INTRODUCTION: Discuss these questions with a partner: What do you know about Netflix? What does ‘to chill’ mean?

Marc Randolph Netfl ix founders Reed Hastings

READING 1: Netflix Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings founded Netflix in 1998. The company developed from DVD rentals, to on-line streaming, to becoming a global TV network and content producer with original shows such as ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’. However, analysts believe that it is the convenience of streaming and the ease of use for customers that make Netflix popular, rather than its content. In January 2019, Netflix had over 148 million global subscribers and added another 6 million by March 2019. These came from its aggressive expansion and helped to push the company value up by 7% and revenues to $16 billion. But there are risks to its growth. Netflix faces big competition from rivals such as Amazon Prime, and market saturation is also a problem. Netflix operates in most countries, but the biggest consumer market, China, remains out of reach. The company is hoping to start a service there in 2020. In a relaxed style, a company spokesperson said that regarding China, ‘our expectations are modest and long-term. We are chilled about it.’

COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

1. How has Netflix developed since it started? 2. What original shows does Netflix produce? 3. What makes Netflix so popular? 4. What are the risks to Netflix? 5. What is happening in China? 6. What do you think are Netflix’s future opportunities and problems?

Binge Watching = do some intensely for a short period of time. Binge watching is the act of watching episodes of a TV show one after another.

EXERCISE: Insert regret / wish / if only into the gaps

READING 2: Binge Watching Do you ever watch multiple episodes of your favourite TV show and ………… you hadn’t? 60% of TV streamers regularly engage in binge watching, according to a recent survey conducted for Netflix. A binge is classed as viewing between 2 and 6 episodes of a show in a continuous session. ………… it were easy to limit your viewing, but services like Netflix make it so easy to watch several episodes at once. Adults who watch more than 5 hours of TV a day double the risk of premature death compared to those who watch less. And it can be a solitary activity, with over 60% of binge watchers sitting alone. Some people argue that binge watching is harmless, but the isolation and physical problems associated with inactivity and snacking are dangerous. When it becomes an issue you start to neglect your work and your personal relationships. People often ………….. binge watching sessions, but the desire to sit through just one more episode is hard to resist.

AUDIO 1 – intermediate Netfl ix Netflix Intermediate level – listening 1 Netflix was founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in 1998. They were technology fans and had experience of developing and running successful websites. They had the idea of creating a website that made it easy for people to rent DVDs from home without having to visit the video shop. However, in the late 1990s the DVD player was an expensive luxury in America and few people owned one. On the plus side, the picture quality of a DVD was much better than video, they were smaller in size making storage easier, and it cost the price of a single stamp to send a DVD across the USA. Randolph and Hastings decided they had seen the future of home entertainment and invested $2.5 million to get the business started.

AUDIO 2 – intermediate Netfl ix

Listening 2 In 2002, Netflix became the leader in the DVD rental market when the cost of a DVD player dropped below $100. Sales revenues that year reached $150 million. In 2005, Netflix shipped over a million DVDs every single day and had more than 35,000 films in its library. In 2010, with better broadband availability, Netflix launched online streaming of movies and this made it one of the most visited websites in America. The rise of Netflix has affected the way audiences watch televised content. Head of products, Neil Hunt, believes that Netflix is a model for what television will look like in 2025. Netflix's subscription fee also eliminates the need for commercials.
