Realquickaboutme/myfamilyifyouhaven’tbumpedintousbefore-Myfamily

consistsofmyhusbandSimon(British),mydaughter,Sienna(age7atthetimeof

Overthecourseofourtravelswe’vemeethundredsofsailors.Andduetoourblog,

YouTubechannel,FaceBookpageandotheronlinehangoutswe’vemetthousandsof

sailors(virtually)–new,oldandthosegettingreadytoenjoythesailinglifestylefor

thefirsttime.

Withallourtravelsandnewfriendswe’venotonlyexperiencedamassiveamount

butwe’vealsoheardstoryuponstory–somegoodandsomenotsogood.

So,thisismykeymessage-thesailingcommunityisfullofgreatpeople.Thepeople

whoworkinthesailingindustry(boatbrokers,sailingserviceprofessionals,marina

managers,etc.),however,aremostoftendisingenuous,corruptpeople.

Newandoldsailorsaregettingrippedoffallthetime.Andtheplacewhere

theygetrippedoffthemostiswhentheypurchaseaboat.

Butit’snotjustthemarineindustry‘professionals’thataretoblame.It’salsous

sailors.There’ssomuchinformationnowdaysthatit’shardtofigureoutwhatwe

needtoknowtomakeeducateddecisions.BuyingasailboatisNOTlikebuyinga

houseandit’scertainlynotlikebuyingacar.

Buying,owning,maintainingandsailing/motoringaboatcanbeimmensely

rewarding.There’ssomethingsoappealingaboutthethoughtofheadingoutintoa

greatblueexpanse.Thesoftbreezeagainstyourskin,thesmellofthesaltyseaair

andthefundamentalabsenceof‘normal’lifeissoincrediblyfulfilling.

Withpeopledoingmoreinlesstime,technologyadvancingbythesecondandthe

overwhelmingamountofinformationoverloadthataboundsintoday’ssociety,

boatingisnowevenmoreappealingthaneverbefore.

Spendingtheweekendsonaboathelpstorechargebatteries,reducestressand

providearewardforallthehardworkthat’sdoneduringworkinghours.Andfor

thosefortunateenoughtotakeasabbaticalorsellupandsailaway,boating

providesanalternativelifestylethatsupersedesanylifestylelivedbefore.

AndIspeakfromexperience.Afterspendingeightyearsofseekingworld

dominancethroughmylastcompany,Ifoundmyselfburntout,unhappyand

approachingsomesortofhealthcalamity.Thecompanywasverysuccessfulbutthe

successcamewithaprice.Withouryoungdaughterintow,myhusbandandI

decidedtomakeabreak.Aspreviouslymentioned,wesoldallourpossessions,

purchasedaboatandstartedsailingin2013.We’vebeensailingandlivingaboard

ourboateversince.

Lookingback,itwasthebestdecisionwecouldhaveevermade.Sure,wegaveup

thepromiseoffinancialsecurity,thecomfortofowningourownhomeandthe

approvalofwhatsocietydeems‘right,’butitwaswellworthit.Forseveralyears

nowwe’veexperiencedwhatitmeanstotrulylivelife.Tobealiveinallsensesof

theword.


Backonlandweweremerelyexisting,orasagoodfriendofminewouldsay,we

were,‘slowlydecomposing.’Outontheboat,weexperienceincrediblesights,meet

themostfantasticpeople,sampleincrediblydeliciousfoodsandtakeintheabsolute

stunningbeautythatthisworldhasonoffer.

Butithasn’tbeeneasy.Thingsbreakallthetime.We’vebeencaughtoutinstorms.

We’vewatchedoursavingsdraindown.Thingsthatareeasybackonlandcanprove

tobeverydifficultwhenlivingonaboat.

Livingfulltimeisnoteasybutitsureisfulfilling.

AndalthoughthesailingcommunityisthebestgroupofpeopleI’veevermet

(sailorswilldoanythingandeverythingforothersailors),theactualsailingor

marineindustryhousesthemostdisingenuous,corrupt,evil,backward,greedy

groupofpeopleI’veevercomeacross.

Theironyisincredible.

