out of that stone. Saleh took their promises that if Allah answers their challenge, theywould believe and follow him. When they gave him their oaths and promises, Salehstarted praying and invoked Allah (to produce the miracle). All of a sudden, the stonemoved and broke apart, producing a she-camel with thick wool. It was pregnant and itsfetus was visibly moving in its belly, exactly as Saleh's people had asked {5}

Instead of carefully evaluating the message of Prophet Saleh, the people of Thamud insolentlyasked for a further miracle of a she-camel as proof. After the people of Thamud promised that

they would believe if such a miracle were to come about, a she-camel suddenly appearedexactly as they had demanded. As acceptance of the miracle, the Creator had asked that noharm should come to the she-camel. However, despite the miracle, the arrogance of theThamud people did not allow them to believe. How did they continue to demonstrate theirinsolence?

7.74 "And remember how He made you inheritors after the Ad people and gaveyou habitations in the land: you build for yourselves palaces and castles in(open) plains and carve out homes in the mountains; so bring to remembrancethe benefits (you have received) from Allah and refrain from evil and mischief onthe earth."In addition, the people of Thamud were not only reminded of the blessings of the Creator interms of superior habitation {3}, they were reminded that the people of Ad {3} were destroyedfor similar insolence. Some believed. However, those who were arrogant questioned thebelievers and continued to treat Saleh insolently,

7.75 The leaders of the arrogant party among his people asked those whobelieved: "Do you indeed know that Saleh is an apostle from his Lord?"Theysaid: "We do indeed believe in the Revelation which has been sent through him."Some believed in Salihs message. However,

7.76 The arrogant party said: "For our part we reject what you believe in."

7.77 Then they ham-strung the she-camel and insolently defied the order of theirLord saying: "O Saleh! Bring about your threats if you are an apostle (of Allah)!"They killed the she-camel by first crippling the animal and insolently continued to challengeProphet Saleh. At this point, what do you think the Creators response would be?

7.78 So the earthquake took them unawares and they lay prostrate (dead) in theirhomes in the morning!

So their Lord on account of their crime obliterated their traces [91.14]

7.79 So Saleh left them saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you themessage for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel but you lovenot good advisors!"
