Hampshire World Music
Festival 2018 Join us for a musical multi-cultural experience for ages 7 and above.
A great day out for the whole family, with three brand new workshops
Choose your own experience from tariffs exploring up to hands-on world percussion workshops all in one day! Soak up the family-friendly atmosphere, enjoy the variety of workshops and let our experienced national tutors guide you...
Javanese Gamelan Workshop tutor: Andy Channing The Indonesian Gamelan is an orchestra of bronze gongs, metallophones and percussion; as impressive visually as it is spellbinding musically. Try something different in a meditative musical experience.
West African Drumming Workshop tutor: Dan Priest Build up a rhythmic piece together with a selection of West African drums, including Djembes. West African drumming is
typically constructed of many different parts, interlocking to create a polyrhythm - often led by a master drummer using call and response patterns.
Brazilian Samba Workshop tutor: Dan Priest Samba is an expression of the dynamic culture of the people of Brazil - from its roots in Carnaval, the infectious rhythms and extrovert sounds of Samba
have spread all over the world. Come and join the party as we create our own carnival atmosphere using a variety of drums, shakers and bells.
Caribbean Steel Drums Workshop tutor: Greg Walker Experience the traditional music of Trinidad and Tobago by learning songs both traditional and popular on these amazing instruments made out of oil drums. Pans of
different sizes play different parts, from the small melody pans right down to the big bass pans.
Punjabi Dhol Drums Workshop tutor: Adam Broughton Historically associated with Punjabi music and dance, this drum became the ground roots of modern Bhangra music. Played slung over the shoulder using a
different stick in each hand, these loud drums will develop your rhythmic and coordination skills whilst raising the roof.
All workshops are for all abilities and are all inclusive, so bring the family! Suitable for ages 7 and above. Younger children are welcome with an accompanying adult, but will not be catered for specifically.

North African Doumbeks Workshop tutor: Adam Broughton These goblet shaped hand drums are used across the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe. Learn how to make different sounds using different finger and hand techniques and perform a
piece together using rhythms typically heard accompanying belly dancing.
Indian Tabla Workshop tutor: Steve Morley The repertoire of the Tabla has developed over centuries at the heart of Indian music with the subtleties of the traditional rhythmic Tala. Learn to
vocalise the rhythmic bols and then apply them to these wonderful evocative instruments.

different sizes play different parts, from the small melody pans right down to the big bass pans.
Japanese Taiko Workshop tutor: Luke Jones Taiko means literally ‘fat drum’, although there are actually many different sizes and shapes of drum played. Originating in Japan, this highly
disciplined art form is the fusion of intricate rhythms, with specific martial art movements.
Nigerian Udu Workshop tutor: Steve Morley Udu are clay drums originally from Nigeria. They have been adopted all over the world by percussionists in all styles. The texture is layered, with several independent parts interlocking. Explore
rhythmic pieces and the range of sounds these amazing instruments can produce in a rather quieter workshop!
African Marimbas and Mbiras Workshop tutor: Adam Broughton Simple interlocking melodies create a beautiful melodic performance on these African tuned percussion instruments and
thumb pianos. A quieter and more reflective option, you will leave feeling refreshed and inspired.
