How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?Evaluation 2

• It is important that the combination of my main product and ancillary task have links to each other to create a strong brand identity. The 2 products must work together through similarities. For example

Mise en scene• Location- I feel the locations I have used are a

main aspect that allows my video to have strong connotation with the genre I have chosen. I used the country side, fields and a farm house. I also used an old fashioned train station, this was appropriate to use as it fits to the old fashioned style. George Ezra's music has a soulful feel, which is stereotypically not a modern kind of music. I decided to use the field for the ancillary task as this is a location in my music video additionally this is his home and where he looks most relaxed. His posture against the tree also accompanies this relaxed impression and he is holding the guitar. Similarly in the music video he has brought his girl friend here where he looks happy and in love. This is a convention of love story which is not stereotypically a convention of the rock/folk/blues genre. I used London as another location, I love that these locations are completely different and he is moving away from a relaxed old fashioned environment to a busy new environment where there are a lot of opportunities. These locations being so different can be an inspiration to the target audience who are of the age where they are moving away from home to a new place in their life's.

• Therefore the combination of my main task and ancillary task are effective as I have used the sae location throughout and I feel I chose to use the right location from the story and emotions the field location conveys.

• Clothing – the clothing worn throughout the music video is constant, similarly he is wearing the same clothing in the ancillary task. The clothing that he is wearing is smart casual, the jumper is plain not taking away the attention from George or his music and assist the idea that he is a easy going guy who doesn’t buy expensive clothing. The jumper is knitted and his jacket is smart. Both of them are current however the brown knitted jumper has a slightly older style. George Ezra is cleanly shaven which is a convention of a folk/blues genre. It shows that he is professional and respectable to what he does.

• My tasks are successful in working together as the clothing is the same and he looks approachable in both.

• Facial expression- in all 3 products George has a serious facial expression, he looks welcoming and respectable as well as having a thought provoking expression. This facial expression shows he takes his music career seriously, because it gives the impression to the audience that he is thoughtful about he work and spends time developing what he does. Especially in his music video he isn’t going to be really happy because he is moving away from his family but he is moving away for his girlfriend and for this new career where he can peruse his music in a more competitive area. The fast pace edits and parts of happy moments support this idea.

• Props- Something I realised after I had filmed my music video was that there are parts at the station when George and his girlfriend are saying goodbye to his parents. This is the part where they don’t have their bags, if I had more time I would have re film this. However I don’t feel like this is a major problem. I used the same prop in my ancillary task and the main product. This prop was the guitar which gives a sense musical credibility. Throughout my videos the guitar is features. There are close up images of the guitar making it a focal point in the video. In these shots George is playing it showing his diverse talent.

Camera shots• Throughout the music video I

used a wide range of shot types, camera angles and camera movement. A few examples are CU, MS, OTS, LS, pan, zoom, high angle. My work was effective as a combination due to using a LS on the inside f the cd cover similar to the LS used in my music video. Likewise the cover image and magazine image was a MS. The media shot was also a different image from the music video but I looks as if he has just stopped recording his music video and now is just relaxed playing on his own.

Font• A house style that I have carried through my

work is the font style. The font George Ezra uses on his real products is large and in block form therefore I have chosen to use this in my work to follow the house style he has create. This is written on all his adverts, CDs and music video. Therefore to ensure my work is effectively conveying the conventions I used this font as well throughout. The additional font I used was similar and was still in capitals. This style of font conveys a masculine identity. Stereotypically this would only appeal to the male audience but George Ezra's target audience are passionate music listeners and don’t fit to the stereotypes of boys and girls. The size of Ezra compares to George is large. He just uses his name which shows he is an ordinary guy however the name Ezra is quite unique therefore putting this in large you see it first and think ‘Ezra oh I know that’s George Ezra, the guy with the really soulful voice.’

Colours • Similarly to the font it is important to convey a house

style throughout. Therefore I used red which conformed to the brand identity that in real life George Ezra has created for himself. I got red from his current cover and advert where red and black are the dominant colours. Red is stereotypically a colour that is used for rock artists. The black and white image along side the red work really well. I don’t necessarily feel that the red is as effective as everything else I have talked about so far. Due to there not being a colour scheme in the video. I could have gotten ‘George’ to wear a red jumper to assist it. Or the title at the beginning could have been red. However it shows a house style between the cd cover and the magazine advert.

• In the music video there is an old fashioned element, from the car to the old house and old style train station. Therefore the effect I have used on the images for my ancillary task creates a modern while being having a vintage style. This is something I feel works effectively in creating a link between all three products.

Things that I feel are ineffective as a combination of my ancillary task and main product:• Throughout my research and planning I have been

conscious about appealing to the target audience. And I feel I have been effective in creating this. Nevertheless looking back at my ancillary task I have not included a crucial element which would appeal to my target audience. This element is the uses of cross media, I could have inserted the logos of firms where you can pre order his album, this would appeal to the target audience as they are the age where they download most of their music and shop online. Example of logos I could have included are, Blink Box, amazon and iTunes.

• Another element which I feel is ineffective is the use of a bad quality camera, this has caused the music video to look a lot less professional then it could do, if it was recorded using a high quality camera. This is something that is ineffective in the combination of my work as the quality of the photo that I have used for my ancillary task has a good quality unlike my music video. If I were to recreate my music video I would film the video on a DSLR.

• Along with the bad quality camera it didn’t help that I didn’t use any lighting. So in parts it is very dark. On day where it was sunny when I filmed it would have looked fine. It was sunny on the day I shot my ancillary pictures.
