In COA-EuroSpine, five Chinese and overseas scholars including the vice president of EuroSpine2012 and the president of EuroSpine2013, Prof. Ferran Pellisé Urquiza and the permanent member of executive committee of EuroSpine, Marek Spalzski, will discuss on the topics of minimal invasive surgery of the lumbar spine, spondylolisthesis with lysis and arthrodesis or disc arthroplasty in the cervical spine.

In the domestic spine session, we are honored to invite Prof. Weinstein, the chief editor of the medical journal Spine, and Prof. Max Aebi, the founder and past president of EuroSpine, and the chief editor of European Spine Journal to give invited speeches. COA spine section will provide consecutive interpretation in order to optimize communication between chinese and foreign scholars, and further to provide the most directly exchange opportunities for Chinese surgical majors in spinal deformity to discuss most cared deformity disorders. In a two-day meeting of international spinal section, almost two dozen world-famous professors from international spine associations like the president of SRS, Prof. Kamal Ibrahim and the new president of AO-Spine, Pro. Jeffrey C. Wang will give recent research achievements in spine area.

COA traditional instruction course lecture on spine will be provided before domestic spine section meeting gets underway on Nov 16-18, and it ought to be a boon to all kinds of spine surgeons. On Domestic Spine Session 1, the spinal deformity, cervical spine degenerative disease, cervical intervertebral disc arthoplasty, cervical spine fracture, spinal cord injury and thoracolumbar fracture, etc. will be discussed. It also provides a platform for young orthopedic surgeons giving COA award papers presentation. On Domestic Spine Session 2, minimally invasive surgery, thoracic degenerative disease, spine tuberculosis, basic research, spine tumor, infection and osteopathy, etc. would be involved. COA2012 Congress will focus on a number of spinal disorders, which implies a rational and evidence-guided evolution of Chinese spine society. After each special topic for free paper presentations, the case-based dispute and case discussion would be presided over by the experts of this domain.

The spine session of COA2012 involved much more attendees at home and abroad with further discussion and communication would be definitely larger and more internationalized than ever. The goal of COA2012 is also consistent with the objective of COA planning to be the internationalized orthopaedic association and the first-class international platform for international and domestic orthopedic surgeons’ communication. As the president of COA and the chairman of Chinese Spine Society, I wish the congress a complete success and guests from all over the world will have a happy stay in Beijing, China.

More details on the COA website

How time flies! Today we gather together in Beijing again, taking part in the 14th annual Orthopedics academic conference as well as the 7th international COA academic conference. We are gathering here again since the annual conference last year to share new achievements in the area of fundamental scientific research in orthopedics. We are expecting a wonderful meeting.

The new COA-CORS was founded in Wuhan in July of 2012. This is the first meeting since the establishment of the new COA-CORS. Thanks to the efforts and hard work of several former leaders and fellow committee members, CORS has already begun to take shape. CORS has a strong academic influence, making it an important part of COA. With the support of the orthopedics branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the joint efforts of the new members of CORS, we are looking forward to strengthening the foundation of COA-CORS by working together, the

exchanging of information, and the sharing of achievements. We hope that CORS can play a more active role than before in the promotion of orthopedics fundamental research level as well as the promotion of clinical work and the development of orthopedics transformation medical science.

Recently, we note with pleasure that more and more orthopedists have realized the importance of fundamental research. Many orthopedists, especially young orthopedists, who have PhD degrees and studied overseas have good knowledge, keen thoughts, and strong abilities. We are proud of their abundant research achievements. CORS received more than 1450 research papers this year, 60 of which will be chosen to be discussed. These papers exhibit the experience of famous experts in orthopedics as well as the innovation of young and middle-aged orthopedists. We are looking forward to the speech of each representative. We hope to receive new insights into scientific thinking. Based on the principle of optimum selection, we are also awarding the “Zhao Yisu Orthopedics Fundamental Award”. We will see the highlights of research from some excellent hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Wuhan, Chengdu, Guangzhou, etc. Also, we will see the innovative achievements of the hospitals in Ningxia, Guizhou, etc.

What’s more, 40 thematic speeches will be given by some of the top experts in international orthopedic associations. We hope the Chinese orthopedists can maintain close contact with these experts, to internationalize Chinese orthopedics research.

We firmly believe that COA-CORS will be a success; we are standing at a new starting point with new hope and new results.

As an important branch of orthopedics, joint surgery has a high position. In recent years, the development of joint surgery is rapid. Most hospitals above level 2 in China are able to complete total hip arthroplasty (THA) independently, and get a good effect. Meanwhile, such joint replacement operations as shoulder, knee, elbow, and ankle are more and more common in high-level hospitals.

After the establishment of new Chinese Orthopedics Association, the re-election has been carried out for each study group. The new join group is facing many challenges and opportunities. As a new elected head of joint group, I have some assumptions and arrangements for the future work following:

1、On the base of Joint Group of Chinese Orthopedics Association, Chinese Hip Society (CHS) and Chinese Knee Society (CKS) should be established. This refining will be better for appointing specialists for the

reeducation of orthopedists, and compiling training outlines.2、Standard and admittance of joint replacement should be drafted in order to avoid medical

risks. Under the lead of national Ministry of health, admittance of joint replacement has been discussed repeatedly, and related contents are being drafted. The primary common views have been achieved that hospitals above level 2 are permitted to do simple THA, but only level-3 hospitals are allowed to do total knee arthroplasty (TKA) since TKA demands higher technology and skills. For other joints, since they are not common, we agreed that these operations should be done in level-3 hospitals. Organized by Military Medical Press and Joint Group of Chinese Orthopedics Association, we recorded 8 hip joint operations and 8 knee operations as examples, which are operated by 16 most famous specialists in China and will be showed and explained by the operators in COA 2012. This will surely promote the development of joint surgery.

