OUR EXPERTISE Our Rail division has developed HiTRANS™ our patented transient dynamic MA Set test process and invested in rotor bar crack detection equipment. We are also the UK’s only traction motor repairer with the capability to rewind and vacuum pressure impregnate (VPI) both epoxy and silicone resins.

We believe that we are the only UK company with the capability of producing edge wound field and interpole coils for DC traction motors utilising our in-house coil manufacturing facility.

Utilising computer aided design, our High Voltage Coils division manufactures coils up to 15 kV and has the capability to manufacture diamond coils up to 6.4 metres (21 ft.) in length knuckle to knuckle, 3.04 metres (10 ft.) slot pressing capability and a coil span of 1.82 metres (6 ft.). We are experienced in the manufacturing of half bar systems which are used in the winding of turbo generator machines up to 70 MW.

A comprehensive range of automated shaping machines and electrically heated hydraulic presses ensures consistent quality providing both speed and accuracy with in-house testing facilities covering diagnostic, tan-delta, interturn, earth and impulse.

Our Electro Mechanical Services division has the latest facilities and equipment to provide a comprehensive range of services, both in-house and on-site including a 20 tonne crane to accommodate major projects.

Our world leading, fully cured, totally flexible insulation systemHiFLEX™ is a fully cured film / mica paper / film tape with unidirectional glass to enhance mechanical characteristics, bound with an acrylic resin.

Our B-stage end winding solutionHiRES™ is our insulation system that comprises a hot-pressed B-Stage Epoxy cell scarfed into a calcined mica and B-Stage end winding.

Our unique insulation system combining the merits of Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) and resin rich technologyHiBRID™ is a fully testable and flexible system pre VPI, and a fully waterproof system post VPI. Our Rail Division pioneers technical and commercial innovation in the repair, maintenance and life extension of AC & DC traction motors and MA Sets into the UK and global rail markets. We have serviced and repaired over 3,000 individual traction motors ranging from G310s, EE507s, MA Sets, high speed train motors, both Brush and GEC type, in addition to a broad range of other AC traction motors.

Products and services include: • AC and DC traction motor repairs • The only insulation system in the world developed and marketed specifically into the traction motor market by a traction motor repair company • Our patented transient dynamic MA Set test process that electrically simulates full load conditions on any type of MA Set, replicating exactly what happens in service • Auxiliary equipment, heavy repairs • Consultancy services; engineering and technical support, development projects, site visits and audits.

Through our commitment to total quality we plan to continue to lead the UK’s traction motor repair market in terms of innovation and customer service through investment in plant, equipment and people. In 2012 we invested in new facilities and plant including a silicone VPI plant to complement our epoxy capability, along with TIG welding and undercutting equipment enabling us to provide the comprehensive range of operations required for a high quality armature rewind. This has resulted in a 100% increase in both traction motor and MA Set capacity.

We offer the broadest scope of services for AC traction motors. Our cradle to grave OEM manufacturing and life cycle management service produces the entire range of original

motors to the train OEM’s specification, under licence if required, with options to provide life-cycle or in-warranty service and maintenance. Houghton International are specialists in rewinding and overhauling AC traction motors. Our pioneering HiTRAX™ life extending insulation system was originally designed as an AC solution, and subsequently transferred to DC motors.

We are the UK’s only traction motor repairer with the capability to rewind and vacuum pressure impregnate (VPI) both epoxy and silicone resins. This is complimented by in-house coil manufacturing, rotor bar production and induction braizing technology.

Our aftermarket service is focused on train operators, owners, bogey overhaulers and OEM’s requiring scheduled maintenance, casualty support and in-depot condition monitoring. We have worked on a wide variety of AC traction motors covering fleets across the UK, Scandinavia and Asia. Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation specify our HiTRAX™ system for their AEG AC traction motor rewinds.

Our research and development division works closely with organisations planning to either solve a minor problem, through to exploiting our expertise and academic links to develop new intellectual property rights for commercial exploitation. We have worked with Porterbrook in the UK as life extension consultants for their 458 fleet Juniper AC traction motors in conjunction with Newcastle University.We work with all the mainline Roscos in the UK as well as rolling stock OEM’s on a project basis, delivering quantified improvements.

All this complements our contracted volume, service, maintenance and manufacturing provision.

We have committed to significant investment to ensure our workshop has the latest facilities and equipment to provide a comprehensive range of services, both in-house and on-site. This is highlighted by the installation of a 20 tonne crane allowing us to accommodate major projects.

We minimise customer downtime by operating a 24hr, 7 days a week emergency repair service that is operational 365 days a year. We understand time is money for our customers and we work alongside them to solve their problems, efficiently and effectively.

Our staff are multi-skilled engineers with extensive experience who can carry out mechanical and electrical repairs on a broad range of equipment including AC and DC motors, pumps, gearboxes and generators, both in-house and on our customer’s premises.
