Jamestown

• In April 1607, the first permanent English settlement is established in North America.

• It is financed by a Joint-Stock CompanyJoint-Stock Company called the London Company.

• Location of the colony was chosen poorly. It was located near marshes. (Disease) and many of the colonists lacked the skills necessary for this environment.

John Smith 1608

• The colony began to recover after John Smith took control. He forced settlers to adapt to their situation. He made them work harder and build better shelters.

• Winter of 1609, was the starving timestarving time. Jamestown was in trouble of failing again until an individual by the name of John RolfeJohn Rolfe came to Jamestown.

John Rolfe

• John RolfeJohn Rolfe will make Jamestown profitable because he brings with him a new type of TobaccoTobacco. This cash crop would led to the colony’s success.

• He will later marry PocahontasPocahontas daughter of the Powhatan Indians. This will improve Native American relations for a period of time.

New England ColoniesPilgrims and Puritans

• PuritansPuritans: They were a Protestant group that wanted to purify (reform) the Anglican Church.

• PilgrimsPilgrims: They were a Separatist group that left England because of religious persecution.

The Mayflower Compact

• When the Pilgrims landed in present day Massachusetts, they established a set of laws.

• Those laws were called the Mayflower Mayflower Compact.Compact.

• This colony would be known as the Plymouth Colony.

Massachusetts Bay Colony

• This was a colony established by Puritans.

• It’s leader was John WinthropJohn Winthrop.

• The Great Migration (1629-1640) thousand of men, woman and children leave England because of religious reasons and debt.

Rhode Island

• Roger WilliamsRoger Williams – He established the settlement of Providence, which would later become Rhode Island.

• Separation of Church and StateSeparation of Church and State – Government and the Church should separated from each other.

• Anne Hutchinson – One of the first woman to challenge church authority. She was put on trial for this and then asked to leave.

Middle ColoniesColony of Pennsylvania

• The QuakersThe Quakers (The Society of Friends) they believed in the equality of men and woman, equality of men and woman, nonviolence, opposed slavery and believed in nonviolence, opposed slavery and believed in religious tolerance.religious tolerance.
