How is Bulletproof Glass Created?

Bulletproof glass, also known as ballistic glass, bullet-resistant glass or transparent armour is defined as, ‘a

type of strong but optically transparent material that is

particularly resistant to being penetrated when struck.’

This being said, the glass is not impenetrable and to understand how it can be used one first must understand

how it is made.

Composition of Bulletproof GlassBulletproof glass is made out of at least one

hard glass and one soft glass at the beginning of construction. The soft glass provides the elasticity necessary to allow the glass to flex

instead of shattering when struck.

The ‘index of refraction’ for all types of glass must be as close to equal as possible. Most

bulletproof glass is transparent and offers the protected client an unobstructed, undistorted view of their own surroundings. Bulletproof glass is usually between 1/3 inches and 3.5

inches in thickness.




Construction of Bulletproof Glass

Commonly, bulletproof glass is constructed by using polycarbonate thermoplastic and layers of laminated glass. The combination of these two

allows the bulletproof glass to hold the same clarity as ordinary glass. The most common

polycarbonate designs are Makroclear, Armormax, Tufflax, Cyrolon and Lexan.

Once the combination of polycarbonate glass and layered regular glass are heated, cooled and treated with a variety of chemical processes, the

glass is made strong enough to resist objects.




Construction of Bulletproof GlassSilicon-based polymers hold anti-abrasion

qualities and are hard coatings. An advantage of these are that they’re resistant

to blunt instrument assaults with objects such as hammers, axes, crowbars and clubs.

The ability of bulletproof glass is highly connected to how thick the product is. The

thicker the glass, the more resistant it will be. The glass serves to flatten the object/bullet, therefore diminishing its ability to penetrate

the surface.




Testing StandardsBulletproof glass is primarily tested

by firing a gun from a predetermined distance at the

surface of the product.

The newest class of bulletproof class is being developed and used by the

US military and is known as ALON. ALON is stronger and

lighter than traditional bulletproof surfaces.




Environmental ExposureEffective bulletproof glass must be resistant to

nature, for example sun, water, wind and snow. On top of this, modern bulletproof glass

is also designed to resist chemicals and solvents. It can also serve to protect from UV

radiation.

Regular maintenance is essential as the lifespan of polymer isn’t as long as you may

expect. The glass can become brittle and lose its flexibility meaning it isn’t as effective as

before.
