It’s hard to believe that I’m sitting at my desk and writing this sale info already. Man time is sure going faster and faster. Looking back I realize that I have been raising registered Angus cows now for 29 years. That just doesn’t seem feasible. A lot has changed in my breeding philosophy during that time for sure. This year we will be offering 15 more bulls than we normally have in the past. After last years sale and talking with customers, we decided that it was time to add a few more bulls to the offering. I am a firm believer that we must cull very hard on our bulls in order to give our customers the best product we can. We feel if we dig deeper into our own herd, we are just ”diluting the pot,” you might say, by bringing in bulls that we normally just wouldn’t sell.

So we reached out to Kenny and Rachel Lee of Judith Gap and quickly made an agreement to buy the very top end of their registered Angus bulls. Many may know Kenny and Rachel from their time as ranch and herd managers at the FairView ranch in Melville MT. They have a great eye for cattle and breed cattle much like we would do. When the FairView dispersed, they were given the opportunity to pick out the very top end of the FV heifer calf crop and choose several cows in the dispersal sale as well. It is these genetics that we will now be marketing through our bull sale. The Lee’s will be raising and managing these calves till weaning time. At that point, Hould Angus will take possession and grow them right along side our own bulls for the spring bull sale. We are very excited to offer these outstanding genetics and cow families. These bulls will all come with the JBob prefix and the Hould Angus guarantee.

A lot has changed here in the last 12 months as well and most of it for the better. First the bad news, our youngest son Cole has left the house and has headed to Texas to pursue his bull riding dreams. Not going to lie, it’s pretty quiet now in this big empty house. Thankfully Ruby has our granddaughter, Hadley, to keep her busy. On a good note, I was able to retire from the HCE/TTC after 20 years and truly believe that if everyone fights for their dreams and has an awesome wife/family in their corner, you can accomplish anything. It is a great feeling to be doing what I enjoy everyday.

As far as the cattle, nothing has really changed and our philosophy is still the same. Breed For The Cow! There is zero emphasis on any EPD and never will be. Just good solid cattle that are fertile, functional, good uddered and productive enough to hang around into their teen years. All this and doing it in an environment/management that is harsh and extremely unforgiving.

HELLO TO ALL OF YOU ANGUS ENTHUSIASTS

OUR CATTLEFor the last 21 years at Hould Angus we have turned against the mainstream hype of great arithmetic behind each cow. Rather, we have developed a herd of cattle that will survive and excel in our environment by using maternal genetics with maternal integrity. What is Maternal Integrity? One only has to look into Angus Journals and stud books from the last decade to prove that there has been a ridiculous amount of bulls promoted to everyone as the future maternal giant of the breed (because of great arithmetic). Then, look at how many of those greats have completely fallen on their faces, only to leave commercial producers high and dry. We have done our due diligence and driven countless miles to physically evaluate daughters of the sires that we use at Hould Angus. This is one of many things numbers can’t evaluate but your eye can. With this philosophy and a lot of patience, we hold out and let the dust settle before we utilize the sires in our program.

We believe that it is time for the maternal Angus cow to make a comeback. With fads and the trends of mainstream Angus breeders and AI studs, it has become very evident that the high EPD cattle are not designed for an environment that requires them to be self-sufficient and last well into their teens in production. Is there a place for these cattle? Yes I definitely believe so. But is it in a ranch scenario that requires cattle to be moderate in size (4.5-5.0 frame), deep bodied, extremely easy keeping and fertile? All of this without a heavy supplement? NO! I don’t believe it to be possible to achieve in volume.

We are not anti EPD or DNA but stand on the side of caution with our desire to utilize them as a true breeding tool. With AAA playing with the numbers on a weekly basis, it makes it very hard for us to rely on them as much as many breeders do. To each their own, but we will choose to carry on as we have for now.

BULL OFFERINGOur bull offering this year is again very heavily influenced by OCC and the old N-Bar Emulation bloodlines. Crossing these two lines has given us females that are very functional in their design with tidy udders and extreme fertility. We consider our cow herd to be moderate in size and very capable of maintaining themselves in great shape even through some very tough conditions. With all that being said, we firmly believe that our bull mates to these cows should offer the same attributes to change your herd towards these functional traits and/or for our long time customers to maintain the type that has brought them back to Hould Angus.

HEIFER AND BRED COW PLACEMENTEach year we are getting more and more interest in our style and type of cattle. Again this fall we helped place several hundred head of bred cows and heifers to ranches in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming. If you have females for sale of any class and they are out of and/or bred to Hould Angus bulls, or suitable like genetics, we would like to know about them. The demand is great and the availability to acquire low input moderate framed females is rather low. Please contact us in the future and we will certainly give you a hand in buying or selling your cattle.

JUST MY 2 CENTS2020 was a year for the record book and I think we can all agree on that. From drought to hoppers, to 3.5” of rain in September, to then several feet of snow in October/November and back to winter drought conditions. I for one would really like a few years of average, man that would be wonderful.

Due to Covid, we had very few visitors to the ranch this year. That was a bummer for sure. But on the contrary, we received countless phone calls to discuss cattle. If you know me, you know I really like talking cattle, so that was uplifting under the circumstances.

