Singing is a skill based on muscle memory. It is an extension of speech. To become a"good" singer you must be able to breathe properly, sing with power (resonance) and sing on

pitch. To become a "great" singer you'll need to add musicality that only comes with

incessant practice. Singing is a lot of fun and most likely you will be admired if you're a good

    singer.

    EditSteps

    1. 1

Find a vocal coach or qualified voice teacher. It could be someone you know who has

gone through voice training already, but it is always good to look for a professional.

Incorrectly performed techniques can ruin your singing voice. Investing in an experienced

vocal coach is well worth the money. If your voice is weak, know that this is usually caused

by under-developed muscles or improper use of the resonators (the pharynx, the hard

    palate, and the nasal cavity).

o If you cannot afford or do not want the dedication that comes with hiring a

professionalvoicecoach, consider joining a local choir.or you could put yourself singing on

www.youtube.com. There are also a few learn at home vocal training courses out there such

as Singing Success, Sing and See, Singorama, Singing for the Stars and Vocal Release, but

be sure to do your research to see which ones have really worked for other singers.

o Be careful in your choice of teacher -- there are some bad ones out there. If you're in a

school with choir, get in there and sing your heart out! If you don't want to have to pay for

voice lessons try to google some singing and vocal exercises.

    2. 2

Learn your vocal range. This is essential, as singing pieces written for the wrong range

may strain yourvoice. The tone of your voice is much more important than range. People

willloveor hate your voice based on its sound character, not how many notes you can hit.

Never sacrifice tone for range (stay inside your range). Your range can change over time

and with maturity and training but vocal chords can not learn to physically change.

    3. 3

Correct your posture. Stand tall with one foot slightly in front of the other one, feet shoulder

width apart. This allows you tobreatheeasily and to allow maximum lung capacity to allow

better notes and phrases. Stand up straight, shoulders back and down, floating over your

torso. Make sure that your chest is high to give room for your lungs to expand and

    contract.Relaxyour jaw, relax your face.

    4. 4

Breathe properly. The voice is best described as a wind instrument, because breathing is

80% of singing and proper singing begins and ends with proper breathing.

    5. 5

Get to know your singing tools so that you are more familiar with how everything is

    supposed to move and feel.

o Touch the top of your collar bone. About a half of an inch below your finger is the top of your

    lungs.

o Find your nipple line. This is the place where your lungs expand the largest.

o Find your ribs. Your ribs move like bucket handles attached to your spine and your sternum.

When you breath in, they move upward and make your chest expand, when you breathe out,

they move downward and your chest decreases.

o Find the place right below your sternum where your rib cages meet. This is the bottom of

your lungs and the housing of your diaphragm. The reason your stomach may pooch out

when you breathe deeply is because your diaphragm is pushing down on everything belowyour rib cage, not because your lungs are in your stomach.

Develop and show your confidence. Do not care what people think, just keep practicing

and you will gain confidence. Make sure that you are ready to sing.

    7. 7

Always warm up before you begin singing or doing practice exercises. You should

always warm your voice up in this pattern: middle range, low range, then high range, then

back to middle. You should spend at least 10 minutes on each range and do not stress your

voice if you're frustrated and cannot hit a note. Warm back down or up to your comfortable

range and then try again, carefully. Other things to practice:

o Dynamics - Sing a comfortable pitch and start very softly, crescendo to loud then

decrescendo back to soft. Do this with many different vowels and pitches. Dynamics are

variations the intensity of your resonance. Even the simplest use of dynamics will make your

songs come alive, and the more you practice, the louder and softer you'll be able to sing

healthily. When reading music, from quietest to loudest, dynamics marks are as follows: pp

(pianissimo, very quiet), p (piano, quiet), mp (mezzo piano, medium quiet), mf (mezzo forte,

medium loud), f (forte, loud), ff (fortissimo, very loud). When you start out you will probably

only be able to sing from mp to mf, but your range will increase with practice.

o Agility - Try singing from do to sol to do really fast back and forth, trying to hit all of the notes.

Do this in increments of half steps on different syllables. This will help your voice becomemore flexible.

    8. 8

Pronounce your vowels correctly. Words are truly nothing but a constant succession of

vowels with consonants dropped in occasionally to create meaning. So practice all your

vowels at every pitch (high, low and in between). In English there are very few pure vowels.

Normally, we will encounter diphthongs which are two or more vowel sounds elided together.

