How have advances in transportation and

communications and transnational corporations made

Globalisation possible?

Structure for SEQ Factor• Intro: Identify all three factors + state argument

briefly• Para 1: Examine how given factor has

contributed to the issue. PEAL• Para 2: Examine how other factor 1 has

contributed to the issue. PEAL• Para 3: Examine how other factor 2 has

contributed to the issue. PEAL• Conclusion: Weigh the three factors. Explain

(with reference to all three factors) why a particular factor is “the most important.”

“the most important” (very vague term)You need to provide a criterion to define “most

important”

Globalisation is not a new phenomenon in that previous in the past societies, people from

various parts of the world did establish trading links etc.

What is new is basically the

(i) SCOPE (Almost all countries affected by Globalisation)

(ii) SPEED (Very rapid)

Need to define Globalisation

• Globalisation: Process by which people, their ideas and activities in different parts of the world become interconnected or integrated.

• How do advances in transportation, communications and TNCs make greater connectivity/integration possible amongst people in different parts of the world?

Page 5: How have advances in transportation and communications and transnational corporations made Globalisation possible? Textbook p. 49

Advances in transportation

• Define/Explain advances in transportation• Give examples of advances in

transportation.• Give analysis: How has the example that

you illustrated contribute to improving connectivity and therefore making Globalisation possible? (link back to issue)

• Do the same for the other factors.

Page 6: How have advances in transportation and communications and transnational corporations made Globalisation possible? Textbook p. 49

Conclusion

• What is the relationship between the factors?

• Which is most fundamental in making globalisation possible?

Analysis

• Advances in transportation allow people and goods to be more mobile, as they are able to move between different places in a shorter amount of time. It has also opened up previously inaccessible areas and have helped to put them on the global map. This in turns promotes greater connectivity due to the increasing ease of travel, which has made both the scope and the speed of Globalisation possible.

Analysis

• Advances in Communications have led to greater mobility in ideas, and thus the spread of ideas from one part of the world to another. With the advent of the internet, people are increasingly able to be connected to a shared online community, which has in turn helped to create a global identity which has made Globalisation – and the creation of a ‘global village’ possible.

Analysis

• TNCs in their search for new markets and cheap resources (labour + raw materials) to maximise profits have helped to make the world a smaller place, as one economy becomes increasingly dependent on another for raw materials or markets. It is one of the key driving forces of globalisation, as it stands the most to gain from this economic connectivity.

Relationship• TNCs are the products of advances in transportation and

communications, and in turn has reinforced them. • Advances in transportation have made the transfer of

technology possible, which is the pre-requisite to advances in communications. Moreover, mobility of people and goods have also made communications among people in different locations faster and more convenient.

• While all factors are important, the most important would be the advances in transportation, which is the primary/underlying factor as it made the advances of communication possible (through the transfer of specialists and optical fibres) and the transfer of personnel needed for the establishment of overseas branches for TNCs, which have in turn made globalisation possible.
