Rotary’s programs are developing the next generation of leaders providing funding to make the world a better place

and making peace a priority

Rotary Peace Fellow Linda Low could not have known what world events would bring when she took a position as the communications manager for the Europe region of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 2015.

• Shortly after she started her new job, the migration crisis began to overwhelm Europe. • Low saw the waves of migrants and heard their stories firsthand. • This challenging experience sparked her desire to help communities in conflict and

ultimately led Low to the Rotary Peace Center at Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is studying the connection between the environment and peace.

• Low spoke on 10 February at a conference on environmental sustainability and peace hosted by RI President Ian H.S. Riseley in Vancouver, B.C.

• This was the first of six presidential peace building conferences in locations around the world between February and June, focusing on the connection between building peace and Rotary’s areas of focus.

• She is a communicator by trade, starting in corporate communications but always volunteering with the Red Cross in Vancouver. Over time she realized her values really aligned personally with the work they do: disaster relief but and building stronger communities.

• Over six years at the Red Cross Red Crescent, again and again as during responses to crises, words that kept coming up were “climate change.”

• In the Syrian crisis, drought was in rural areas, and farmers moved into the urban centers where they were competing for limited resources. She remembers that to be part of it, she must go back and tackle climate change.

• With the gift of a generous scholarship from The Rotary Foundation, she had opportunity to go to Duke and study the nexus between policy, environment, climate change, and community.

• One focus is the link between food waste and climate change. As food rots in landfills it creates methane, which is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases. In the developed world, we all waste food.

• If I don’t waste one banana, that’s not a great impact, but if everyone in my community, everyone in my state doesn’t waste, then there is greater impact.

• Everything I have learned here is elevating my game. Coming into this program I could write a great story that could bring you to tears, but I did not understand the science and economics behind it. Now I understand science and economics. I can bring that holistic view to drive solutions that are truly sustainable.

Wednesday the 11th, is our second meeting for April of 2018 and we are preparing for the Silent Auction on Saturday of this week. We are also celebrating (and supporting) the Rotary Foundation, the services it offers and acknowledging the great accomplishments it has achieved. May we continue to carry the Foundation through its the second century of function.

We continue to live in the Spirit of Rotary theme for this year: “Rotary, Making a Difference.”

At our expressed level of purpose, we continue to attend to our work with Community Mental Health Issues by providing awareness and education to be reflected as a change in our interpersonal and social environments. We will demonstrate some of the ways to make a difference in the level of good mental health in our community while on a path to achieve this goal. In this way we will create a measurable result. Our speaker this week is Brenda Tusing and Ramone, presenting his Small Business Focus: The Royal Chocolate and Ramone Photography. Please pass on ideas to LouAnn to identify topics for future discussions in the upcoming months.

Your continued involvement and support enables us to provide services to those we have committed to serve as we continue to look at the effects of mental health issues on our community, the nation and the world. By applying the knowledge we gain, we continue to work towards building public awareness of these issues and initiating programs that support mental wellness locally, nationally and world wide.

Please continue to support our Rotaract Club on 2nd & 4th Mondays of the month at 7:00 pm at the New River Taphouse, 1716 Pleasure House Rd #101, Va. Beach. Chris and John will continue to attend our meetings as fellow Rotarians.

I invite you to join us weekly and participate in these and all of the events of the club, that we may continue to be successful in meeting our mission throughout 2018.

- Pat Edwards, President, Rotary Club of Town Center

• Items should have a monetary value that makes them attractive Unusual items, collectables, and items of local historical importance are very welcome for the event

• Ticket sales are almost done- please buy yours and sell more to your friends and acquaintances

A message from DG John Padgett – April 2018Rotary International President Ian Riseley has challenged Rotarians to plant 1.2 million trees. The tree planting challenge has been accepted by many clubs in District 7600. Holes have been dug, trees have been purchased and Rotarians have invested in providing shade and environmental sustainability to the next generation. The tree challenge is a great example of Rotarians getting their hands dir ty and working to make a difference in the lives of individuals that we may not know personally. Ever y day Rotarians “pay it for ward” and make our communities a better place to live and to raise families.

District 7600 is in the process of soliciting District Grants for Rotary year 2018-19. The District has a strong legacy of using District grants to make an impact. Yet, a successful grant requires planning, attendance at a Grants Management Seminar, additional financial suppor t and inspired leadership. Unfor tunately, every year Grant applications are rejected because a club has not met a threshold requirement for a successful application. It could be that the Club failed to submit a Memorandum of Understanding. Alternatively, it could be that no one from the Club attended a Grants Management Seminar in the months leading up to the Grant submission. Lastly, a club’s submission is rejected because it failed to close out prior grants by submitting the necessary documents for audit purposes. We are all frustrated when an excellent grant is not successful due to a technical requirement. We all see the oppor tunity missed to make a difference in the community.

As the May 15, 2018 District Grant deadline approaches, I would encourage you to think boldly about how to make a difference. I would encourage you to make cer tain that your club has registered for the upcoming webinar. I would challenge you to carefully review the requirements for a successful grant application. If you have a question or want to improve your grant application, tap into the experience within the District. It is impor tant that District 7600 continues to make a difference in our communities. The District Grant process is an excellent method to change our communities and to plant trees that the next generation will rely on to provide shade and other resources. Do not miss an oppor tunity to be a change agent and to grow Rotar y’s impact in District 7600 by submitting a successful grant application.