In classical singing, the singer will sustain the note on the first vowel and then say the

second on the way to the final consonant. In country, singers like to slide through the firstvowel and elongate the second vowel on the sustained note. Where as: a classical signer

would sing "Am[aaaaaaai]zing Gr[aaaaaai]ce" and a country singer would sing

"Am[aiiiiiii]zing Gr[aiiiiii]ce". If you can, always sing the first vowel for as long as you can

before letting the second vowel in. Here are some pure vowels to practice with: AH as in

"father", EE as in "eat", IH as in "pin", EH as in "pet", OO as in "food", UH as in "under", EU

as in "could", OH as in "home". Try singing all of these vowels while maintaining your core

sound which is the resonance in the mask of the face. You can do this in many ways. Some

examples of singing exercises that use vowels are just singing "mee may maw mow moo"

and fluctuating the voice as you go. This warms your voice up and gives you practice with

    singing vowels.

    9. 9

Practice scales. You need to do this often if you have pitch problems. Most coaches will

recommend 20-30 minutes a day when starting out. Practicing scales will also strengthen the

muscles used for singing and give you better control. To practice scales, identify your range(tenor, baritone, alto, soprano, etc.) and know how to find the notes that cover your range on

a keyboard or piano. Then practice the major scale in every key moving up and down using

the vowel sounds. At some point you can start working in minor scales as well. Solfege

(Do,Re,Mi,...) is also an effective tool for improving pitch problems.

    10. 10

Be reasonable with your self-expectations. Regardless of where you are coming from, if

you can devote 20 minutes or more a day to practicing scales and songs you can expect

measurable improvement within four weeks. Most pitch problems can be corrected within 3-4

months. Understand that your progress is linked to your ability to practice daily (as with most

training). If you only do 15 minutes a day, a few days a week, you could spend a year or

more. If you devote yourself you could completely transform your voice in three months.

    Everyone is different.

Master the amount and form of vocal cord closure for better sound and voice-health...

EditTips Cool down your voice after singing. Always do the lip roll exercise after singing.

A good practice technique to find resonance is to sing while bent over the back of a chair.

Feel the mask of the face (the area around the nose, under the eyes and the top of the

teeth) vibrating. This is the body's microphone. Always try to place the tone in the mask ofthe face.

The best kind of nutrition for the voice is water. Water will do many wonderful things for the

voice and is also very essential to your body. If you are sick, pineapple juice may clear the

throat of phlegm but don't make a habit of anything besides water. Don't drink milk or orange

juice before singing. Your voice will sound "blocked" by something. Sugar coats your throat.

Imagine trying to stuff maple syrup in a flute to make it sound better!

There are two different registers of the voice, the head voice and the chest voice. In popular

music, singers rarely produce sound for the head voice since it is harder to sound like you

are speaking in your head voice. Popular singers do not like to venture much from the

speaking voice. The chest voice actually feels like it is coming from the chest. You can feelthe registers change if you sing up a scale from your lowest note to your highest note. Your

head voice is what you will be using primarily in classical singing. Even though there may be

breaks between your registers, you can train and practice to eliminate those breaks. An

advanced singer can continually move from chest to head voice and back again without any

    vocal disturbance.

A big area of concern will be the break in your voice between head and chest voice. Women

and men both have that. It is called the passagio ("passage" in Italian). This place is different

for each singer and can be trained to not break when sung through.

Get in shape. You'll be able tobreathebetter if you are in good physical health.

Avoid a nasal sound; sing from your diaphragm. If you think you have a nasal sound, try

breathing through your nose and your mouth at the same time.

Avoid screaming when you are singing. To do this, raise the soft palate (as in drinking

through a straw or yawning) and place the tone in the mask of the face.

Visualize a column of air rising from your diaphragm, through your chest, and up through

your facial mask. This technique will help your vocals be strong and present, and will greatly

    enhance the ease of singing.

It is helpful to imagine a gumball in your mouth. Think of a large round gumball or any objectthat is round, like a bouncy ball. Thinking of this creates a space in the back of your mouth,

allowing a deeper, more mature-sounding voice.

Always remember to just be yourself while singing. Remember that even if others don't say

so, you will always have a beautiful voice. If you are nervous about singing by yourself, try

first singing with a group of people.

Sing from your heart. Don't let others discourage you, and convince you that you can't sing.

It's what you think that matters, and if you want to make up a song, just sing what is on your

mind and write it down and .

Emoting isn't about how your face looks; it's about how you feel about the song!

Drink lots of water to keep your self hydrated: your vocal chords have a mucosal lining, which is like the cartilage between you bones. You need to stay hydrated so that you body

can produce this lining, it is what allows you to produce a healthy mucosal wave (vocal

chords coming together and vibrating) within your larynx.

o While drinking water is good for your voice and your body in general, drinking it right before

a performance will decrease your vocal quality as well, so drink a lot about 1-2 hours before

and stop all food/liquid intake about 45 minutes before performing.

When you are building the muscles used in singing, you will feel a little bit of movement and

the muscles will slightlytense and release. You never want to feel tension in your throat. If

your voice begins to hurt, stop singing for an hour, warm up, then try again but more relaxed.

