To facilitate this effort, the IMSC hosted a team from the Centre for Mental Health and Addiction (CAMH) in Toronto, Canada, from May 29-31. CAMH, which has already implemented the Cerner Millenium EHR, shared lessons learned from its implementation experience with many of the Proj- ect Val Work Groups as well as the Executive Team. As Canada’s largest mental health teaching hospital, CAMH has more than 3,000 staff and provides outstanding clinical care to more than 34,000 patients per year. CAMH has developed innovative new health promotion and prevention strategies and advocates on public policy issues. Where are we going? The next major milestone is Future State System Validation 1, scheduled for June 12-14. projects in patient care, research, training, education and operations. Through modest but meaningful support, staff will be assisted in exploring a new idea or process, taking an existing idea to the next level, consulting with a subject-matter expert to design a solution, leveraging seed funding or other innovative endeavors. Emphasis will be placed on novel and collaborative solutions that capitalize on creating new oppor-tunities or addressing known challenges. The fund will provide competitive grants to individuals or teams. Individuals may apply for a grant in the range of $1 to $3,000. One or two exceptional projects that focus on collaboration may receive funding up to $5,000. The dead-line for submissions is July 31. Additional information will be available on The Link early this month.

Kudos to Faculty Members• Justin Coffey, MD, is the new Vice President of the Inter-national Society for ECT and Neurostimulation for the next two years. He was elected to the post at last month’s annual meeting. • The Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine recently honored faculty members. Shweta Sharma, PsyD, and Devi Bhuyan, PsyD, were recognized for their five years of service. George Bombel, PhD, was named outstanding educational consultant, and Michelle Patriquin, PhD, was selected outstanding mentor.• Mike McClam, MD, has been elected to Baylor’s Faculty Senate, effective July 1.

Key Faculty & Staff Positions Filled• Elisabeth Netherton, MD, has joined the Hope team this month as a staff psychiatrist. • Dr. Michelle Patriquin has hired Afsoon Gazor and Kieran Paddock as new senior research coordinators.

FarewellsMenninger extends its best wishes on new endeavors for Deb Bordelon who retired at the end of May, to Bleny Canales who recently retired from The Gathering Place, to Carlos DeJesus who departed for a new position early last month and to Deb Renneker who is leaving this month to care for a family member.

Menninger Honors Nursing StaffCongratulations to Len Calderon, BSN, RN, Charge Nurse on CPAS, and Peggy Parker, BSN, RN-BC, Charge Nurse on Compass, co-recipients of the Gary Napier Award for Nursing Excellence in Direct Care presented during National Nursing Week in May. Mental Health Associate Robert Humphrey, BA, MA, on Compass received the Mae Smith Legacy Award. All three were given standing ovations.

In addition, a new award—the Nurse Leader Legacy Award—was presented to Dr. Jane Mahoney, who retired last month, and to past Chief Nursing Officer, Dr. Pam Greene. This special award was established to honor those nursing leaders who have made significant contributions to nursing at Menninger and at the state and national levels. All of these names are now on the hall of fame plaques outside the staffing office for Patient Care Services.

Facts = Quality NursingChief Nursing Officer Dr. Avni Cirpili highlighted numerous landmarks of nursing excellence in the annual state of nursing presentation, including the following.• Menninger is one of only three hospitals that has received the Pathway to Excellence® designation four times. Just 162 hospitals combined hold this designation. Menninger nursing has many strengths, one of which is a long tradition of shared governance, which is vital for nursing excellence.• 79% of all nursing staff stated that they would highly recommend working at The Menninger Clinic to others.• More than half (53.3%) of Menninger nurses have attained a specialty certification. Menninger ranks in the 75th percentile nationally among all hospitals for the percentage of nurses with advanced certifications.• For three consecutive years, our nursing staff members have had at least six presentations at a state or national psychiatric nursing conference.

Annual Luncheon Raises $375,000The numbers are in! On May 3, more than 450 sponsors and guests filled the Westin Galleria ballroom for Menninger’s Annual Signature Luncheon, helping raise $375,000 for The Clinic’s mental health training and research programs. Clinic Board Chair Jeff Paine opened the program, speaking about the impact of mental illness on families and the promising collaboration between Menninger and Baylor College of Medicine. Paine was followed by CEO Tony Gaglio who discussed The Clinic’s expansion into the com-munity and the importance of philanthropy to supporting Menninger’s training, research and outreach missions. The Hamill Foundation, a longtime supporter, was honored with the Vital Balance Award before former patient Debi Strong took the stage to discuss her treatment at

Menninger and her sustained recovery from major depression. Finally, actor Sean Astin, the luncheon’s keynote speaker, was interviewed by KHOU-TV personality Deborah Duncan. Astin captivated the audience as he described his life growing up with mother Patty Duke before her diagnosis with bipolar disorder in 1982 and what he called “freak-outs” at the time. “We didn’t have a vocabulary for what we were experiencing at home,” Astin said. After Duke was correctly diagnosed and treated, she dedicated herself to helping others and to speaking out about her illness as a mental health advocate. Astin is proud of his mother’s efforts and encouraged those in attendance to never give up and to be the “CEO of your own body, mind and spirit.” The Office of Philanthropy thanks the many staff members, guests, speakers and volunteers who helped to ensure the 2018 luncheon’s success!