Theproblemwiththeboatingdreamisthat‘youdon’tknowwhatyoudon’tknow’.

Or,themorepositivespinonthatsayingis,‘youonlyknowwhatyouknow.’

Thejourneyanddestinationinvolvedinbuyingaboatcanleadtoheavenorhell.

Someboatbuyersgettheperfectboat,findserviceprovidersthatactuallygive

ratherthantakeandgrowsmoothlyintotheboatinglifestyle.

Others,however,arenotsofortunate.Manycurrentdisgruntledboatownershave

beensoldthewrongboat.Perhapstheboatistoobigfortheownertoever

confidentlyoperate?Orperhapstoocomplicated?Inmanycasestheboatisina

terriblestateandtheboatownerfindsouttoolate–aftertheyowntheboat.


SeveralreadersrespondedtoanemailIwroteregardingexperiencewithboat

brokers.IcouldcreateabookonthefeedbackIreceived.Interestingly,butnot

surprisingly,Ididn’tgetanypositiveemails.

Thisaccountseemedtobethemostextreme,soletmeshareitwithyoujusttogive

youanideaofhowbadboatbrokerscanreallybe:

Ihavepreviouslyownedamonohullsailboat(boughtinUKallgood

experience)andacatamaran(boughtinCaribbean...actuallyweflewoutto

view,arrangedmeetingfor3pm,confirmeddaybefore,gotthereandhewas

out!)soIknowalittleaboutbuyingaboat.

Forthepast10monthsIhavebeentryingdesperatelytobuyanother

cruisingboat.

Ihaveneverinmylifemetsuchashoweroflyingcheatingbackstabbing

conmen(andwomen)inmylifeasthecurrentboatbrokers!Ithinkthatit

wouldbedoingour'carsalesmen'adisservicecomparingthemtoboat

brokers!Iworkinwhatyouwouldcall'realestate'andthereareafew

sharksthatIhavemetinthisovertheyears....allamateurscomparedtoyour

averageboatbroker!

IhaveflowntoSpaintoviewaboatthathadalreadybeensold!Flownto

Italytoseeaboatthatdidn’texistandthenflewtoFrancetoviewaboatthat

hadNOproofofownership!IfoundaboatinItalythathadaleaseonitbeing

soldasunencumbered(verycommoninItaly…beware)flowntoCroatiato

seesuchaloadofwornoutrubbishyouwouldnotbelieveit(photoswere

giventobeofatotallydifferentboat)!


Ihavegonetoviewaboatasarranged(specificallyanon-chartered/never

charteredboat)tobetoldbythemarina(whenIcouldn'tfindit)thatitwas,

yesyouguessed,outoncharter.

EventheboatswehaveviewedinsouthernUSAandBritainhaveinalotof

casesbeentrashed,thelastonebeingaBeneteau57inUKthatwassobadly

maintainedIcouldn'tbelieveitactuallyfloated.

SofarIhaveagreedaprice(subjecttosurveyandviewing)onFOURboats

onlyevertoactuallyproceedtoonesurvey.TheonethatIdidhavesurveyed

hadsevereosmosisthatthebrokershouldhaveknownabout.

ManyadvertsonYachtworldhavephotosofANOTHERBOAT-nottheone

youaregoingtolookatorphotosfromseveralyearsago.MOSTadsonthere

arefrom'brokers'whoeitherarenotlistingthatboatdirectly(theycopy

anotherlistingchangeafewphotos)andputacheaperpriceoraboatthat

doesn'texist,orwassoldmonthsago.ItappearsthatANYONEcanbea

broker!

Nowafter'convincing'myotherhalftodoacircumnavigation,usboth

gettingexcitedandmakingplansFOURtimesandthenflyingoutandviewing

aloadofrubbishshehasgoneofftheidea(Idon’tblameher)andIamsickof

it.

Brokersarepaidsohighlythattheydon’tneedtotry,don’tcareiftheywaste

yourtime,themoneycomesinfromsomewheresometimeforthatboat

anyway,andthisattitudeiswidespread.

