We currently employ apprentices in the following trades:

HISTORY OF MASTER BUILDERS SAMaster Builders SA’s Group Training Scheme is a division of the Master Builders Association of SA Inc. As a not-for-profit organisation we are here to represent the building and construction industry and all of its stakeholders. Our Group Training division aims to offer employers the highest quality apprentices with the best possible working arrangements to help young South Australians start their career in building.

We strive to provide the best service to both our host employers and apprentices and consider the needs of both parties to ensure a positive and long-lasting partnership.

Master Builders SA has been running apprenticeship programs for almost 40 years and is one of the largest employers of building and construction apprentices in South Australia.

WHAT IS GROUP TRAINING?Group Training is a flexible and effective alternative to direct employment.

Group Training Organisations such as Master Builders SA recruit and employ apprentices and place them with hosts throughout their apprenticeship to undertake on the job training.

Master Builders SA take out all of the hassle associated with taking on an apprentice, including payroll, superannuation and WorkCover, as well as organising all of the apprentices trade school training.

WHY MASTER BUILDERS SA APPRENTICESLOW RISK

Master Builders SA provides a low risk alternative to direct employment allowing you as the host employer to return or swap the apprentice at any time with minimal notice.

All Master Builders SA apprentices have completed a pre-employment screening and induction process that involves:

• Interview and selection process• Full medical test• Drug and alcohol test• Language, literacy and numeracy testing• Induction program which includes White Card

CASH FLOW

Master Builders SA’s Apprenticeship Program is an easy option and allows small business to manage their cash flow and costs by:

• Applying government and CITB incentives to our charge out rates upfront• NOT charging hosts for sick leave, public holidays, RDOs, inclement weather etc• Paying for all Trade School fee and their wages while at Trade School

• Paying all superannuation and WorkCover obligations

• Saving you payroll tax for payrolls over $600,000

• Managing all WorkCover claims and management of Return To Work

WHY MASTER BUILDERS SA APPRENTICES?FLEXIBILITY

Master Builders SA allows for flexible hosting arrangements with short term placements starting from just 1 week up to long-term placements (full term of the apprenticeship).

Apprentices can be returned to Master Builders SA during downtime and if they don’t fit you can return and request a replacement.

Master Builders SA also has a variety of apprentices available from junior to mature age and in different years of their apprenticeship. (i.e you can request a 2nd or 3rd year)

MINIMAL ADMINISTRATION

Master Builders SA removes your administrative burden by taking care of all the paperwork, registrations, maintenance and legal requirements associated with an apprentice, including:

• Complete all paperwork associated with the Contract of Training• Registration with CITB and Consumer and Business Service

• Establishing and maintaining a training plan

• Enrolment and management of Trade School

• Wages

• Superannuation

• Safety induction and checks

• Annual leave and leave loading

• Other leave entitlements, including sick leave.

OFF THE JOB TRAININGAll apprentices are required by law to attend Trade School during their apprenticeship. Master Builders SA works with the apprentice and host employer when arranging Trade School, with the majority of our apprentices attending Adelaide Training and Employment Centre (ATEC).

Master Builders SA pays all fees associated with Trade School, undertake all of the organising, monitoring and administrative requirements of Trade School as well as pay the wages of the apprentices while they are at Trade School.

If an apprentice is not on site working you DO NOT pay!

As an added bonus all our apprentices are members of Master Builders SA and have access to reduced member rates on all of our training courses.

Master Builders SA wants to provide the best apprentices in the industry and for this reason we ensure our apprentice compete training in:• White Card - half day session tailored to building and construction• Manual handling• Safely working at heights• Scaffolding• Asbestos awareness• Hazard ID • WHS hierarchy of control• Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)

CREAM OF THE CROP!SELECTION

Master Builders SA has a rigorous selection and recruitment process that has a number of stages and steps involved before an apprentice is employed. Candidates must submit a resume and cover letter and undertake an analytical and critical thinking test. Those shortlisted are interviewed by a panel of experienced and qualified professionals.

At the final stage potential apprentices must pass a pre-employment screening and induction process that involves:

• Medical test (Hearing, mental, respiratory, muscular and skeletal and skin check)• Drug and alcohol test• Language, literacy and numeracy testing• Problem solving scenarios• Induction program - White Card

From this selection process we are able to supply you with an apprentice that is physically fit for the job, has the right attitude, enthusiasm, work ethic and emotional maturity to be a valuable addition to your business. They will also have an understanding of the basic principles and communication skills required for their apprenticeship.

CANDIDATES

Master Builders SA’s has close relationships with VET bodies and Registered Training Organisations across South Australia and identifies the best candidates from various sources including:

• ATEC Pre-Vocational programs• VET in Schools - Certificate I and II in Construction• Doorways 2 Construction (D2C)

MONITORING AND SUPPORTMaster Builders SA’s Field Coordinators are out on the road visiting apprentices and host employers 5 days a week. Our Field Coordinators are responsible for:

• Undertaking regular site visits

• Ongoing perfomance management of apprentices

• Assisting and guiding apprentices with performance issues both on the job training and at Trade School

• Ensuring that the apprentice and host employer are “good fit”

• Monitoring apprentices on their safety check and making sure WHS guidelines are met, therefore assisting the host employer improve WHS compliance where necessary

• Managing relationships with host employers to understands the needs of the host employer and when an apprentice is required on site and when the apprentice needs to be returned to Master Builders SA.

OUR APPRENTICES COME WELL EQUIPPEDMaster Builders SA understands our apprentices are new to the industry and we ensure they have the right clothing and tools before they head on site. All our apprentices are provided with:

Full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - safety hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, dust mask, pants, hi vis jumper, top and vest, and wide brimmed hat.

Apprentices are also supplied with a tool box valued at $1,000 that has all of the tools they would require on site so they arrive ready and prepared to work.

RECRUITMENT

CAREER Master Builders SA encourages all apprentices to continually develop and strive to be the best they can during their apprenticeship and after.

Master Builders SA has almost a 90% completion rate with our apprentices and over 95% end up being employed by their host.

Each month Master Builders SA awards an Apprentice of the Month (AoM) and a Host of the Month (HoM). This is promoted online, in SA Builder Magazine and at our annual Building Excellence Awards in August one of these apprentices is named Apprentice of the Year.

We believe it is important to acknowledge outstanding performance and committment and reward apprentices and host employers for their good work.
