LANSA Composer

The solution automates updating customer data in an

ERP application running on an IBM i server with data

from a web application.

Customers maintain their data using the customer

information web application.

LANSA Composer accepts data from the web

application, reformats the data, and enters the data

into the ERP application automatically.

How to automate processes that integrate legacy applications

Current situation describes the existing processes and highlights inefficiencies, manual processes and cost concerns.

Current situation

The requirements define the processes the company would like to automate and where to enhance existing processes.

Requirements

The solution describes how LANSA Composer can be used to implement the requirements including automating the processes.

Solution

The benefits highlight measurable outcomes, e.g. process efficiency and reduced costs, derived from implementing the solution design.

Benefits

This use case is based on a customer experience using LANSA Composer to implement an automated solution that achieved tangible outcomes.

Current situation

ACME Corporation operates an ERP application, which was purchased as a software package.

The ERP system is a 5250 legacy application that runs on an IBM i server.

ACME receives advice of changes to customer data by email, paper mail, or phone calls.

Customer service staff at ACME transcribe data in emails, paper mail, or phone call notes to

update customer data using the customer module of the legacy application.

Updating customer data is a manual process and prone to error, e.g. transcription errors occur

when customer service staff enter the data. Transcription errors in addresses cause deliveries

to incorrect addresses and fixing the problem makes deliveries more expensive. The data in

email and paper mail documents is often incomplete, e.g. no zip code. Correcting the

incomplete data adds to the time required to process the updates.

How to automate processes that integrate legacy applications

Requirements

The requirements are:

1. A self-service web application where customers manage their customer data.

2. Automate updating customer data in the ERP application.

The self-service web application for managing customer data will be a new application and

separate from the legacy ERP application.

LANSA Composer will accept customer data from the self-service web application, and update

the customer data in the ERP application automatically, using the terminal service to operate

the ERP application programmatically. The terminal service imitates a person typing data using

a keyboard.

How to automate processes that integrate legacy applications

Solution: update customer data

2. The self-service web

application sends the

customer data to

LANSA Composer.

1. Customers use the self-service

web application to maintain

their customer data.

3. LANSA Composer reformats the

customer data into a stream of key

strokes, and uses the terminal service

to imitate a human operator updating

customer data in the ERP application.

How to automate processes that integrate legacy applications

Solution: customer data update processing steps

A business analyst builds the

script that LANSA Composer

uses to automatically

perform the steps required to

receive the customer data,

reformat the data for

updating the legacy

application, and send a

stream of keystrokes to the

ERP application.

How to automate processes that integrate legacy applications

Benefits realised from the automated solution

• The self-service web application reduced the customer service workload by eliminating administrative time required to fix incorrect or missing customer data

• Updated customer data is more accurate, and available as soon as customers save the changed data

• More mailed items reach the correct address thereby reducing returns and re-mailing costs

• Fewer incorrect delivery addresses reduced courier costs

LANSA Composer provides business process integration (BPI) tools used

by business analysts to automate and integrate business processes.

It is a simple, and cost-effective way to get business transactions in and

out of your business systems with less human effort.