A lot of different topics were brought up in these conversations of course. But the major topic on most people’s mind was the very poor conception rates they have been getting on their yearling and young age cows. Several had a good grasp on what caused it and where content that changes needed to be made. Others were completely baffled by the outcome over the last few years in terms of fertility. Most would ask my opinion and I had only 3 questions toask them about their program: 1) When do you breed your cows? 2) what do you feed your young cows before breeding? 3) Where do you buy your bulls for AI and cleanup? Almost all of the answers were the same, no matter the environment and management of the ranch. They were all the same.

First and foremost these ranches were buying semen/bulls from seedstock producers that didn’t align with their environment and/or feed requirements. In my opinion, it is best to lookfor a seedstock producer who feeds like you or less. I think it is now showing up after a couple generations of cattle that are bred for bigger, faster and more. If your seedstock supplier feeds his yearling heifers 20% protein hay and pellets but you feed them 7-10% protein grass hay, that does not work for a heifer that’s genetic potential requires much more. Now stack a couple generations of that into your replacements and try to breed them early and you now have a problem. Nothing against producers that feed more than others. If that’s what works for them that’s great and carry on. If you are having issues with adaptability of your cows, look to a seedstock supplier who mirrors what you have going on with your operation.

“MODERATE”THE LATEST BUZZ WORD IN THE ANGUS WORLDMy question is, “What is Moderate? Is it the physical frame size of an animal? Is it the mature weight of an animal?” I have my own opinion on this, so for a minute please oblige me. It is my opinion that moderate is just that, Moderate. Middle of the road and average in size. So with that being said, is a 14 month old bull that stands 52”-54” moderate? Is a bull that stands 47”-49” at 12 months tiny? Or this same bull being 48”-50” at 14 months? The answer, I believe, is that most people don’t know the difference. And it’s huge! I’ve often been asked why I am always measuring bull hip height using my sale catalog as a guide. And now some of you will find out. Just for visual purposes I looked up the average size of an adult male. It’s 5’9” and that is exactly what I am. Ironically! So, if I like a bull and have an interest in purchasing him,I will take my catalog and place it upon his hip horizontally and use that as a reference to where this bull measures up on my body. Mid sternum is 46”-47” and mid chest is 52”-54”. By now you have decided I have gone mad but please bare with me, because now you will find out what a huge difference those few inches at 12-14 months of age will make on your mature cow size in terms of “moderate”. 47”-49” at 12 months is 4-5 frame. (Moderate). That same bull at 48”-50” at 14 months is 4-5 frame(Moderate). The Bull that is 52”-54” at 14 months is 6-7 frame (Not Moderate). So in a matter of just a couple inches in frame at 14 months of age, could lead someone down the road to a cow herd that just isn’t moderate. If you’re serious about getting your mature cow size down, take a minute and find out where you measure up. Take your catalog and use it. If the animal is just too quick, use a reference point on a panel, gate or board. If you think you look silly doing it, it’s probably because you do look silly doing it. But I guarantee that you will walk away from a lot of bulls that you thought were moderate.

BREEDING GUARANTEEAll bulls are guaranteed breeders and our guarantee is simple, we stand behind the genetics and breeding soundness of our bulls 100% for the first breeding season. If a genetic issue surfaces or if the bull is unable to settle cows, you will get full credit, or a replacement bull if available. If a management issue or act of God occurs, we will stand 50% of the risk. Simply notify us by September 15, 2021 to receive your credit, less any salvage value.

Genetic Rustler is proven himself to be great from calving ease, weaning to yearling. He will have several calves born this year and will see heavy use again this year. An outstanding representation of his sire and carries with him the same sex drive characteristics of his father as well. He is constantly herding his cows and never letting them out of his site. I have never seen him sitting around the water and waiting for something to do. 6143 was a bull that I was the contending bidder on when he sold at auction. I asked the buyer when he was done with him to give me a call. Three years later I got the call and I immediately went and picked him up. The picture we have on this sire was taken the day I picked him up and trailered him to Hawkeye to get collected. An entire book could be written on the cow lines both top and bottom of this bulls pedigree. He was the most sex driven bull I have ever been around. He walked the pasture all day long bugling away. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall no matter when he wanted cows and his sons exhibit the same characteristics as well. The daughters are fantastic and have done a great job of keeping in the middle of the road. And now that they are 5-6-7 year old cows they are very hard to beat. There was a lot of contention amongst certain breeders that I owned the bull and hence the name. This bull will leave you females that last and last.

Best yet was recommended to us from Tim Ohlde. We where wanting to us OCC Work of Art to bring in some OCC Great Plains, but he is no longer available. Tim had been sending me pictures of Best Yet for the past couple of years so I decided to use him. We where wanting to add a little stretch and size to some of our cows and we are extremely happy with the results. This summer I got to spend the day with Tim and tour his cow herd. Needless to say OCC Best Yet is exactly what we where searching for.

