How does your media product

represent particular social groups?

Surroundings

The film has been set in a council estate as we felt this would sufficiently display the conventional social realism setting. The white house represents the name given to our film, “White City” as the houses in this council estate are mainly white.

The cars shown in the background are not expensive, showy cars, so this portrays the working class setting.

The messy environment surrounding the house represents a lack of superiority in how the household represent themselves to the community. The untidy driveway, with packets of food and cardboard cluttering in a pile shows a typical working class surrounding.

Clothes being thrown out of the house in a disorganised manner, and the mothers yelling at the daughter show a typical convention of British realism films. The shouting shows a lack of respect for households around the characters house, and gives the impression this is an argument that has been built up and has reached it’s climax. In a middle class area arguments would not typically be seen

outside as families would not want other people being able to interfere in their disagreements .The fact this argument takes place outside is significant as it shows the characters do not care about who gets involved around them. The forceful manner in which the two speak and behave to/with each other shows there does not appear to be an obvious sign of discipline and hierarchy in the relationship, which would typically be seen in a middle class mother/daughter relationship .

Costumes

The outfit of the teenager is a simple, casual look which shows no apparent signs caring much about the way she looks or represents herself. The makeup is a stereotypical “chav” look-bright foundation, heavy blusher and a lot of dark eye makeup.

The mother is dressed in her dressing gown and pyjamas, which is an outfit seen in British realism films such as “Fish Tank” –showing it is a typical convention of a British realism film.
