Houses and homes in Tredegar

A Key Stage 2

Educational Resource Pack

Part 3—Using the Census

45

From the evidence collected by the

census, we can find out how many people

lived in each house, their names, how old

they were, where they were born, how

they were related and what jobs they had.

Later censuses provide more information

than the earlier ones so we’ll start our

investigation with the 1911 census.

We can find out who lived in each house in Carpenter’s Yard from 1841

up to 1911 because of a document called the census. This was similar

to a register or survey of every house in the whole country. The census

was carried out every 10 years.

What changes in people’s lives took place in

the 19th century and how can we find out

more about them?

Page 3: Houses & homes in Tredegar Part 3 Using the Census

46

At Carpenter’s Yard, the houses were built against a slope, which meant

that numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7 didn’t have any doors or windows at the

back! In number 8, two families lived on separate floors. In numbers 9,

10, 11 and 12, there were windows at the back but no doors because

they were built on top of numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7— just like flats!

The doors were split in two halves like stable doors and the windows were very small.

47

Here is the 1911 census for number 4 Carpenter’s Yard.

Read the 1911 census sheets carefully.

What is the average number of rooms for each house?

What is the average number of people living in each house?

Think about the number of rooms and people living in your home. How would you feel about living in one of the houses in Carpenter’s Yard? Try to work out where the people in each house would have slept.

Draw a bar graph to show the different places where people aged over 16 were born.

Why do you think the people born outside Tredegar came here to live?

Find all the places on a map and work out how far they are from Tredegar (use Google maps to do this).

Draw a Venn diagram to show how many people spoke English only, both English and Welsh, and Welsh only.

Investigate if the numbers of Welsh and English speakers changed in Tredegar during the 19th century. Use the Local Studies Collection in Tredegar library to help you with your research.

74

Read the 1881 census sheets carefully.

What is the average number of people living in each house in 1881?

How does answer this compare with 1911—more or less crowded?

If we take for granted that the number of rooms in each house in 1881

was the same as that in 1911, where would everyone have slept in each

house in 1881?

Draw a bar graph to show the different places where people aged over

16 were born. Find these places on a map and work out how far they are

from Tredegar.

Are there differences with your results for the 1911 census?

Investigate why people left Ireland and came to places like

Tredegar to live during the 19th century.

Read the 1851 census sheets carefully.

What is the average number of people living in each house in 1851?

How does answer this compare with 1881—more or less crowded?

If we assume that the number of rooms in each house was the same in

1851 as 1911, where would everyone have slept in each house in 1851?

Draw a bar graph to show the different places where people aged over

16 were born.

Using Google Maps, find all these places on a map and work out how far

they are from Tredegar.

Are there differences with your results for 1911 & 1881?

Study the maps and tables in an article by John Hilling

(in the Gwent Local History Journal, 2006) about the people

who moved into Tredegar during the first half of the 19th

century. Use the Local Studies Collection at Tredegar library

to help you with your research.

83

Did the population of Tredegar change

during the 19th century?

The 1841 census in Great Britain was the first census that recorded

every person’s name living in every house in the UK. Censuses were

also carried out in 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831.

Owing to the way that the census information was collected before

1841, we have to compare how the number of people living in the

ancient parish of Bedwellty changed during the 19th century rather

than just focusing upon Tredegar.

Bedwellty Parish included the towns of Tredegar, and most of the towns

of Rhymney, Ebbw Vale and Blackwood.

A map of the ancient parish of Bedwellty is shown on the next page.

84

Using the census data on the next page,

draw a line or bar graph to show how the

population in the parish of Bedwellty

changed from 1801 to 1901.

What reasons can you think may help explain

the shape of the graph?
