‘Mobile’ means portable and personal. eg mobile phone.
What are the new mobile technologies, and why are they relevant to learning ?
• PDAS, Mobile phones, wireless laptops, ebeams,
• Webinars, GPS, RFID’s etc.
Many of these tools exist within connected spaces and now have the ability to integrate with social software applications such as blogs and wikis and web2.0 services eg. Podcasts and vodcasts, that can be syndicated to personal spaces .

What is Mobile Learning?
Mlearning can be broadly categorised as:/ Personal vs Shared and Portable vs Static/ Eg: Moblogging, blogs and wikis/folksonomies (flikr)/ Syndicating with RSS feeds and itunes
In this session we will do a simple moblogging Task!/ This is a great chance for everyone to have a go at moblogging! Moblogging
/ Participants will send or moblog image files and audio files to the SI blog site
/ Get your mobile phone, PDA or digital camera ready!

/ New practices against existing theories and see how many examples of mobile technology you could apply in each of these theories
/ How are learning theories impacted when knowledge is no longer acquired in the linear manner?
/ What adjustments need to be made with today’s learning theories when technologies performs many of the cognitive operations previously performed by learners (information storage and retrieval)?
/ How can we as educators continue to stay current in a rapidly evolving information ecology?
/ Development of ePortfolios and mLearning Strategies in Vocational Education/ The use of Web 2.0 services to produce evidence-based assessment for
continuing formal and informal learning in the workplace

There has been small pockets of innovation across TAFE state-wide and nationally where mobile technology delivery has been implemented in VET.
However, for these implementations to be successful educators must be AWARE of some of these following issues:
1. Context – contextual info used and re-mashed content in the read, write, web scenario can conflict with anonymity and privacy
2. Mobility – the linking outside of the class to activities could lend to irrelevance to the course learning outcomes as a form of ‘escapee’
3. Learning over time – Industry based-learning needs good retrieval of learning experiences that are sustainable and scaleable over time eg effective tools for recording e-portfolios
4. Informality – students abandon technology if it is perceived as an intrusion into their social networks eg personal spaces/SMS etc
5. Ownership – Student-centred learning is about personalised learning however, students want to control their personal technology which challenges them when they bring into the classroom eg Consider costs, usability, technical and institutional support

Sharing Educational Content Using Mobile Devices/ Mobile Devices such as mobile
phones, PDAs, Ipods, Nintendo DS and other handheld devices can be used to deliver and share educational content.
/ Many video and audio formats are standard, and can be shared across all these devices, as well as being published on the internet – eg MP3 for audio and Mpeg4 for Video.
/ Content such as images and video with simple text captions can be effectively used in workplace and trades delivery as they offer more flexible and portable ways to view eLearning resources.

Example: Mobile Learning in TradesMetal:ED Project – TAFENSW – Illawarra Institute
The Metal:ED project was focussed on empowering teachers of Metal Fabrication and Welding to produce their own Video based resources which could be delivered to learners, online, via CD-rom or via Mobile Devices such as Mobile Phones and PDAs.

Metal:ED Project – Mobile Delivery of Learning Resources for TradesStaff in the Metal Fab section worked with technology staff to create video learning resources of core welding procedures. These were converted to appropriate formats for delivery to a range of mobile devices.

Moblogging is taking pictures and videos with your camera phone or PDA and publishing them on the internet using MMS messaging or mobile email services.
Moblogging in Education
There are a number of great Moblogging Services including Moblog.co.uk which allow teachers and students to share images, text and audio using simple mobile devices or the internet.
Many moblogging services are free, although the cost of sending text msgs must be considered.
We will be using Moblog.co.uk in our Practical Activity which is coming up!

Example: Moblogging in Tourism and Hospitality
Mobile Phones and PDAs have been used successfully at Illawarra Institute by teachers and students in Tourism and Hospitality courses.
The students and teachers used a Moblog.co.uk site to post images and text to the internet.

classes.
These images where then used in theory
classes for reflection and discussion.

/ engaging students in using mobile technologies as part of their learning
/ assisting teachers to develop mobile learning strategies
/ providing an online space for recording learning and reflecting on learning outcomes
/ providing opportunities for students across a number of learner groups to socially network and share their learning
/ exploring the use of free and low-cost mobile learning strategies for use in teaching and learning.

/ Blogs and Wikis – Embed Your Mobile Content on your blog or wiki. Staff and Students are able to use the Sydney Institute Wikispaces and Blogs to create these ‘mashups’.

L&I will be looking for teaching sections who wish to explore mobile technologies and web 2.0 tools in 2008
Possibilities to consider in your teaching section:
– Providing student support tools and resources in a simple, easy to use format
– New ways of delivering our courses in a cost effective and timely manner that offers more flexibility to teachers and learners
– Assist disengaged students to become part of a learning community thus increasing retention and completion rates

As mobile technology becomes more ubiquitous (for the ULearner) and interoperable with networks applications ( organisation’s intranets and internets) with enhanced capabilities for rich social interactions using Web 2.0 type services ( .3.0, 4.0 by 2015) it will become more and more embedded as a flexible learning option to students studying in VET.
These technologies will assist work-based learning environments as we will move more and more outside the classroom and ’in the field’ where industry base learning will be both real and virtual.
Thus, becoming more situated personal, collaborative, connected and lifelong.