Suggestion Box Nets Improvement for ParentsThanks to Shannon Pursley, Receptionist, for noticing that young parents had used the Commons’ restroom floor to change diapers for their infant. As a result of this note in the new suggestion boxes, Facilities has swiftly installed baby changing stations in both restrooms nearest Admissions. The suggestion boxes and cards are located in the Commons next to the entrance to the Wellness Center and first floor time clock.

Care Coordination Center Builds TeamThe centralized patient care access team now includes Althea Richardson, who has been an Operator in the Call Center for more than 10 years, and Jasmine Hughes, an intern from Houston Baptist University, announced Danielle Williams, Center Director. Richardson has prior experience in education as well as being a psychology student, which makes her a great anchor on the Care Coordination team as the Center launches July 1. Hughes has a bachelor’s degree in business administra-tion management and is pursuing her master’s degree in human resources. She is working with Williams on developing training and resource materials for coordinators as well as related projects that are essential to the new Center’s opera-tions and data collection. A chief goal for the Center is to provide prospective patients and families with a premier experience that is compassionate, effective and efficient. For several months, Williams has been learning about Menninger’s services and the needs of callers. She routinely takes calls now for Outpa-tient Services, and has also responded to calls to Admissions and worked closely with Admissions coordinators. “The one thing I cannot emphasize enough is how important it is to be a good listener,” she said. “I took a call

IT Upgrades ATP Technology IT recently worked with ATP’s leaders to upgrade the computer equipment to better support the patients’ computer- school space. The solutions are not only functional but also keep our adolescent patients safe from ligatures.

Process Defined for Promoting Events & Sharing News Within Menninger Thanks for the positive compliments about the Week at a Glance email. This is one of the new ways of informing Team Menninger while limiting the smattering of emails about event information and other happenings. Our new Organizational Communication Guidelines HR-5.12 outline “Menninger All” information—both urgent and advance news you can use. Below are the key points that affect communication for Team Menninger the most.• Update newsletter will continue being published monthly. A fresh design will be coming in July.• The Link remains our in-house website that provides many resources, including the organizational calendar, news, new employees, policies, department-specific information, Quick Links to often-used applications, forms, etc.• Posters or fliers keep special opportunities as visible reminders. Because posted information is often visible to patients and families, visitors, touring groups and vendors all posted material must be approved by the Marketing Depart-ment and be stamped or printed with the expiration date so old materials can be promptly removed to avoid cluttering workspaces and public areas. Staff in each department and program are responsible for promptly removing outdated fliers in their areas. The Marketing Department is happy to provide creative services for poster/fliers with a minimum of one business day notice.• Menninger All emails, which all employees, faculty, contractors and trainees receive, are now reserved for three types: 1. Urgent IT system or safety news, 2. Week at a Glance promotional information and 3. time-sensitive updates

New computer equipment awaits ATP patients in their study room.

from a young lady wanting information regarding the services we offer here and what would be best for her son. She had a lot of questions and she shard a lot about her son and family. She must have said 10 times how her son was a good kid and he was just going through some things. “I allowed her to talk, without interruptions; it was like no one had ever allowed her to get it all out. Then I was able to schedule her son for an outpatient appointment,” Williams said. “She thanked me immensely for being such a good listener. I made her day, and all I did was listen.”

Best Place to Work: Annual Survey & Pillar Awards Highlight Summer• Our annual engagement survey, which also qualifies Houston employers for the Top Workplace honor list, will take place June 14-25 for all employees and faculty. • Nominations will open after the engagement survey closes for Menninger’s highest award for all staff, the Pillar Awards. This year’s Pillar Awards will be announced at an organization-wide event in August. Start thinking of co-workers who are model representatives of our five values: excellence, teamwork, hope, integrity and caring. Nomination forms will be available the week of June 25.

Eyeglass Donors AppreciatedThe Gathering Place thanks all of the staff who donated more than 100 eyeglasses to the Lions Club recently. On June 14, the mother of a Gathering Place member will be taking the glasses to Africa, where she will be part of a medical team administering eyesight tests. The member’s mother is a nurse practitioner and is donating her time to the mission.

Split Bill Pilot on ATP SuccessfulSince early in 2018, ATP patient families have received bills that separated charges for room and board from profes-sional service fees. The split bill facilitates families receiving reimbursement from their insurance company for qualifying professional services. As a result of the pilot, the split bill process is now standard procedure. The combined daily charges range from approximately $1,600-$1,900. Finance and ATP continue to review this procedure and follow up with families about their satisfaction with insurance reim-bursement and the treatment outcomes.

Hope Family Room Near CompletionImprovements to the renovation of the family room on Hope have been finished, including lighting that can be dimmed, new accent paint and easy-to-access computer and monitor for sessions on Skype and viewing Menninger’s educational podcasts on YouTube. Coming soon will be comfortable furnishings that match the unit’s existing decor. Facilities and IT will be renovating remaining family rooms on other units as well. Continues on next page
