Learning About Our Water

The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is the largest in the United States, spanning across more than 64,000 square miles and six states: Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia; and the District of Columbia.

The water that flows out of your tap protects public health, offers fire protection and supports the economy and overall quality of life in Prince William County.

The water used every day in homes and businesses is the same water that was on our planet millions of years ago. Water is constantly recycled!

Only 3% of the Earth’s water is considered fresh water — as opposed to salt — and only 1% of that is drinkable. That is why drinking water and water reclamation facilities are essential to ensuring that the water we use every day is safe for you and return to the environment.

Throughout the Enviroscape® Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment model presentation, students will be able to trace the path of water:

From the source waters of the river to the drinking water treatment plant;

From the water treatment plant to houses and commercial buildings; and

From homes and businesses to the water reclamation facility and back to the rivers and streams.

Other learning objectives with this presentation include:

Groundwater and septic systems; and

Stormwater that flows directly into waterways

Hands-on, interactive and fun!

Adaptable to a variety of grade levels, ages and events.

Addresses the following Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) for Science.
