Middle ages
During the middle ages, bread was the
essential food in diets.

Middle ages Cereals were turned into flour by smashing them
in the windmills, which used wind power to move.
The windmills usually belonged to the nobleman in the town or village.
There where also watermills
and mills moved by animals,
such as donkeys or mules.

Middle ages
People made the dough at their homes, they made it into a special shape or made an identifying sign and they took it to be baked in the city ovens. There was a small tax to use them. During these times, the most common breads consumed in Spain were: rye bread, white bread and bread made out of flour mixtures.

Beginning of the Industrial revolution
At the ending of the 18th century, the windmills were better and the cereal production growed.
Due to that, the price of the white bread decreased. By this time, Bread was baked at
private ovens and selled by the baker.

Industrial Revolution
In the 19th century the steam windmills were invented. A new kind of yeast was made and new kneading methods were used. The bread industry started to grow quickly. They used both, coal and wood to bake the bread.
The better methods took to have whiter flour and, therefore whiter bread. Most of the people buy this bread.
