Blast from the past

Dear Readers, The heat is on. A heated debate is on too at the Club. Most of us feel that RCL is our

second home. Are we really treating our Club as our second home? It does not seem so, at least looking at the photographs featured in this issue of RCL Times. Some body said, we should feature only the good things of our Club in the magazine. RCL Times is the reflection of the Club and if we do not bring out the negatives, we will not be doing justice to the Club or its members.

So let us take at look at the dark side of Ranchi Club. Should we allow some members to give the others and such an esteemed club a bad name? Our forefathers have given us such a wonderful heritage, should or shouldn’t we hand over this wonderful heritage to our next generation in a better condition? Let’s get our thinking caps on.Do enjoy another interesting edition of RCL Times with all the regular features.

Letter to the President - "I love my club, so I am speaking from my heart."

Dear Mr. Chhabra,

At the outset I must congratulate you and your team for the good work you are doing for the Club. Hope it continues in future too.

However, when I look back, I realise I am a stranger in the Club. When we joined the Club, behaviour and etiquette were of prime importance. I regret to say that due to some members, these have become a rarity in the club.

Some members feel it below their dignity to respect women. They are not aware of even normal etiquette. They feel burping and letting off in public is correct. When they are corrected, they say it’s natural. Some of them feel it is quite ok to sit with their feet up on another chair. They don’t care whether they are prop-erly dressed for the Club or not. Sometimes even their clothes are dirty. Some members abuse the bearers at times. I do feel ashamed of such members. These members don’t feel it neces-sary to bring their better halves to the Club, possibly due to the

reason that they would not approve of such behaviour.

In good clubs, strict discipline is adhered to and one is even not even allowed to talk on cell phones. In our Club, some members use the card room as a lounge. It seems their complete business dealings are done over the phone at the card room itself.

It is high time we clearly spell out rules and regulations of the club. We must educate the members about etiquette and disci-pline. We must reprimand the erring ones. We should plant more CCTV cameras at strategic locations. I love my club, so I am speaking from my heart.

Thanking you, Yours Sincerely,

Usha Garg

This is the Ranchi Club given to us by our forefathers...

Did You Know?

Q. Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

A. When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's but-tons have remained since.

Q. Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?

A. This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced approximately, 'mayday.'

Q. Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?

A. In France , where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US , Ameri-cans (mis)pronounced it 'love.'

Q. Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?

A. In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X rep-resented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

Q. Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?

A. In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.

Q. Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?

A. It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by

offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simul-taneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.

Q. Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the lime-light'?

A. Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and the-atres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the center of attention.

Q. Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?

A. Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

Q. In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?

A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' So he had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoy-ment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to ac-company her.

Mary liked this a lot and when returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie'.

Q. Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?

A. Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.

An irate woman burst into the baker's shop and said, "I sent my son in for two pounds of cookies this morning but when I weighed them there was only one pound. I suggest you check your scales." The baker looked at her calmly for a moment or two and then replied, "Ma'am, I suggest you weigh your son."
