Finding Off-Campus Housing
1. Begin with broad options and then narrow down.
2. Prioritize the type of housing you want to live in.
3. Develop a financial budget for rent, utilities, food, transportation, entertainment and emergency costs.
4. Consider what types of transportation are available and convenient.
5. Research the area’s safety by looking up area crime statistics.
6. Look before you lease.
7. Get it in writing! Read and understand your lease. If you have questions visit the Office of Undergraduate and Graduate Legal Aid for assistance.
8. Consider if you want to invest in a dining plan.
9. Consider obtaining renters’ insurance.
Top 10 Off-Campus Terp Tips!1. You’re a Terp – Stay connected and get involved on campus!
2. Be safe. Use your common sense and make safe choices. • Lock your door and take your keys with you.• Travel in well-lit areas.• Make sure smoke detectors work, etc.
3. Being someone’s friend doesn’t make them an automatic good roommate choice.
4. Find potential roommates who have the same living preferences as you. (e.g., cleanliness, sleeping habits, perspective on guests, etc.)
5. Think about how you’re going to get groceries and other necessities.
Top 10 Off-Campus Terp Tips!6. Establish “house rules” and “chores schedule” with
your roommates.
7. Know your rights as a tenant.
8. It’s important to be a good neighbor.
9. Make your off-campus apartment your home.
10. Have fun!
