Ohio Energy Project

The Complete Energy Education Picture

What is NEED?

About OEP Mission: To promote an energy-educated society and to facilitate leadership, through effective partnerships with

schools, businesses, government and communities.AWARDS

• 2002 Governor's Award for Contributions to EnergySmart Communities

• 2001 National Energy Champion by the U. S. Department of Energy

• 2001 State Program of the Year by National Energy Education Development

• BEST Practice in Education by Ohio Business Roundtable • Top 12 Environmental Education Program by Ohio EPA • Recommended by the PUCO in The Ohio Energy Strategy

Report • 501 (c) (3) organization with exceptional outreach since 1984 • Professional staff of 5, including Southwest Ohio office • Excellent reputation for sound financial management and

growth

"Kids Teaching Kids" OEP's unique approach

• Facilitates youth leadership, teamwork and presentation skills

• Reaches hundreds of teachers and thousands of students/families each year

• A cornerstone of the Ohio Energy Project is helping students develop important leadership, teamwork and presentation skills. Student leaders from grades 8-12 receive training on energy and leadership concepts and the workshop activities they will facilitate with OEP staff at Energy Fairs and Workshops in their districts or areas.

"The OEP Workshops I participated in were incredible, because they really made learning about energy fun. Most importantly, OEP gives kids the gift of leadership and a chance to have a real impact on the world around them". -- Matt Steele, former student participant

• Outreach:Each year OEP reaches thousands of students and families directly and many more indirectly as a result of the "Kids Teaching Kids" approach.

Programs and Materials from OEP and NEED

• Unbiased, complete information, customized to many disciplines

• Innovative, hands-on educational activities and techniques • Content includes sources of energy, transformation, electricity,

efficiency • Complete package - for teachers or teachers and students • Promotes success on the (Ohio) Proficiency Test, in many

classrooms and in life • Develops awareness about energy, science, and technology • Teacher Partnerships - FREE curriculum materials for teachers

who register • Programs and Materials• Many FREE Resources for Teachers

• Programs include professional development and workshops for teachers and students throughout Ohio featuring:

Customized Professional Development based upon your   district's curriculum objectives and proficiency needs in many   disciplines

Energy Workshops and Fairs for teachers and students   (grades 4-8) including all major energy concepts

Energy Bike Workshops for teachers, providing this fantastic   teaching tool to the school district, along with many incentives for the   teachers

Energy Bike ProgramsWhat is an Energy Bike?

• One of the most powerful and successful teaching tools available

• A bicycle equipped with a zero air pollution (ZAP) generator and attached to an electrical board

How does it work? • Pedal power generates electricity to power incandescent and

fluorescent light bulbs, a radio, tape player, fan and hair dryer • Allows the rider to sense their energy being transformed and to

trace the energy flow back to the sun • Captures the attention of students of all learning styles:• Visual learners see how energy changes forms • Kinesthetic learners feel the energy • Auditory learners hear the explanations of energy

transformation • Verbal learners observe and tell others • Logical-mathematical learners understand the measurements

of energy use, using the equation Volts x Amps = Watts.

Energy Bike

How can my school get an Energy Bike?

• Energy Bikes are often sponsored for school districts by area companies, organizations, etc. The Complete Energy Bike Package (bike, electrical board, roller case, appliances, and training materials and session) costs approximately $5,000. OEP would be happy to discuss ways that your district might obtain this fantastic teaching tool. Districts interested should contact OEP.

• What are others saying about the Energy Bike Program?

"There is no match out there for this workshop. Thank you for supporting teachers' efforts on so many levels. I'm so impressed with OEP's stellar educators and their dedication and drive." --- Missy Zender, Summit County ESC

• The Energy Bike Program has been recognized by the Ohio EPA and Environmental Education Council of Ohio (EECO) as one of the Top 12 Environmental Education Programs in Ohio over the last decade.

• · EnergySmart Schools Workshops for those interested in   improving the learning environment, while saving energy and money

• Are your classrooms too hot or too cold? Do your students have proper lighting to be effective learners? Is the air quality in your school of concern to you? Ohio Energy Project was chosen by the U.S.Department of Energy’s Rebuild America Program to develop Ohio's EnergySmart Schools Program (OESSP).

• OESSP provides many materials and programs for teachers and/or students to improve the learning environment in schools while saving energy and money, utilizing the school building as a learning laboratory.

• OESSP helps reduce school energy consumption and costs by empowering teachers and students to make sustainable energy choices and affecting the attitudes and behaviors of teachers, students and staff about energy conservation.

• Request OEP's booklet entitled Ohio's EnergySmart Schools: Creating a Sustainable Learning Environment in Ohio, which describes activities for students of all age levels.

Ohio's EnergySmart Schools Program

EnergySmart Schools• OEP staff will work with teachers and administrators to design a

program tailored to your district's curricular needs and efficiency improvement plans.

• OESSP will empower students and teachers to be involved in improving their learning environment and student performance in science.

Types of activities available through the OESSP Action Plan:

• Energy Audits and Comfort Surveys of buildings to determine where the building's energy efficiency and learning environment can be improved.· Signing an EnergySmart Schools Contract encourages students to reduce the amount of energy they use everyday.· Waste Audits that demonstrate where waste occurs in your building and ways to improve the situation with cooperative action.· Supporting Ohio Schools Going Solar, complete with a solar array that generates electricity and serves as a powerful teaching tool.

• Welcome to EnergyPatrol.Org, the website for Ohio's EnergySmart Schools Program. On this site, you can do the following:

• · Read about the latest developments with Ohio's EnergySmart Schools Programs (OESSP).· Submit a news story or announcement to this page.

· View the energy usage and patterns of various schools (see View Data).· Register an Energy Patrol team at your school (see Edit School).· Check out our lesson plans that use the actual energy data collected on this site to teach science and energy concepts to your students (see Teacher's Links). · Primary Workshops featuring This Mine of Mine, a great hands on   activity about electricity from coal and reclaiming the land