Ijustdon’tgetit,insailingover22,000miles,Ihavenevermetabadsailor-

notone!Allhavebeenveryhelpful,generous,honestandgoodfun,but

brokersaretheexactopposite,withafewexceptions.


Thegentlemanthatwrotemetheaboveemailwantedtoremainanonymous.I

wonderifhe’llgetaboatorifthedreamisdone?

Andwhataboutboatbuyersthatmanagetogettheboatbutit’sthewrong(for

them)boat?

DuringourbuyingprocessourinitialbrokerintheUKwasfantastic.Wefelthimto

beverygenuine,helpfulandup-front.Whenthetimecametoviewtheboatanddoa

survey,wewerepassedtoanotherbrokerastheboatwaslocatedinMajorca,Spain.

Oursecondbroker,fromthesamecompany,wasterrible.Wefeltlikewewere

inconveniencinghim.Whenweaskedaquestionwegotagenericanswer.Upon

takingpossessionoftheboatweenquiredastoarundownonhowtheboatworked

andthebrokers’responsewas,‘Oysterownerstendtowanttofigurethingsout

themselves…’

Noteverybrokerisbad.Thekeyistoknowthatthere’sapotentialfordishonesty

andshoddyworkethicsintheboatbuyingindustryandactaccordingly.Buyinga

boatislikedoingbusinessbackinthedaysoftheWildWest.

Myhopeistoprovideablueprintofsorts-sotohelpyouunderstandthesteps

involvedinbuyingaboat.Myaimisto,attheveryleast,attempttodecreasethegap

betweentheunknownandknownandpossiblyarmyouwiththerightquestionsto

askorscenariostoconsider.


10StepsToGettingTheRightBoatForTheRightPrice

Step1:UnderstandTheBigPicture

Definewhereyouare,whereyouwanttogoandwhatyouwanttoachieveby

becomingaboatowner.

Putasideanythoughtsofwhatmakeandmodelboatyouwant.Theimportant

startingpoint,whichmanypeoplemissout,istodefinetheendgoal.

Youdon’tjustbuyaboatforthesakeofbuyingaboat.You’rebuyingitformore

freedomand/orconnectiontonatureand/orfamilybondingand/ortheabilityto

traveltoparticularareasoftheworldtoenjoyamazingdestinationsand/ormagical

memories,or/and…

Andunlessyou’rebuyingtheboattosailalone,there’sgoingtobeatleastoneother

person,orperhapsawholefamily,thathastosharethegoalandbeapartofthe

process.

Themorespecificyouarewithwhatyouwant,inalignmentwithyour

partner/family,themorelikelyyou’llachieveit.Themoreyoudefinewhatyour

expectationsare,themorelikelyyou’llasktherightquestionstodeterminewhether

ornotaparticularboatisrightforyou.

I’vemettoomanyboatownersthatpurchasedthewrongboatforwhatthey

wantedtoachieve.

Bydoingso,they’vebeendisappointedwiththeoutcome.Tospendsomuchtime,

effortandmoneyonlytogetitwrongisashame.


MyhusbandandIknowalovelygentlemanthatdreamedofbuyingaboatupon

retirementfromhismanagementconsultancybusiness.Hisgoalwastobuy

somethingverylargesohiswifewouldbehappywiththespace.Healsowantedthe

boattobesafesohedecidedasteelhullwasbest.

Thedreamwasforhimandhiswifetosailaroundseeingtheworldbyboat.

Intheend,ourfriendpurchaseda65’ketch,haditsailedfromEuropetoAmerican,

spentaround$200,000torenovateitandthendeterminedtheboatwaswaytoobig

andcomplicatedforthecoupletohandle.Theboathasn’tbeensailed,it’snowupfor

saleanditmaytakeyearstosell,ifever.Themoneyisalltiedupintheboatmaking

itdifficultforthecoupletomoveonandenjoytheirretirement.Thedreamisnowa

nightmare.

Ifyoudon’tknowwhatyouwantsomeoneelsewilltellyouwhatyouwant.

