Another great year at the Taste of Buffalo!

For more than 15 years, Beechwood Continuing Carehas proudly staffed the ticket tent at the annual Taste ofBuffalo – and this year was no exception! More thansixty Beechwood volunteers –consisting of staff, resident

family,- board members and friends – turned out to help during thetwo-day event.

The weather was sultry, the crowd was friendly (not to men-tion hungry!) and, all in all, it was a wonderful Western New Yorkweekend. Each year, as thanks for Beechwood’s assistance, the Tasteof Buffalo organizing committee makes a very generous donation to the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation.

“This is a great opportunity for Beechwood to participate in one of Buffalo’s largest and most popularannual events,” says Cheryl Wasson, Director of Development/Marketing.“Our volunteers look forward to itevery year – it’s a worthwhile event and, at the same time, benefits Beechwood.”

Diane and Ray Soto ready for the next ticket buyer!

occasion was celebrated with a birthday party in her honor in theBeechwood atrium. Her two children, along with her grandchildren andgreat grandchildren, were on hand to celebrate this milestone.

Miriam’s father, Charles “Cy” Rosen, was the superintendent of print-ing on the Roycroft campus, working for Elbert Hubbard, Sr., who hadfounded Roycroft in the late 1890’s. Miriam grew up in a house on theRoycroft campus, located on Main Street just across from the school sheattended. When Elbert Hubbard and his wife died aboard the Lusitania in1915, Miriam’s dad stayed on, working for Elbert Hubbard II.

Miriam also worked at Roycroft, first in the pamphlet bindery while sheattended college (she attended Syracuse University for two years and then transferred to Pitt, receiving her degreein business administration in 1930), and then in the business office as a secretary and bookkeeper. She has fondmemories of the Hubbard family, her childhood on the Roycroft campus and her career working for the Hubbardfamily.

She and her future husband, John Minsker, grew up across the street from each other; they married in 1930,shortly after Miriam graduated from college. The Minskers had three children: Betsy was born in 1937; John in1939 and Rick in 1942. Sadly, John passed away in 1998 and son Rick passed away in 2005.Today, Mrs. Minskerhas eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

The Minskers both served on the original board of directors for Beechwood Continuing Care. John servedfrom 1961-1980; he was chairman of the board from 1966-1968. A contractor by trade, he chaired the buildingcommittee for the Beechwood Homes (formerly Beechwood Residence & Nursing Homes).Miriam was a mem-ber of The Blocher Homes’ board of directors prior to the merger with Beechwood in 1977; she served on thejoint committee as well. They both continued to be active supporters and volunteers for many years.

What is Miriam Minsker’s secret to such a long and healthy life? “I never let anything stress me out!” she says, adding that she loves living at Beechwood because “I am well taken care of, my meals are made for me, my roomis kept clean and I have made many friends here.”
