use, i.e.,DEMONSTRATION. "Learn to do bydoing," is the only true method of education.I have demonstrated the thought of thisbook to be TRUTH by living it.

Page 75: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

76 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

It is not possible to estimate how muchthis book has done to awaken an interestin Suggestion. But I know by manyletters that it has been a factor in theworld's evolution along the line awakeningthe consciousness of the Human Soul to arealisation of itself as a manifestation ofOmnipotence. It has brought many to arational understanding of an intelligentapplication of this most important Law ofLife, which is also the only Law of humancontrol-The -Law of Suggestion.

When this book was first published therewas far more confusion in the thought ofSuggestion, even among teachers, than atpresent. The subject was shunned even byNew Thought teachers generally, and wasmuch muddled in the teaching of manyand feared by others. Now it is a commonword, well understood by all leadingexponents of the various cults.

My magazine, then in its Second Volume, was fearless in its annunciation of this Law,on its positive side known as AFFIRMATION.Instructions and formulas for denials werethen common. Now they are the excep-tion. The Law of Suggestion is now sowell understood that few teachers advocatenegative propositions. Affirmation is Auto-

Page 76: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 77

Suggestion, and whatever I suggest to my-self, that I am.

Students are coming to understand thatthis Law of Suggestion lies at the baseof occultism, both ancient and modern. Itunderlies Spiritualism and what are termedSuggestive Therapeutics and Magnetic heal-ing; it is the life there is in Osteopathy,"Christian," "Divine" and "Mental" Science, and in the various systems of health treat-ments now attracting attention. Could sug-gestion be removed from any system oftheology or medicine, it would fail. Authorsupon reform, and even those writing uponbusiness success, are realising the value ofa knowledge of Suggestion.

For these reasons this little book fills aplace among the more pretentious ones, since it brings the Law home to theindividual; teaching him through its con-scious and intelligent use how to controlhis fate and make his destiny to his will.

My co-labourers and myself are fastlearning to direct our lives by Affirmation. We are realising our power through MentalPictures, through the Ideal, to direct ourlife. We are learning when we have madethese pictures, to hold to them, and LETthe Universal Life materialise them. We

Page 77: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

78 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

can build through Affirmation only. Hewho so consciously builds, builds to hiswill. This fact is one this book forces uponthe consciousness of its readers. So manywrite me: "You have taught me that ICAN." I would, therefore, have this thoughtgo with you as you lay it down: I HAVEPOWER TO MOULD MY LIFE TO MY WILL. IMOULD IT THROUGH THE LAW OF SUGGES-

TION. I AFFIRM AND BECOME THAT WHICH

I AFFIRM.

When this book was written I had butrecently begun my work in San Francisco, not dreaming what its evolution has been, and I was wholly unacquainted with thework of authorship and of publishing. Ihad obeyed the promptings of my Soul,my intuitions in settling here; I had obeyedthem in writing and later in printing thebook. Unexpected assistance opened theway to its publication. I started my maga-zine through the same faith, in Truth as Iheard it in the inner consciousness. Twoyoung men had joined me and with thepublication of this we formed the nucleusof what has grown to be "NOW" Folk.We are now an incorporated companywith a fair prospect of seeing my MentalPicture materialise:--my Ideal Mountain

Page 78: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 79

Home founded with hotel, sanitarium, schools, printing plant and various industrieswhere mutual lovers work for mutual good,in love of their work. This Ideal ismaterialising. I have held it as a realityfor ten years; as a dream for twenty-fiveyears. It comes now in accordance withthe Law of Expression, which is the Lawby which all Ideals materialise. Ideals findobjective expression according to the fidelitywith which they are held as presentrealities. "According to thy faith" is notlimited to improving bodily conditions, butcovers the whole range of human experience;war and peace, business and home, loveand duty, politics and religion, marriageand divorce, birth and death, are all con-trolled by this Law of Ideal Suggestion-THAT WHICII I THINK, TIAT I AM!

Realising this power of Thought, I hadwritten before this book, the articles nowcomposing "MAN'S GREATEST DISCOVERY,"which I consider my most important bookthus far, as it deals with the Power andthe Principle of Individual Life. Uponthis fact THOUGHT IS POWER ....all future science, philosophy and art willbe based. From the knowledge of thisfact all my works have originated andupon it all my instruction is based.