Not only does this damage your vocal chords, your voice will sound 'stressed' and not

    pleasant.

If you are trying to sing a low note and produce a raspy sound, you are damaging your voice.

Basically, your vocal cords are rubbing against each other. A node is like a callous on your

vocal cords, and it won't go away without surgery or prolonged vocal rest (more than a year).

    Don't get one.

Pre-existing tension in your jaw, shoulders, neck muscles and all surrounding areas can hurt

you. Make sure you are completely relaxed before you sing. If your jaw is wobbling while you

are singing, that is a sign of tension in you jaw.

A raised larynx is a leading problem for many aspiring singers. If you put your finger on your

Adam's apple and yawn, you will feel it move up and back down. The lower position is where

    you need it to stay. Try to sing up a scale with your finger lightly touching your Adam's apple;

if it rises more than 1/2" then you have some problems. A raised larynx will make it so yourthroat closes making high notes impossible, it will also make it hard to produce resonance,

vibrato, etc. It's something you need to work with a qualified vocal coach to verify and

correct. Try singing in front of a mirror to make sure you do not develop any physical

    problems.

A small minority of people are tone deaf. Ask someone who is not tone deaf to play or sing a

pitch for you and try to match it. If you can not tell if you are matching the pitch or if you are

too low or too high, you may be tone deaf. This is not a fate worse than death. All you need

to do is just to keep on practicing your muscles until they have been regulated to sing on

pitch. Keep on practicing, you will get there!

Sing the pitches "do re mi fa so mi do." Sing "zi-ya" on the pitches. "Zi" is to be sung on

"do re mi fa" in legato. Make these notes smooth and connected. "Ya" is to be sung on "so

mi do." It is supposedly sung in stacatto. Make these notes short and separate, just like you

sang "ha." Putting these concepts together requires practice, as it involves transitioning

beween concepts. When singing "zi," try to keep the jaw relaxed. Do not open your mouth

too wide. In fact, sing this note with a rounded mouth that is only slightly open. This way, you

will achieve a soft sound that is round and full. When you sing "ya," do not widen the mouth

once again. Slightly elongate the shape of your mouth. Because this also involves

apregiation to some extent, it is always best to leave your hand on your diaphragm.

    6. 6

If you notice the keys on the piano, note that the pitch "do" occurs more than once

along the keys. The entire range of notes from one "do" to the next is called an octave. As

your vocal range expands, you may achieve the ability to sing several octaves. To practice

this, a piano would be very helpful. Press the key of the note "do" on the piano. This may be

anywhere, depending on the type of instrument you have, such as a soprano, alto, or mezzo.

Note that your voice will be traveling in an uprising fashion, so choose the spot accordingly.

Start from a pitch you can comfortably sing. If you are an alto, it is best to start at a spot

further down on the piano. Likewise, if you sing soprano, start higher. Mezzos should find aspot somewhere in between, midway throughout the keys. If you do not know your vocal

type, make an estimate and find what works for you. Press the key "do" on the piano, and

match pitch with your voice. Hold out this note as long as you comfortably can. Then, press

the "do" one octave higher than the one you were singing and match pitch, holding it out

accordingly. If you find this is too high for you, either start lower from the beginning, or you

could try half of an octave by going from "do" to "so" instead. After singing the higher note

"do" match pitch with the lower one again and sing it out to a comfortable extent. If you are a

beginner, this may be enough octave training for the day. If you choose to persevere and

move on, try singing out the note "re" as long as you comfortably can, then matching pitch

with the higher note "re" and holding it as long as you may. Then hold out the lower note "re"once more. Try this practice with the notes "mi, fa,, so, la, ti, etc. depending on the stretch of

your range. This exercise is intended to lengthen and strengthen the range of your vocal

chords. Please be cautioned of straining your instrument.

    7. 7

The basic solfege method is a system of symbols for each of the solfegge pitches.

The symbol for "do" is a fist. The symbol for "re" is a slanted hand with the side of your hand

facing towards you, as should your thumb. Your finger tips should point slightly to the left.

  • 7/28/2019 How to be a singer

    9/21

The symbol for "mi" is a flat hand as if you were placing it on a desk, and the side of your

hand should face you once again, as should your thumb. The symbol for "fa" is a thumb's

down symbol with the inside of your thumb facing outward. The symbol for "so" is a flat hand

with the palm facing outward. The symbol for "la" is a cupped hand that faces downward.

