Swimming Pool?

The swimming pool may do more damage to tooth enamel than most people expect!

A study released by the College of Dentistry of New York University suggests that improperly maintained pool chlorination may cause erosion of the dental enamel. The pH balance of pool water can go below 7 (which means it’s acidic) and acid is a great dental health offender.

Maintaining Your Pool

When cleaning your pool, the very first thing you need to do is to neutralize the acid and chlorine. Go for a salt water filtration system. As much as possible, try to minimize the use of these water preservatives. You may also choose to use ozone. Better yet, invest in a professional pool service.

Don’t Eat Before Swimming

Eating provides energy to the bacteria in your mouth. Once active, these bacteria will break down in your teeth. You double the risk of sustaining tooth defects if these bacteria combine with the acidic water.

Swish

After your swim, make sure to gargle to wash away the acids that might have touched your teeth. Go organic by using oil sourced from coconut or sesame seed. Better yet, brush your teeth with baking soda.
