Chapter 1- The house in the mango streetThe girl tell us about how her family is always moving from place to place and we can see that they are in a low economic situation because of how she describes her old houses and how they dream about a big fancy one. She says mango street is the best one they've ever had but it was not what they were looking.

Chapter 2-hairsShe describes how everyone in the family has different hair and that her mom is the one that has the best hair of all and that she loves to smell it and feel it in her face when she went to sleep.

Chapter 3- boys &girlsShe describes that she and her brothers are in totally different worlds, her brothers are each other best friends and that they are all the time together but they wont talk to a girl. She mentions that her sister is to young for being her best friend and that she feels alone until she has one.

Chapter 4- My Name

In this chapter we finally get to know the girls name which is Esperanza, that means hope, she says that she inherited from her grandma who was a really strong and free woman but was depressed all the time. She says that her name doesn't correspond her as she is and that she would like to change it someday.

Chapter 5- Cathy Queen of CatsIn this chapter she describes us the kind of neighborhood she is living in and the people that live near her, she says that there is a woman that loves cats and that she has a lot of cats in her house and that she says that she relates with the queen of France.

Chapter 6-Our Good day.

She describes how she gives five dollars to a pair of girls that needed them to buy a bike so she gives the five dollars to them and also owns the bike. They rode all together because of the excitement of the first day, it was all fun and she got two new friends.

Chapter 7- LaughterLucy and Rachel were really alike and you can tell they were sisters just by looking at them it was not like with Esperanza and Nenny, but they had a laughter that was similar and they thought the same way about some things. They are very alike.

Chapter 8-There is a junk store in the corner of the street which is owned by a black man really serious and that dosent talk too much but nenny always is asking him questions and talking to him.

Chapter 9- Meme ortizShe describes her new neighbor which is called meme, she says that the house is really old and has crooked steps. She tells us about the dog meme owns and his story. But what she likes most about the house is the huge tree with all the

squirrels on it and all big and green.

Chapter 10-Louie his cousin and his other cousinUnder the house of Meme there is a puertorican family living there the big boy is called louie and has a lot of sisters and cousins, once one cousin came along with a yellow cadilac and gave everyone a lap, everyone was impressed with the car, but the police came and he tried to escape by driving really fast but he crashed

chapter 11 MarinMarin is Louie cousin her family stayed in Puerto Rico so she is living with their aunts she works for avon selling makeup, so she is always maked up, she always listens to the radio and when no one is whatching she lights some cigarretes. She is a typical teenage girl who is in disagree with her parents and whats a better life.

Chapter 12- Those who don'tShe says that her neighborhood scares everyone that doesn't know the place or the people, but for everyone it is really peaceful because they know each other and no one messes with no one so they live in peace but as soon as they get in another neighborhood the fear begins...

Chapter 13-There was a woman that had too many children and couldnt control them all, she was abandoned by her husband and her kids are always jumping around the neighborhood without any care for other things or themselves, so no one worried anymore about them or when something bad happened to them.

Chapter 14-There is a girl named Alicia that makes tortillas and is really afraid of mice, she inherited some instruments to make tortillas from her mother, but she also studies because she wants to be prepared for life to do something big, she is a good girl...

Chapter 15There is a guy named Darius that is very shy and sometime fool but he said something wise that day, he said that between all the clouds and the sky that looked big enough, he said that the bigger cloud was god with no explanation or doubt he said that was god.

Chapter 16-Esperanza says that there is a lot of different names for all things, so they begin naming clouds with their friends Rachel and Lucy, but as the game goes on they begin to fight and insult each other, they get mad and Esperanza tells them to leave and never get back because they are not friends anymore.

Chapter 17-A neighbor gives them three pairs of shoes for all the little girls, they were all really happy because they had never used high heels before and they are really exited by the gift, they run all around the neighborhood changing shoes and saying they are like Cinderella and will never take them of again.

Chapter 18- There is a place in the school called cantine where some kids stay after school stay to eat because they live too far away and they dont have any time to go home, but Esperanza wants to stay because it sounds fancy and after arguing with her mom and with the big sister she gets to stay and eat there.

Chapter 19-Its is the baptism of a cousin of Esperanza and she has a new outift except for the shoes which she feels embarased of, in the party she doesnt want to get up because she doesnt want anyone to look at her chanclas, until her uncle Nacho takes her out and they dance like movie stars and everybody claps and laughs.

Chapter 20One day Esperanza wakes up and sees that her hips have grown, no one knows why or what to do with them so they begin dancing and moving their hips and making their own songs up, Nenny doesnt have that much talent but they are still having fun.

Chapter 21-Esperanza in been thinking in getting a job like the other kids, an easy job in which she can gain some money, then her aunt Lala tells her to go where she works and she might get a job as well, so she goes and gets the job but the problem was that she was very nervous and had no friends, but slowly she begins to break ice and get confidence even an oriental old guy kisses her

Chapter 22-Esperanza´s father tells her her grandparent is dead and that she will have to tell the others because she is the oldest. Esperanza is really impressed by seeing her father cry because he had been always so strong and imposing authority and seeing him so weak was really strange for her.

