What we think…

• One common view of development is that it can be measured economically – that increasing wealth or increasing levels of poverty are indicators of development.

Development is…

• Reducing levels of poverty• Increasing levels of wealth• Reducing the gap between the richest and poorest

members of society• Creating equal status for men and women• Creating justice, freedom of speech and political

participation from everyone• Ensuring everyone is safe from conflict and terrorism• Ensuring everyone fulfils their basic needs – food

water and shelter• Ensuring that all children have good standards of

education.

Human Development Index

• Development is measured using the Human Development Index (HDI).

• The HDI is worked out by putting together 3 important pieces of information:– Life expectancy– Literacy– Real GDP (Gross Domestic Product – is how much

money earned)

• Use of resources, natural and human, to achieve higher standards of living. Before it was based solely on economic factors, now it includes social measures and ideas such as freedom.

The Brandt Line

• Public awareness of the development gap is not new.

• It was first brought into the news headlines in the Brandt Report in 1980.

• This report by Willy Brandt, a German politician, drew a line on the map that separated the richer countries from the poorer ones.

• The MEDC’s are situated mainly in the northern hemisphere.

• The LEDC’s are situated in the southern hemisphere.