Inotherwords,ifyou’renotsolidonwhatyouwantandwhyyouwantitthere’sa

possibilitythatasalespersonwillbeabletomanipulateyourdecisionmaking

process–andboatbrokersareverygoodatthis.There’sapossibilitythatyou’llbe

soldsomethingyoudon’treallyneedorsomethingthatisflatoutwrongforyouand

yourabilitiesandrequirements.


Step2:PrioritizeYourRequirements

It’smassivelyimportanttounderstandasmanyboatvariablesaspossible,andhow

they’llaffectyou/yourpartner/yourfamily,todeterminewhatisandisnota

priorityforyourfutureboatandlifestyle.Ifyouhadtodefineyourperfectboat,in

relationtoyourendgoal,wouldyoubeabletodefineitnow?

InStep1,Iaskedyoutodefinetheendgoalforyoursailingdream–whatdoyou

wanttoachievebyhavingaboat.Inthisstep,Iwantyoutostartthinkingaboutthe

particularboatthatwillhelpyouachievethedream.

Someboatsaremadeforcrossingoceansandothersaremoresuitableforcalm

protectedwaters.Someboatshaveacockpitthatissaferforchildrenwhereas

othersarenotsuitable.Someboatsgettossedaroundmakingthejourneyless

comfortableandmorepronetoinducingseasicknessonitspassengers.Someboats

arebuilttoslicethroughthewavesratherthanbouncearound.

Someboatsrequiresailorstostayinthecockpitwhenhandlingsailswhereasothers

requiretheneedforapersonatthemastorforedeck(eveninastorm).Someboats

arefullofautomationmakingiteasytosailwhereasothersareverymanualand

takequiteabitofmanuallabor.

Someboatscanbeacquiredfornexttonothingandotherscostmillions.And….

Someboatswillbeeasiertosell,overothers,whenyourtimeboatingisdone.The

listgoeson.

Considerwhereyou’regoingtobesailinginrelationtothetypeofboatyou

purchase.


Ifyou’rethinkingofsailingtheBahamas,it’sveryshallowsoaCatamaranmightbe

worthconsidering.If,however,you’regoingtosailaroundtheworld,youmight

wantaheavydisplacementboatenablingasmootherandsaferjourney.

Lookatwhereyouwanttosailandfindoutwhatthedepthofthewaterisandthe

heightofanybridges.IfyouwanttosailAmerica’sIntercostalWaterwayormotor

throughthecanalsinFrance,therearedefiniterestrictions.

Alsolookattidesandcomplicationsregardingthesailingarea.Ifthere’safasttidal

stream,failingtoprioritizebowthrustersasakeyrequirementmightbe

detrimental.

Foreverychoicemadeonaboatthere’sawiderangeofimplications.

It’simportanttokeepinmindwhatyouwanttousetheboatforandthengo

throughkeyitemslikekeeltype,riggingconfiguration,cockpitlayout,saloonsetup,

electricity/power,watertanksandmaker,andsoforthtodeterminewhatisand

whatisnotimportant.

Ifyou’rebuyingaboattosailintheGreatLakes,there’snoneedtopaytheextra

moneyforaheavydisplacementboat.Ifthere’snotide,specialequipmenttomake

boatmaneuveringeasiermightnotbenecessary.Ifyou’resailingacrossanocean,

youmostlikelydon’twantagalleythat’sinanopenarea–you’llwantitina

corridorsothere’ssomethingtoholdyoufromflyingacrosstheboat.

Thereareendlessoptionswhenbuyingaboatandtheyallcomeatacost.Makesure

toknowexactlywhatyouwantandwhyyouwantit.Saveyourmoneyonthingsyou

don’tneedforfutureservicing,maintenanceandrepairs.


Aswegrowupwemightmovehouseacoupletimeswithourparents.Eventually

weleavethenestandgetanapartmentorourownhouse.Wethenupgradeover

time–eachtimerefiningourlikesanddislikesmoreandmore.

4.Alwaysbereadyandwillingtowalkaway.Andkeepinmindthatyoucanusually

walkbackifyoudowalkaway.Byhavingtheconfidencetosay’no’toadealyou

showthatyou’renotdesperateoremotionallyovercome.Showingthatyouhave