3、National register system and workstation for joint replacement should be built. Sweden has built the first complete register system of the world since 1979. Register system is helpful for gaining complete epidemiology data of joint replacement, analyzing the reasons of failure, improving the skills of operator, promoting the development of artificial joint designing, and evaluating the effect of different artificial joints objectively. Many counties have built the register system for joint replacement. This could provide a large database which is helpful for operators and even the whole society. Therefore, we need a complete national/local register for joint replacement.Happily, our national joint replacement register system has been produced, and is now being tested. It only takes 10 min to input whole data of a patient. This system is simply operated, rationally designed, and expected to be put into use next year.

4、Continuing medical education. COA 2012 is held by joint group, which includes 75 lectures about joint surgery. Nearly all fields and development on joint surgery are included. We have started to produce the course on joint surgery, which is expected to be published in 2013. This will be a textbook on joint surgery, and is worth for all surgeons.

2012 Annual Meeting of Chinese Arthroscopy Society 2012 Annual Meeting of Chinese Orthopaedic Minimally Invasive Surgery SocietyArthroscopic surgery is witnessing a rapid and significant development

in recent decades in China. Knee and shoulder arthroscopy are by far the most common arthroscopic procedures performed. Chinese arthroscopic surgeons have been demonstrating enthusiastic interest and great passion in extensive studies from basic research to clinical practice in diverse fields. For 2012 COA congress, we have received nearly 600 abstracts from China and more than 20 abstracts from other countries for arthroscopy and sports medicine, more than half of which are on the knee, followed by the shoulder and elbow.

Knee arthroscopy is the first introduced and most developed arthroscopic technique in China. Current topics are focused on ACL and PCL reconstruction, meniscus repair and cartilage repair. Tunnel positioning and anatomical reconstruction are at the center of discussions and studies. Rehab is one of the most important, yet too often neglected,

fields of ACL reconstruction surgery. Rehab following ACL surgery focuses on restoring motion and strength, and improving the stability of the joint to prevent future injuries. Surgical pitfalls, revision surgery, postoperative complications, multiple ligaments reconstruction, and repair or reconstruction of posteromedial and posterolateral corners are also attracting more and more interest. The concept of preserving the meniscus as much as possible after injury is generally accepted by the surgeons. With development of meniscal implant and improvement of repair devices, meniscus repair can be performed now for a wider range of meniscus diseases and injuries. Articular cartilage repair is not new in China and techniques of microfracture, osteochondral transplantation and chondrocyte implantation have also been applied. Also, new cartilage scaffolds developed by our researchers have been used clinically.

Shoulder arthroscopy sees the most rapid development recent years, and is now widely applied in the treatment of intra-articular shoulder lesions including labrum tear, rotator cuff tear, shoulder instability, shoulder stiffness, as well as extra-articular lesions including acromioclavicular injuries, deltoid contracture, spinoglenoid cysts, and scapular injury, etc. in China. Massive rotator cuff tear and new techniques such as double row are gaining popularity. Elbow arthroscopy has also been applied to treat elbow osteoarthritis, synovitis, resistant tennis elbow, elbow stiffness, and intra-articular fracture, etc. Posterolateral rotary instability of elbow joint has been studied more deeply.

In China, hip arthroscopy is also developing rapidly corresponding to the advancement of diagnostic and treatment techniques, increased incidence and identification of hip injuries, and increased demands from patients. Femoroacetabular impingement, which was once reported to be with low incidence in China (largely due to limited diagnostic methods), is gaining increasing awareness and can be treated under arthroscopy.

Ankle arthroscopy has been applied for treatment of cartilage lesions, ankle loose bodies and synovitis, etc. Subtalar arthroscopy is also used by Chinese arthroscopic surgeons to treat subtalar injuries

In order to promote the improvement and development of minimally invasive surgery of orthopaedics in China, minimally invasive spine surgery association, one of the branches under the Chinese Medical Association, was established in 2003. The minimally invasive orthopedic meeting is annually held in COA. With the support of the association and the efforts of committee members, the minimally invasive orthopedic techniques have been burgeoning in the mainland of China.

In September of this year, Professor ZHOU Yue, the chairperson of the minimally invasive spine surgery association, gathered the four vice chairperson and some committee members to Chongqing and held the manuscript reviewing meeting for annual meeting of the association in COA. The schedule, invited speakers and article categories etc., of orthopedic meeting were reached and determined after a long discussion. The minimally invasive orthopedic meeting in COA 2012 will last for two and a half days. On behalf of the organizing committee, we invite several

well-known minimally invasive spinal experts all-around the world to give guest speeches, morning courses and lunchon symposium in COA. The meeting consists of 14 symposiums, including MISS for lumbar disc herniation, discogenic low back pain and lumbar stenosis, MIS fusion technique for lumbar degenerative disease, MIS technique for spinal tumor, tuberculosis and deformity, MIS technique for spinal trauma, MISS for cervical spine diseases, imaging and navigation techniques and MISS for limb and pelvic disorder.

The minimally invasive orthopedic meeting in COA 2012 represents a multidisciplinary field not only in clinical application in minimally invasive surgery techniques and treatment, but also in discussing the development and application in high techniques of digitalization intellectualization with abiding care interest on spine. I believe that the academic communication in COA play a vital role in the progress and development of minimally invasive orthopaedic techniques in China.
