How are you appealing to youth culture?

Headphones are now a ubiquitous sight in public and many youths use them to listen to music on iPods, mobile phones and other gadgets. The symbol is relevant to a music magazine and also appeals to young people who use technology. In my audience feedback, one audience member made a comment about the illustration having appeal to a younger audience, which I agree with. The website address also emphasises the importance of the internet in youth culture as a tool for finding out information and communication.

How are you representing different social groups?

In this photograph, the body language represents youth as casual, informal and relaxed. The people in the photograph are portrayed as ‘down to earth’ and relatable, which links to the audience’s need to be able to establish a personal identity with the artists featured in the publication.Furthermore, facial expressions in the photography show that the group of people are confident while costume conveys informality. The white background implies a sense of exclusivity, which directly caters to the needs of a young audience who feel the need to stand out amongst the rest of society. In addition to this, the photography represents a racially diverse group of young people. This would be a fitting representation of young people from a cosmopolitan area such as London.

What links can you make between your own and real media products?

Female artists in NME and my own magazine are shown with neutral expressions and are represented as being calm yet confident in their body language. They are represented in a manner that is appropriate for the genre- the costumes worn are different to those seen on female artists in hip hop or r’n’b magazines, for instance.
