TRANSCRIPT

University of Houston's Physicist Arthur Weglein is a Founder & Director of Mission-Oriented Seismic Research Program (M-OSRP).M-OSRP (Mission-Oriented Seismic Research Program) was started in January 2001 by Professor of Physics and Earth & Atmosphere Arthur Weglein to address pressing high priority seismic exploration and production problems. The magnitude of the challenges being addressed within Mission-Oriented Seismic Research Program often requires new thinking and concept development, and is thus a fundamental research activity. M-OSRP begins with high impact fundamental seismic exploration and production challenges, and commits to solving them.M-OSRP is a research group comprised of UH faculty, researchers and graduate students focused on fundamental advances in seismic processing and imaging that will give energy explorers an additional set of tools, in their seismic toolbox, increasing their options and over-all toolbox capability. The goal is to more accurately locate and resolve pictures of what lies deep beneath the Earths surface and help recover hard-to-find oil and gas deposits. Research conducted through the M-OSRP has led to advances that have played a role in major offshore oil discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere.Mission-Oriented Seismic Research Program is administered and centered in the physics department but mentors & students in several departments, including the department of Physics and the department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. M-OSRP at the University of Houston is pictured with IBMs Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.) system. The Cell/B.E. employs computer technology originally co-designed by IBM for video-game consoles, and UH seismic researchers are employing this extremely fast technology to more effectively target oil reserves. UHs M-OSRP has the Cell/B.E. as part of a very exclusive Loaner Program from IBM.

About Arthur B Weglein:

Arthur Weglein received "SEG Reginald Fessenden Medal", "Townsend Harris Medal", "Karcher Award", "Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished Professor of Physics". Dr. Weglein is a co-author of a two volume graduate textbook on Seismic Imaging and Inversion published in 2012 by Cambridge University Press.

Weglein heads the Mission-Oriented Seismic Research Program (M-OSRP) which is sponsored by 16 of the largest oil and service companies world-wide. Bogdan Nita & Haiyan Zhang who were involved M-OSRPs long-term project to improve seismic imaging methods received SEG J. Clarence Karcher Award.

More information on Awards & Recognition:

Reginald Fessenden Award: The Reginald Fessenden Award is given to a person who has made a specific technical contribution to exploration geophysics, such as an invention or a theoretical or conceptual advancement, which, in the opinion of the Honors and Awards Committee and the Executive Committee, merits special recognition.