Page 79: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

So HOW TO CONTROL FATE

Through faith in our power, through rightthinking, to create, are the plans of"NOW" Folk materializing. Thought willhereafter build that Home, Sanitarium andSchools, and whatever else we desire, be-cause we affirm I HAVE POWER TO BUILDMY LIFE TO MY DESIRE. Daily are welearning where that POWER lies; daily learn-ing how to direct it. But it is not ourthought alone that will do this; we arereinforced by every thought our readerssend us, be it for or against us, it makesno difference. The windmill uses everybreeze, no matter from whence it comes. All power manifests in accordance with theinstrument it uses. So Thought, beingPower, when it comes to us from without,is used by our Mental attitude, and sincewe hold to nothing but Good, all powermust manifest goodness for us. Therefore, all who think of us help us in any wayin our work for Truth through Love ofTruth.

Realizing the power of Thought to con-trol external conditions, and the power ofSuggestion to overcome conditions, I wrotemy "Dollars Want Me," a brochure asrevolutionary in its thought as in its title."I want dollars" is the ordinary cry. "I

Page 80: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

WANT i" is humanity's cry, instead of being,as it should be, "I POSSESS! " Affirmingpossession, we enter into the realization ofpossession. Without this realization we maybe poor with millions in our hands. "Heis poor who thinks himself poor!" saysEmerson. I can imagine no greater goodI can do my fellows than to enable themto replace poverty thoughts and pictureswith those of opulence. I wrote for thisI say in my "Introduction" "To help youto rise above the drudgery of ENFORCEDlabour!" I believe in freedom and in freemen. Necessity is as much a Master asthe slave-driver with a whip. I have theconsciousness of knowing that the mereSuggestion "Dollars Want Me! " has changedthe conditions of hundreds of its readers.I would like this little book to be scatteredas a tract, for there could be no moreeffective arbitrator between capital andlabour; no more humanizer for the selfishand idle; no more stimulating thought tothe weary rich than is the thought it bears:WEALTH IS FOR ENJOYMENT THROUGH

USE.

It is becomingcommon for the idle, the foolish, the weakand the vicious to use "Hypnotism" as ascapegoat, and to excuse themselves bysaying: "I was hypnotised!" when everyexpert in Suggestion knows that characterdetermines the reception or rejection of aSuggestion; that where it is used as anexcuse it is a case of lack of self-reliance,a case always of self-hypnotism. No greaterevil is possible than that teaching whichlessens personal responsibility for conduct. The weak and vicious are ever seeking anexcuse for that which they alone are re-sponsible. Because of this, theories of pre-destination, heredity, karma, circumstance, influence, spirits, devil, or hypnotism arecreated and used as an excuse. Excuse isone of the most poisonous of thoughts, forit undermines character, weakens the powersof resistance, lessens faith in self and incul-cates a belief in what is worse than ancientdemonism by locating power in things out-side the Soul. There is but one surefoundation for individual and for nationalintegrity, but one sure foundation for cha-racter, and that is SELF-RELIANCE.Self-reliance must find its rise in Self-knowledge and Self-respect. For this

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 83

reason I feel that I am in my work prac-ticalizing America's greatest essay, Emer-son's "Self-Reliance." All my writingsare pitched to the one keynote-BETHYSELF i

The object of this book, and all my books, magazines and lessons is to assist others infinding themselves, for each is Power toovercome all conditions and circumstances, and the Power with each is directed in theWill. This Will is trained and directedonly through faith in self. "I Can" is theAffirmation of Character, Health andHappiness. Self-assertion its one name.

Through the success of these books Ibecame aware of the world-wide interestnow manifested in New Thought, and feltthat this stream needed guiding and clarify-ing. Therefore I wrote my "New ThoughtPrimer: Origin, History and Principles ofthe Movement." This book is also a childof " How to Control Fate," for my purposewas, as much as anything, to bring to theintelligent the thought this movement wasalso Evolution, and that human unfoldmenthad ever been controlled by the Law ofSuggestion.

There is no creation. Progress is but thecoming into expression of that which

Page 83: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

84 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

eternally has been. New movements arisein a conception which is but an extensionof a previous conception, and that of aprevious conception, and so on back toprimitive man, of a divine, infinite andeternal idea, which finds expression throughhuman ideals. These ideals become incor-porated into institutions, and a civilizationwhich later ideals modify. Thus externalconditions are but the materialization ofThoughts born in Suggestions. So aroseNew Thought. From previous glimpses ofTruth we have now grown to a larger vision.

In like manner came the philosophy andthe art of Suggestion. It began in Mes-merism, came up through "Animal Magne-tism" and other forms of using Thoughtconsciously to control conduct, until thediscovery was made that Thought was theonly power used, and that it was one's ownthought within himself that did the work inhim.

