How to Become a Freelance Writer
Josephine McKenna is an Australian freelance writer in Rome. After eight years living in Italy she has just
launched her own freelance business at http://josephinemckenna.net/
Josephine McKenna has been a journalist for more than 35 years and worked in TV, radio, print and
online media in the US, Japan, Australia and Italy. She is totally bilingual and now available to work as a
freelance journalist Rome.
“I fell in love with Italy on my first visit many years ago and followed a dream to become a freelance
journalist here in Rome,” she says.
“I follow breaking news and features on everything from the Vatican, to politics, immigration and the
Mafia, but I particularly enjoy writing about food and wine, fashion, archeology and the arts – while
discovering Italy’s most spectacular travel destinations.”
While working as freelance journalist Italy Josephine works for herself but wants to share her insights
into the culture and the fabulous lifestyle that is only found in Italy.
“Italy is more than a country, it’s an adventure! I love the challenge and the thrill of finding out what
makes it tick, whether it’s discovering the country’s best chefs, designers, winemakers, art and cultural
treasures or simply its stunning natural scenery,” she says.
“I cover Italy for a number of international newspapers and magazines and work as a freelance TV
producer and guest commentator for TV and radio networks. I look forward to expanding my network as
a freelance Rome correspondent.
In the brief time Josephine McKenna has lived and worked in Rome, she has covered the rise and fall of
former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the rise of the Calabrian mafia known as ‘Ndrangheta,
the Costa Concordia shipwreck disaster, andseveral earthquakes.
One of the highlights of her coverage was following the historic resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the
conclave of cardinals that elected the first-ever pope from Latin America, Pope Francis, in 2013. Since his
election Pope Francis has been an engine of change in the Catholic Church and there is global interest
inside and outside the church in his new style of leadership.
Talent and experience are important when covering such a complex country. With years of experience
and several years living on the ground in Italy, Josephine McKenna delivers analysis and insights that
makes her stand out from the crowd.
