How Effective Is the Combination Of Your Main Product And Ancillary Texts
Chris Joyce
Our Main ProductOur main product is obviously the music video. It is the biggest proportion of our
brief and we spent the relative proportion of our time in producing it.
The whole point of the video is to compliment the song and help promote it. We went about this by creating a fun, light-hearted and energetic video, which transmitted an enjoyable message to the
audience. After the video, we had to create a digipak and an advert (ancillary products), and
we wanted these to continue some of the themes of the video and song. We also wanted these to
look as professional as possible, looking like other indie music digipaks and adverts.
DIGIPAKFor our Digipak we focused a lot on the individual images that we wanted to use. We also decided that we wanted to have a band logo that reflected both the band and the song at the same time. As well as this, we wanted a caricature that would identify out band and song straight away. Both of these are shown below;
The 1984 Logo (magnifying glass) was featured in the digipak. The band
name relates to the band as a whole and the magnifying glass relates
directly to the video.
This is the caricature that we created. We didn’t want too much
detail but knew that we wanted it to have green eyes, in order to relate
back to the video, and we both agreed on this simple but effective
‘green splat’
DIGIPAK
DIGIPAKAs you can see on the previous slide, our digipak continues the ‘Green’ theme, which relates back to the song and its lyrics, so we accomplished that quite early on. We decided to use fluorescent green on black background, or the opposite way round. We did that so as to make a harsh colour clash, but also to keep the edges of the images defined. This is best seen on the “green splat” image. The eye-catching colour would make the digipak and CD stand out on a shelf in a shop, and would attract the attention more than most other digipaks. The colour is quite outlandish and captivating, the same of which can be said about the indie genre of music. It is entertaining and ‘out there’ and we have reflected that in our digipak well.
Overall, our digipak matches and compliments the video and song really well and is therefore very effective. WE are very pleased with this outcome.
DIGIPAKS – COMPARISON
ADVERTAs we did with our digipak we wanted our advert to mirror the Green theme. We also wanted to use a picture of the band as we hadn’t done that much up to this point, and it is often done by real media products. This would also give the advert a bit of a personal touch, using images of ourselves, and would perhaps give the audience a better connected feeling. We took numerous photos and ended up with the shot below;
ADVERTAfter using our new-found Photoshop skills, we added:
• A green tint and gave a slight staggered zoom effect•Text that suited the title ‘Green Eyed Monster’ •A picture of the digipak at the bottom so as people know what to look for if they wanted to purchase our product.
We think that all of this information together proved very effective with many saying, upon
questioning, that looking at both the digipak and the advert, they suited the song and video very
well and that they would definitely consider buying the product. SUCCESS!