Suggestion lies solely in the individual'spower to think and power to choose whatto think. From its conscious use in con-trolling conduct and curing bodily in-firmities we have learned that it is equallypowerful in changing material conditionsand in creating environment to desire.

Page 84: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 85

Thus my six books have arisen. Theyare the evolution of the one idea:THOUGHT IS POWER AND CAN BE IN-

TELLIGENTLY DIRECTED TO THE CREATION

OF ONE'S OWN SELF AND ENVIRONMENT

Had this first book, "My Baby," notbeen received, the rest would not havebeen. This opened the way for theseothers, and those which are yet to follow. In its effect upon author and publishers itdemonstrated the truth of the principle ittaught. It has been also a material help incarrying on our work, for it used to cometo us that they might assist in the work.

The theme is not exhausted. In dealingwith Thought we are dealing with themightiest Power subject to Human control. In dealing with the Soul we are dealingwith Infinity and Eternity. The growingconsciousness of Power will be an eternalunfoldment. The evolution of an idea isendless. Every day a new book is neededto record the increased perception of thisidea of Thought as Power. I have manynew ones as ideals in my mind and I willprint them as soon as they can materialize.I propose to write twenty-five pamphletslike this. Thus there are twenty more tocome. These written, I then propose to

86 HOW TO CONTROL FATE

write several large volumes, unfolding asystem of "NOW" Philosophy. It is forthis reason that I desire the Home I men-tioned above to materialize. This will givethe leisure, the opportunity and the meansthat I need. What I will call the system Iam as much at a loss now to know as wasHerbert Spencer for years concerning hisown. But the name will come, the meanswill come and, at the right time, the bookswill materialize. We control Fate throughSuggestion made as these are in faith inPrinciple-faith in Self. I know all whoread this book wish me to see themmaterialize. Your thought will be an addedpower to help. Means are to come for thepreparatory work of pamphlet printing, which is but an introduction to the greaterwork.

I am just entering the productive periodof my life. I write this on my sixty-fifthbirthday. Was never so well in body, soclear in mind or so in love with, or soenthusiastic in, my work as now. I neverlisten to a Suggestion of Age, weariness orrelief. I am in embryo all now that Iwish to be. As bud unfolds into bloom, sowill you and I unfold only that which wenow are. Suggestion to this effect creates

a mental condition which makes it easy forthe germs within to come into expression. Therefore now affirm with me :-I AM ALLnow, I DESIRE TO BE AND I HAVE POWER

TO BRING THAT WHICH I AM INTO MANI-

FESTATION. For this reason that Philo-sophy which I am will write itself at theright time. This little book is the firstchapter.

It seems proper for me thus to take you,my reader, into my confidence since thislittle book that introduced me to the worldstarts out on its new edition. I desired totell you how successfully the Law hasworked in my case since November, go90,when it started on its mission. Tenthousand copies have been disposed of, andeach one has carried its message-BE THY-SELF! They have won for me the love ofthousands whose words of cheer I can only inthis way reciprocate.

Soon I will come to you with a littlebook upon "Concentration." I am so oftenasked "How to Concentrate?" and whatit means, that in answer to these questionsI write this as the next number in thisseries. I have also ready for publicationa work on "The Practical Application ofSuggestion in Daily Life." If you are

seeking unfoldment we shall long keepcompany. We will be companions on theway.

A most encouraging feature of modemprogress is a realization of the interest inthings material giving way before interestin Soul. Psychic Research Societies andinvestigations in laboratories for the be-ginnings of life are but evidences of a de-mand for that for which there is as yet noadequate supply. From personal experienceand from the testimony of thousands, Iaffirm that rest is found only in thePrinciples upon which all New Thoughtcults are based. Hunger drives birds tograin fields and deer to the winter corral;so soul-hunger drives men and women fromthe starvation of fashion, social dissipation, from business mart and sanitarium to theMental Scientist, where they learn thattheir only Power, their only Possession, isthemselves. Where they come into therealization that happiness does not consistin material things, friends or conditions, but does consist in a purely mental attitudetowards one's self and the universe. Happi-ness, like all else, is a mental habit. Heis happy who decides to be happy. TheSuggestion of happiness creates happiness.

