How I made the Poster

Page 2: How I made the Poster

Aware that there were no really good poster images from our trailer that sold the idea, I did a photography shoot. My idea was a light bulb smashed (symbolic of the lights gone), trying different compositions with the glass splayed out, exposed wires and with a lit match.

This is where I played around with initial ideas. The smashed glass would have been good as its still makes the round shape but then it would be distracting from the text. I tried a cut out of the light bulb so I could possible blend it with another image (flames perhaps?) but the wires were too fiddly and small me to select it without losing quality. I like the end one that is only colour edited, keeping the aqua background.

Inserting the previously made Facebook and twitter logo and the production companies made it more of a reference for the audience to find out more. I used the same font as in the trailer (futurist fixed width) from dafont to keep the media products holistic. I wanted large text, which was restricted with the font and the delicate blub behind to really catch people attentions but then I realised that the poster just looked like a teaser poster, not a full one. To combat this, I included screengrabs of the trailer, highlighting the characters, exciting scene and it handheld camera nature. This also gave more information about the film, other than a mysterious bulb. In order to make the poster more like professional pieces, I created the ‘blurb’ (cast and crew) out of the official font. Fortunately it was pointed out to me that the name of our film wasn’t even on the poster, it seems I didn’t even notice. Therefore I made the slogan ‘the blackout is coming’ smaller and put in the title.