I purchased Cortez in Partnership with Ray Gardner, Kenny Lee and Bryan Pike from OCC where he was the second highest selling bull of the day. Cortez has proven to be a great bull. He carries a massive amount of rib and fleshing ability in his calves that is second to none here. Again his bulls grew like crazy in the feedlot and the daughters show a great deal of broodiness and length of neck and spine. Exactly what we where looking for. Not one single Cortez heifer came up open this fall. And now we are calving them out and they are very well mannered with impeccable udders. Semen available.

We called him Jet Plus and his final calves are selling this year. Jet Plus was a fabulous bull phenotypically and a complete gentleman to be around. Great feet and fleshing ability to spare. His daughters are moderate in size with fleshing ability and tidy little udders. His mother is an outstanding Fahren 21x daughter out of the old Juanada cow. She is still here and will calve 13th calf by sale day to her half brother Classic. Take advantage of these last sons to sell. He truly did save the best for last.

We used Honcho because of his massive body depth and muscle shape. He is very similar in type to our Cortez bull and I really like Honchos pedigree. If you are wanting to moderate your mature cow size than Honcho is a great choice. Honcho has really caught on in the Angus scene now and I believe these might be one of the very first Honcho calves available this spring.

702 is well known to be a female producing extraordinaire. I noticed numerous daughters in my travels and figured I had better give him a try. Only to find out that semen is very limited so I used what I had very sparingly on a select group of cows. 702 will add more length to cattle without adding a lot of frame. He is a calving ease bull that worked very well for us. He is also the sire of our Cornerstone bull that we have in our lineup.

Cornerstone came to us as the high selling bull of the Stockmans Source bull sale in Nebraska. Cornerstone is sired by CCA Emblazon 702 who is making his name as a cow making fool. And his mother is McCumber Miss Wix 2022 who has several bulls working in purebred herds all across the country. Probably the most notable son resides at Redland Angus in Wyoming. Cornerstone should be calving ease and was purchased to cover all of our OCC Cortez, OCC Big Time and other OCC influenced females. We bought him as a 18 month old bull and the breeders who raised him used him AI in there fall program. The reports are all very good on his calves. Long bodied and coming very nicely out of heifers. We have sold a fair amount of se-men on the bull and semen is available. Proudly co-owned with Ryan Neiman and Travis Christman.

Solitude was our pick of the calf crop that year. He has started off to a sensational start for us. Great calving ase Bull with calves showing plenty of growth and extremely dense muscle. His sire was new to us and is highly regarded as being a outstanding female producer. Solitudes mother (1650) is as perfect of a replication of her mother (1450)as I have on the place. We will be putting in about 60 embryos this spring out of Solitudes mother (1650). 1650 has two sons now working for us. Semen available.

Ken Cook from the Oxbow had purchased a Jetstream son from us and when I delivered that bull, I noticed a small bunch of cows in a nearby pen. Once I got to the pen, I Immediately went straight to a cow that looked phenomenal in the pen of cows. It was this bulls mother, and soon after I called to find out what she was. This year we decided to market some of our bred cows through our spring bull sale. Fall of 2019 we had a very successful online female sale and planned to have that annually. But with our new live sale format on the bulls we decided to streamline things and sell them in the spring. You will have the opportunity to buy some very proven cows that have sold or are selling bulls in our sale. Many have daughters that will take on the task of replacing their mother here.

It is always very hard to pick cattle that go into a sale like this. I want to give you all the opportunity to buy some of our older more proven cows, as well as our up and coming candidates. These cows have taken their licks and have pulled through regardless of their age. You can buy with confidence knowing that these are strong,functional, fertile range cows that have paid their own way here.

Some of these cows will have calves by their side come sale day and others will calve later in the month. We are confident that these cows will move into herds across the country and make satisfied customers of their new owners.

This cow will be found come sale day. She is a very moderate daughter of the ABS sire GDAR Traveler 9161 and out of our donor cow 9029. 9029 was a favorite of the visitors because of her very gentle disposition and extremely attractive phenotype. 9161 was a bull that seen very heavy use back in the 90’s on big commercial heifer projects. This is a bigger outlined full-figured daughter of LT Bandwagon 3105. Bandwagon was a Right Time son that was marketed through Genex for several years. Over the course of my travels, I noticed a lot of Bandwagon daughters and so we used him. This cow really took to the Right Time side of the pedigree and she is the biggest cow in our herd. This cow will be found come sale day. She is a very moderate daughter of the ABS sire GDAR Traveler 9161 and out of our donor cow 9029. 9029 was a favorite of the visitors because of her very gentle disposition and extremely attractive phenotype. 9161 was a bull that seen very heavy use back in the 90’s on big commercial heifer projects. Later on people realized that these daughters would go well into their teens and be very productive cows. His semen was extremely hard to find and after several years of col-lecting it I had enough to use. This cow will no doubt be the hard-working range cow that will hang around for years. I would like to have had more daughters out of our FairVeiw Rito 2223 bull. They are ultra-feminine and fertile with tidy little udders. The Shea Emo daughter that 7285 came from was incredibly easy keeping and would guess that it came from the Shoshone Encore 1126 in her top line.