Page 88: HOW TO CONTROL FATE · how to control fate through suggestion a lesson in soul culture by henry harrison brown author of i"success: how it is won through affirmation"; 9 man's greatest

THROUGH SUGGESTION. 89

A Suggestion of misery will create it in apalace. A Suggestion of peace will createpeace in the midst of tumult. When onesays, "I am unhappy," he or she createsthat condition within the mind. When onesays, "I am happy," they create happinesswithin the mind, its only habitation. "Thekingdom of heaven" is the kingdom ofhappiness. It lies only within the conscious-ness, and depends only upon the Affir-mation one uses.

Thus does one become the Master of Fatethrough decision and self-determination ?"What shall be the Affirmation under whichI live?" is the question. It is as easy tosay "I am Happy," as it is the reverse; aseasy to create a habit of using these wordsas it is the habit of using their opposite.Optimism and pessimism are mental habits.Which shall it be? is a question each mustdecide for himself.

A gentleman said to me last night: " I can-not tell you what I owe to your instruction.I was a pessimist and unhappy when Ientered your class. I now see everythingfrom an opposite point of view, and am anoptimist." Through a course in Suggestionhe had learned that not only was he thatwhich he thought, but that each thing had

90 CONTROL FATE THROUGH SUGGESTION.

the effect upon him that he thoughtit would. Through expectancy he createdthe conditions for the effect affirmed.

This change will come to every one ofmy readers when this Thought, I AMTHAT WHICH I THINK I AM, shallbecome to them the mental incentive ofaction. As I THINK I AM. I WILL THINKONLY THAT WHICH I WISH TO BE. I WILLTHINK IDEAL THINGS, AND THUS CREATEHAPPINESS.

Dear reader, as my last admonition, Iaffirm that Happiness is the subjectiveside, the CAUSE of health. Unhappinessis the subjective side and the CAUSE ofdisease. Choose! Which shall it be ?The old prophet said, "As for me and myhouse, we will serve the Lord." "The king-dom of God is within." Him I serve.

Not Hypnotism, but SuggestionTHIS is a needed book, so great is the misunderstanding ofthe power of Suggestion, and since so many are making" Hypnotism" an excuse and a scapegoat for their own folly. The author claims that the phenomena termed " hypnotic "is a condition of Receptivity necessary to SELF-MASTERY.The phenomena is due to the action of the Subjective mind, and should be studied until the Art of Self-Suggestion is soperfect that the individual can through it make of himselfthat which he desires. He claims that through the use ofSuggestion, all physical, mental and moral conditions can bechanged for the better, and that to know the art Suggestion,is to know how PROPERLY to live.

Many hints as to the use of this Power are scatteredthrough the book.

Self-Healing through SuggestionTHIs book was first printed in 1905, and has had a phenomenalsale. In Part First the Principles of Mental Healing aresimply and plainly set forth. Healing is dealt with in thesame manner as the Professor of Chemistry or Physics dealswith his subject.

EVERY QUESTION naturally asked in relation todrugless healing is answered.

In Part Second all the necessary directions and formulasare given for self-healing. All any one needs to know, thathe may be able to use thought for the restoration of health,is here stated in terms so simple that the ordinary personcan follow it.

The author, having thirty years' experience in variousfields of drugless healing, is now able to write from a full, ripe mind. He has given the simplest and the best workupon this all-important subject, at the same time the cost iswithin the reach of every one.

Man's Greatest Discovery.Six Soul Culture Essays.

THSE six Essays are the most original series of Essayspublished in the past one hundred years. They open to thethought of to-day principles that it will probably take themajority of men a century to realise. The author considersthat the Principle of Thought as power will cause acomplete revolution in present methods of dealing withexternal nature. Thought will yet be the motor power, andman will, by the right use of thought, perform in daily lifethe wonders of the Hindoo Fakeers, who not only transportbodies but also themselves by thought without contact withany force that we term physical. The book is destined toawaken a discussion that has rarely been paralleled inscientific and philosophic circles.

Dollars Want Me.The New Road to Opulence, a Soul Culture Lesson.Tuis well conserves the purpose for which it was written.I wish to awaken my fellows to a sense of their presentpossessions and help them to a realisation of the principlewhich controls Life's expression, so that, Living being tothem "a fine art," they will cease to look for happiness insome far-off heaven, but will enter into the enjoyment ofthe one they create here and now. It is believed that thislittle monograph is the first utterance of the thought thateach individual has the ability to so radiate his mental forcethat he can cause the dollar to feel him, love him, seek him,and thus draw, at will, all things needed for his unfoldmentfrom the Universal Supply.

" It will help you to rise above the drudgery of enforcedlabour, and enable you to enter upon the manifold expressionsof life with the joy and spontaneity of childhood."