Chapter 23Esperanza has a aunt that was once a swimmer but because she didnt dived well one time she injured the spine, became paralyzed and even blind, she was a very good person she listened to all of Esperanza´s poems and books but one time they were playing to imitated her they found out she had died.

Chapter 24-Esperanza went with a witch woman in order to know about her future, and then the woman began making some stuff like lighting candles and throwing cards but after all she just says that there is a home in the heart, thing that Esperanza doesn't understand and gets all confused but doesn't ask more.

Chapter 25-Esperanza calls Marin's night out on the town when she danced with a man named Geraldo. She never got his last name or knew a thing about him. When he was killed that night, she visited the hospital and was questioned by the police but she couldnt gave them any information because He’s a boy she just met that night.

Chapter 26

There is a girl called Ruthie who is daughter of Edna the owner of the next door building, she is a grown-up but she still played and ate candy thats why everybody liked her so much. She is good at many things but she got married with a rich guy, so no one understands what is she doing in Mango Street, and she will not go.

Chapter 27-

Earl is a guy who works at night as a jukebox repairman, when its day his blinds are always shut and his door is always closed because he is sleeping, he always gives records away to Esperanza and her friends, he has a wife but no one has ever seen it.

Chapter- 28

There is a guy in the neighborhood called Sire who is a bad boy and has a girlfriend called Louis, she is really cute always smelling well and all, Esperanza wishes to have a relationship like theirs how she holds him and the late hours at night.

Chapter 29-

Esperanza feels related to four trees that were planted in the concrete in front of her house. She says that although they are skinny and people do not see their real strength they are really strong and she somehow feels identified with them.

Chapter 30-

Across the street from where Esperanza lives a man who worked very hard to bring his mother to the United States from Mexico. They call her Mamacita, When she first arrives, Esperanza sees her fat body exit the taxi in beautiful pink shoes. She speaks no English. and She must learn to speak English but the problem is that She does not want to.

Chapter 31-

Rafaela lives on Mango Street and is in a very strict marriage. She is constantly leaning out of the window, waiting for her husband to return, but he will not allow her to leave the apartment because he fears her beauty will cause problems.

Chapter 32

There is a girl called Sally who is always putting makeup on and its beautiful, but in the school gets bullied and she doesnt have any friends, she comes from a very religious family so she doesnt attend to parties or anything, after school she runs home to change so her parents wouldnt see her.

Chapter 33

Minerva is only a few years older than Esperanza, but lives a different life. Her husband hits her and leaves. She has two kids to raise by her own. She and Esperanza share their poetry with one another.

Chapter 34

When her family goes to the hills on Sundays, Esperanza never wants to go. Esperanza really thinks that the people who live in those houses are stuck-up and don't have to worry about anything but garbage. She hopes to live in a big house on a hill one day.

Chapter 35

Esperanza thinks about the good women and bad women and thinks she is evil. She does not want to sit around and wait to get married and have no hopes or choices. She thinks she is ugly, and because of that she thinks she few options

Chapter 36

Esperanza's mom is always remembering Esperanza the importance of breaking out of the cycle, because she is really smart and doesn't want Esperanza ending up in a kitchen all day like the custom says.

Chapter 37

Sally always comes up all bruised to school and she says that she fell, but she eventually tells Esperanza the truth that her father beats her back home because he fears that she will run away like her sisters, so for a time she stays with Esperanza until her father comes and begs her to come back.

Chapter 38

Esperanza is playing with her friend Sally when some kids come and take Sally's keys, they say that Sally will have them back as son as she kisses every boy. Esperanza feels like she needed to do something to save her friend, so she goes for a brick and sticks.When she got back everybody told her to leave so she felt embarrassed and passed out. When she woke up all her dress was green and her socks all dirty.

Chapter 39

Esperanza is really mad with Sally because she waited for her a long long time by the red clowns and she never showed up. She began to think the way the other guys talked to her and touched her and that sex is not how it is presented in the movies.

Chapter 40

Sally got married although she was very young so she moved to another state where marrying underage is legal, she says she married because she loved him, but Esperanza thinks she did it to escape. Her husband barely lets her so anything like use the phone or visit friends so she is always at home.

Chapter 41

Lucy and rachel sister dies and there are a lot of families coming to give their respects, three sister get Esperanzas attention because they are all dressed the same. One of the pulls Esperanza off and tells her how beautiful her name is and to ask for a wish.

Chapter 42

Esperanza's friend, Alicia, is from Guadalajara, Mexico, and always speaks about returning home. Esperanza feels like she has no home and refuses to claim Mango Street and the house

Chapter 43

Esperanza wishes for a house of her own, in which nobody tells her what to do or how to clean. It will have her own flowers and decorations and clothing. It is only a picture in her mind.

Chapter 44

Esperanza loves to tell stories about everything she has done and everywhere she goes. She has lived on several streets; however, the one that sticks out in her memory is Mango Street, and she realizes how important it is to her
