To Kill Your Website In Search Engines

Previously I've posted about hacking of my website, mysterious duplicate content pages

that shouldn't exist, and how that has caused my website to plummet in the search engines.

I've found that part of my troubles have been caused by thousands of malicious links to

bogus url's that my server served up due to a bad configu ration. Duplicate content pages

were created from the bogus links.The search engines followed, indexed, and then penalized

me for those duplicate pages.

Other problems wi th bogus url's are due to direct hacking of the blog. Hacking of my

Wordpres blog's link structure generated more bogus pages, for example, I have a screen

shot further down this page that shows a page ?p=rfzfaselzokzu that was indexed by Google

and other search engines.

Somehow w ildcards got enabled on the server, which is what allowed the creation of most

of the malicious links. I didn't notice i t had changed, it was at the end of my htaccess file

and usually I only add to the block list which is near the top of the file.

In order to eliminate and prevent further duplicate content that these malicious links

create, I used several measures to close off server vu lnerabilities. The first thing was

disabling wildcards on the server, leaving me with the problem of killing the malicious li nks

in the search engines and fixing the blog's damaged link structure. I also noticed some

pages seem to be missing some content, that will be a long task going through all the pages

and comparing the pages to old backups.

It is very possible for a hacker to remove content from pages, or remove entire pages from

a Wordpres blog, Google it for yourself.

What happened is that in January 2012, I discovered Google was indexing a ton of pages

that shouldn't exist on my sites. I also saw certain hacker like activity i n my server l ogs, and

using awstats, I found a huge increase in the undesirable sites link ing to my pages.

One issue I found was that as I v isited some of these linker web pages, there were no

visible links to my pages to be found. That's not really a problem, the search enginespenalize you if you link to bogus websites, they also understand that you can't control who

links to you and they don't penalize you for that. (edit 2-2-2013):  Google has implemented a

new feature for webmasters which allows webmasters to " disavow" links on an individual

basis.

But when these malicious websites create bogus links, and vulnerabilities on your host

server end up creating duplicate pages from those bogus links, then you get penalized in a

big way. I've been taken from a Page Rank of 4 to a Page Rank of 0 in less than 2 months.

This has happened to other wordpress blogs, I Googled it.

  I currently have 5,620 Pages Not Found, almost all of which are the

result of these malicious links.

I created the 404 Page Not Found errors when I took measures to strip off the crap

appended to the real url 's. Before that, these bogus urls were being served up by my server,

and they created duplicate content pages that the search engines penalize for. For example,

the last entry below, usa-anti-communist.com/National, was being served up as usa-anti-

communist.com/index.phpNational. Interesting that the page even opened in the web

browser w ith a name like .phpNational.

The only valid url on that page is the pdf of November 1970 Military Review, which has an

article about the military's development of biological weapons tailored to target specific

races of man, an article titled " Ethnic Weapons". I moved that pdf, that's why it's a page not

found. The url ?p=1995 was not a valid blog page ever, I don't know what they were trying todo with that one.

Other than that, all of those urls (in the screen shot) t hat Google has been look ing for are

bogus, created by malicious linkers.

  Not all the bogus urls have only 1 or 2 web pages linking to them,

some especially targeted pages have as many as 9 web pages

responsible for creating bogus links to a g iven page.

If I just say take 2 web pages as the average number of malicious linkers for each bogus

url, that equates to almost 12,000 web pages that created these malicious links. That's like

an army attacked my websites.

The number of pages that link to the bogus url are in the column right after the "404 Not

Found". By clicking on that li st of pages that li nk to the bogus url, I can see exactly who

created the links.

 As you can see, that bogus page was f irst created in October. What I did at t hat time was

ban 55sites.net for other malicious activity in the blog area. This is when this problem

started, I just didn't catch it until it had hurt my rank real bad. I was too busy tr ying to get

information out to the people and I wasn't checking my Google webmaster account because

my site was well i ndexed and had good Page Rank in all the search engines.

Both of those websites are here in the United States. So are many of the malicious linkers

that I checked on. With almost 6,000 bogus urls , it's too big of a task for me to investigate

each one, I'm focusing on eliminating the server vulnerabilities that these attackers exploited.

This was not the work of 2 websites, I know for a fact that at a minimum, hundreds of websites did this. I looked into

hundreds of these bogus urls in the "linked from" column, and I saw only a couple of repeat offenders.

 As I said, my focus is on closing o ff the server vulnerabili ties. The number of websites that did th is probably numbers

the thousands. I downloaded a full report from my Google webmaster report so I have a record of w ho did what, althoug

doubt that I'll ever have time to l ook into each one.

  There was an all out assault against my websites that began in January this year, that's whenmultitude of bogus links were poured on.

Once a site's Page Rank is damaged to a rank of 0 in Google, it has been the experience of other webmasters that i t is

to be long term damage that can take years to recover from, and it migh t not even ever recover. You can research that fo

yourself if you think I'm making that up. Hopefully MSN and Yahoo won't be so unforgiving.

  If you use wordpress for your blog, you may as well draw a circle on your site and write "Hac

Me" on it. Wordpress is one of the most popular blog platforms, and it's also the biggest piece

shit out there. It's full of security holes. I didn't realize how vulnerable Wordpress is unti l I had

major problems from web attacks.

I should have tried PivotX instead of Wordpress. You can use either a MySQL database, or flat files.

  Now as you can see from the first screen shot I posted, I have a lot of bogus urls that aren't f

my blog.

These aren't simply appended to query strings. Examples: .com/National, .com/Case, .com/ard/Planned,

.com/accident2.phpNSA.

I'm hosted on a shared server at hostgator and I'm really becoming quite displeased with them. It turns out that i f anyo

put in a url with crap appended to it (as shown in the first image above), the server would serve up that bogus url as a pa

Google allows webmasters to submit urls for removal from their index, but you have to enter each url one at a time. Ju

try submitting almost 6,000 urls one at a time. It took me 3 hours just t o knock out 100 of these bogus urls.

So I got creative. I decided to try serving up 410 Page Gone errors for these bad ur ls, instead of leaving them as 404's

Google is sti ll look ing for. Supposedly Google gives up on a 404 after a month, but it seems to be taking a lot longer than

for these to vanish.

 A 410 is an old school error page, it seems p lenty of webmasters don't even know about it , people just use 404.

  I never made any pages with urls of ?p=rfzfaselzokzu or a directory /wp/page.

If you noticed in the screen shot of the 410 Page Gone, Google was looking for directories of 

wp/category/wwwyoutube.com/watch. I certainly never had directories named /wwwyoutube.com or /watch.

I note that I gave up trying to restrict bad bots from my websites using the robots.txt file. The bad bots simply ignore t

instructions, so I just ban the bots in htaccess when I see them doing bad things in my websites.

I've actually had to add more code to my server conf iguration because the perps found more holes in the server after

posted my soluti ons. I don't want to post any more solutions because they're likely to find more exploits if I post what I

and I removed the code samples I put here. I doubt that the typical webmaster sees thi s sort of determined attack.
