How Omega Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph Works

Omega Speedmaster is one of the well-known and most appreciated collections Worldwide.

It is a master device when someone is looking for a perfect time keeping machine. The

brand Omega has various collections named Speedmaster, Seamaster, Constellation, De

Ville etc.

In the Omega’s maximum timepieces, a co-axial calibre acts as the chief source of power.

These types of watches are automatic, also known as self-winding. The self-winding

chronograph moves because of column wheel mechanism and Co-Axial escapement. In a

self-winding watch like Omega Co-Axial, the timepiece works through certain steps,

described below –

The regular oscillations are measured by determining the frequency of movement

with the help of the regulating organ

The Pallet fork and Co-Axial Escapement Wheel then interrupt the rotation of the

gear train and send impulse at regular intervals to the regulating organ.

With the help of interconnected gears, the gear train transmits the energy to the co-

axial escapement & turns the hands of the timepiece.

Movement of the pallet fork is limited on either side by the solid banking, placed on

the pallet fork bridge.

When entry pallet unlocks the tooth, it sends impulse to the roller pallet & then exit

pallet unlocks the tooth, which again sends impulse to the lever impulse pallet –

The whole process repeats repeatedly, which keeps the watch moving. The total

functionality is known as ‘Automatic’, because, the mainspring wounds automatically

because of the movement of the wearer’s arm.

The Co-Axial escapement reduces friction in the movement that results in a superb long-

term chronometric performance. The anchors are equipped with three ruby pallet

stones weighing four thousandths of a gram. A three level Co-Axial escapement wheel is

designed to bear more than half a billion strains each year, which is further supported by

a silicon balance spring with a weight of one-seventh of a grain of rice. The almost

impossible Co-Axial technology has been implemented by the master craftsmen and

innovators of Omega with the help of their state of art instruments and technologies. It

became a turning point in the history of mechanical watch making. Omega proved that

they could go to any extent to maintain precision and perfection in time keeping.
