What’s New?
As part of HB5 passed in 2013, new graduation requirements are mandated for new fall 2014 9th grade students and thereafter
There are two graduation plans available for new 2014 9th grade students:
Foundation Plan with an Endorsement* and
Distinguished Level of Achievement
After the student's sophomore year and only with written parent permission, a student may decide to continue toward graduation under the 22 Credit Foundation High School Program without earning an endorsement.

Building Success
Students entering 9th grade fall 2014
It is the recommendation of the SISD staff that the
Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan which
includes the requirement to complete Algebra II

graduate on this plan to qualify for the top 10%
ranking which provides automatic admission to
public higher education in Texas.

Associate Degree students are required to take a Dual Credit Speech course to meet degree requirements
Students will be able to select DC Speech as an elective
All students must show proficiency in the following speech skills: Delivering clear verbal messages

SHS Course Guide
All new fall 2014 9th graders will select a graduation plan that leads to an endorsement.
The course guide alignment.
All courses are aligned to an endorsement through a coherent sequence into a degree plan
Students must complete courses in a sequence including an advanced course in the pathway
Each endorsement provides the necessary coursework and training to prepare students for college and career readiness
SHS Course Guide
All incoming 2014 9th graders will need to complete
pathway courses in their selected sequence in order
to take a Practicum course junior and/or senior
year.
Current students that apply and receive a paid
work experience can take a Practicum course their
junior and/or senior year.
GPA and Class Rank
Current board policy does not include dual credit
courses in GPA/Class Rank calculations
Current policy weighs Advanced Placement and Pre
AP courses more than others when configuring GPA
Example
Eng II = final semester grade x 1.0
Eng II Pre AP = final semester grade x 1.05
Eng III AP = final semester grade x 1.10
Current Courses with Weighted GPA
BP EIC(Local)
English I-V PreAP, AP
Math – Geometry Pre AP, Alg II Pre AP, PreCalculas PreAP, Calculus AP, Comp Sci AP, Statistics AP
Science – Biology Pre AP, Chem. PreAP, Physics P AP, Chem. AP, Anatomy
Social Studies – World Geography PreAP, World Hist Pre AP, US Hist AP, Psyc AP,
Other- Spanish/French Level III or higher, Art History AP, Art Studio AP, Music Theory AP
Any other Pre AP or AP course adopted
GPA and Class Rank
A recommendation will be made to include ALL dual
credit courses in GPA calculations starting with the
new 9th grade students in fall 2014.
Current SHS students will remain under the same
policy that was in place when they started their 9th
grade year 2013 or earlier.
Courses added to GPA and Weight
Eng III and IV DC
US Hist DC, Govt DC, Eco DC, Texas Govt DC
Art DC, Theater DC, Music Theory DC
Biology DC, Chem DC
College Algebra DC, PreCal Track DC
EDUC DC (St Phillips Course)

Recommendations
Select the Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan
as the default for all new 9th graders starting fall
2014
Add Dual Credit to board policy EIC(Local) to be
included in GPA/Class rank and weighted 1.10 as
are AP courses
Offer personal degree plans that cover all 5
endorsements provided in House Bill 5.
