It has become routine for Human Resource employees to incorporate social media in their search for prospective future employees. Social media is a virtual space where we can express ourselves freely. It gives us the liberty to post intimate images of ourselves with friends, link videos that interest our political and social views and share details about our daily lives. Australia having five million active Instagram users alone and up to an astounding fifteen million on Facebook it is safe to say that the average person in Australia uses at least one social media account regularly. When searching for a job it is imperative to maintain a professional online presence. Research shows that employers prefer individuals not to post content relating to politics, religion and questionable behavior. With technological advances today, and the broad access we have to the world wide web it takes a simple search on Google by an employer to find out what you were getting up to. To assist in boosting your eligibility for a job it would be logical to maintain a positive online space to further showcase your professional brand and image.

Keep things private

Keeping safe on the internet is essential, so maintaining privacy relating to personal details like direct emails, personal phone numbers or home addresses should remain private to some degree. Having your entire profile hidden and unable to be searched could lead to further rejection by a company who may want to hire you. An employer wants to be able to see your online activity to learn a little more about you rather than going off a Skype interview, phone conversation or a written CV. You will be assessed based on the content you post on your profile, by constantly posting negative social media it will absolutely lessen your chances in being hired for your dream job, or any job at that. By allowing positive posts to be public on your profile you will be sharing a personal side of you to your employer and can provide an insight into your personal life without sharing too much. This is a positive as it allows you to show multiple sides to your personality both in a virtual online space and the work place.

Which to choose?

It is best to maintain a social media platform relative to the field of work you wish to work in. For example, an intern who is studying public relations working with a not-for-profit organisation may need media platforms such as Instagram and twitter to interconnect with likeminded professionals. The Twittersphere is a broad social media platform allowing for individuals to use hashtags and mentions to talk directly to a specific target audience or group of people. Regularly tweeting about current topics that interest you may boost your chances as it displays passions you may have to your future employer. Instagram holding a whopping five million active monthly users is another platform that can be used to your advantage when maintaining a professional space. There are many ways to maintain an Instagram profile in a professional manner, this can include themes, colour schemes and the types of likeminded professionals you follow. Posting images about getting drunk every weekend is not an ideal post on a professional profile, but posting images about personal interests and showing a positive depiction of yourself will be a great way to impress employer. LinkedIn is another platform which holds three million users in Australia, LinkedIn is considered a professional platform where you can display specific details about your past education publicly, it also gives you the ability to network with other professionals. Having a LinkedIn profile will give any employer easy access to your qualifications which will boost your chances in getting hired. So all that is left is for you to set up your professional virtual space, maintain it keeping mindful of what you project into your social media platforms! Showcase what you’ve got!
