How PR differs from Media Relations

• Public Relations and Media Relations are often used interchangeably. But are they the same? No. The lines may have been blurred between the two since the age of the Internet, though there are some big differences between Public Relations and Media Relations.

• Public Relations • The Public Relations Society of America defines

PR as “Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their public’s.” Here publics include customers, prospects, investors, community members, employees and competitors. It includes anyone who is affected by the business’ activities.

• Public Relations uses strategic actions to portray an organization’s point of view, shaping the brand’s image in the minds of the public.

• Media Relations • Media Relations is the organization’s

communication with the media. The channel of media can be newspaper, television, radio and the internet. Basically, media relations is a subcategory of Public Relations. Through the different channels and outlets, the media works in building strong tie with the media and communicate the organization’s key messages, story and information to the public.

• How are they different? • While both Public Relations and Media Relations

play a significant role in the growth of the business in terms of immediate and long-term benefits, their focus is different.

• While Media Relations communicates only with the media, Public Relations work with different publics of the organization. So these terms cannot be interchangeable.

• Have a clear idea about both these terms and build a clever and strong strategy, implementing both Public Relations and Media Relations to receive better benefits.