The symbol for "ti" is a fist with the index finger pointing up and slightly to the left. Then,

bring your index finger back into your fist to make "do." You could attempt to master this

method by practicing it over and over to gain the ability to symbol the notes faster. This could

be an enjoyable and inspirational way to practice, as it helps to signal the notes while singing

each of them. See what works for you. :)

    8. 8

Begin with the solfegge symbol "do" while singing the pitch. Hold out this note to the

extent of your comfort. Then, sing and signal the note "re" while holding it out. Then, go back

down and sing the note "do." The object is to move on and sing from "do" to "mi," then "do"to "fa," then "do" to "so," then "do" to "la" then "do" to "ti," then "do" to "do," or as far as

    desired.

    9. 9

If none of the above work, try taking classes. You can find classes in your area online or

in your local paper.(They probably will cost money!)

  • 7/28/2019 How to be a singer

    10/21

The soft pallet should always be raised. The object is to leave as much hollow space on the

inner part of your mouth, so as to produce a sound that is round and full. Lower your tongue,

allowing it to rest on the bottom of the mouth. Elongate the jaw slightly. Your lips should form

a small, round, circular, shape. Be sure not to open your mouth too much, as it may block

the hollow passage of the roof of your mouth.

Start from an estimated guess as to what you feel the note sounds like to match pitch. Move

the pitch of your voice up and down the scale as a siren until you match the desired pitch.

You will be able to hear and feel when you meet this match.

Tuning involves singing the "target" of a note. This means singing exactly what the note

should sound like, and not singing sharp or flat. You know you are singing flat when the pitch

you are singing does not sound correct and is slightly, very slightly, lower than the note on a

piano, etc. You know you are singing sharp when your voice is producing a pitch that does

not sound correct and sounds slightly higher than the pitch you are attempting to sing on a

piano or in a song, etc. Sing a particular note while taking your index finger, and gently, very

gently, pushing it towards the center of the forehead. This seems to produce a psychological

effect on most singers to be able to hit the exact pitch. Be careful with this one if you will, being very gentle.

Chest voice is usually a deep sound produced at the lower part of one's range. Head voice is

softer and more gentle. Likewise, mask voice is a combination of the 2 and you can feel this

vibration slightly below the eyes on the bones of your cheeks when you are singing in this

register. Registers are simply the prospect of getting as many parts of your body in vibration

as you sing. You will be able to know which register you are in because there is something

called a "break" in your voice from one register to the next. Sing a note that is in the lower

end of your range. As if a siren, move the pitch you are singing upward, allowing it to rise. If

you go high enough, and depending on where you are with developing your vocal range, you

will experience a "break" in the sound of your "siren" where the vocal sound gets cut off. Thisis natural, and we all have this "break." The range of your voice before you reached this

break was sung in chest register. The sound produced after the break in a softer voice was

sung in head register. Mask voice, which is in between the 2 distinguishing principles, was

sung throughout the median pitches of your given range, before you reached the "break"

    point.

Breathe in through your nose, then plug your nose with a free hand. This is how it should

feel when you sing. Practice singing without feeling the exhalation of the breath in your nose

    while you sing.

Enunciate, or bring out, the consonants of the words in the song. You may also wish to place

    an emphasis on certain words.

Singing louder and singing softer should take the same amount of breath support, and vocal

strain should not be experienced, either way. Using diaphragmic breathing, these variations

can be controlled throughout the song. Try alternatively bringing your right and left hands

foreward, one after and over the other. This technique is used to add volume to your voice to

    sing in forte or fortissimo.

Pour your emotions into the song and use facial expressions while you sing.

    Drink plenty of water.

Pick a song suitable for your vocal range. (With notes you feel more comfortable singing.)

How to Expand Your Singing Voice Rangeedits by:DHC Smiles,Maluniu,Freckles,Imperatrix(see all)

    ArticleEditDiscussHistory

voices, but some good ones to try are: abdominal pulsing while holding a comfortable

  • 7/28/2019 How to be a singer

    13/21

each note having a different number. Once you've done this, reverse it with eight-eight-

seven-eight etc); humming a comfortable note and pitch-bending it, going a little higher/lower

    each time.

    4. 4

Learn how to sing properly BEFORE attempting to expand. Expanding your range when

you aren't comfortable working within your range is a recipe for vocal chord damage. For

example, one of the things you might learn to do is to disengage certain muscles that aren't

necessary for singing.[2]Engaging these muscles while simultaneously singing at the very

top of your range will cause strain.

    5. 5

Do vocal exercises that encourage you to "touch" the notes at the top and bottom of

your range. Do not linger at a note you aren't comfortable with. Focus on keeping your

throat relaxed, and on breathing properly.

    6. 6

Yawn. A lot. Notice the shape of your mouth, and the back of your throat, when you do. This

is the perfect position for your mouth and jaw when you sing: dropped jaw, back of mouth is

open. You get better tone (and easier high notes) when your mouth/etc are in this position.
